Urban Meyer suspends Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde for at least the first three games of the season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has suspended senior running back Carlos Hyde for at least three games for his actions in an event at a Columbus nightclub last weekend.

Meyer announced his decision after Columbus police earlier Tuesday announced that no charges would be filed against Hyde. Meyer said that Hyde will also have to fulfill other obligations before he can return to the team.

That came after a police interview with the alleged victim on Saturday, when she told police she did not want to pursue the case. Hyde was originally suspended indefinitely last Monday while police continued to investigate and Hyde was named as a person of interest.

Contd.....

Let's try this again.

Baugh committed a very serious crime. Underage drinking and fraud (fake id) and he got one game. Hyde committed no crime and people want 3 games?

WTF???

(Better?) :)

Those are not "serious crimes". They are also not in violation of Coach Meyer's core values for the program.

What Hyde did IS in violation of one of the core values. That's the difference.

I think "at least" three games is more than fair. Honestly, it's the bare minimum that I expect for this situation.

It's a sham. Urban succumbed to media pressure to make a point. Would you like me to list the punishments his players have received in the past vs. the crimes they've committed? How about a similar list with Tressel in charge? I can't think of any other punishment to an OSU player when no crime was committed or drug test failed.

I don't think Meyer "succumbed to media pressure" in the least. He has never given evidence that he cares two [Mark May]s for the media, and I see nothing that indicates he's changed in that regard.

I'll accept this punishment as reasonable, and I think it was Urban Meyer's sole decision free of coercion. I don't expect anyone else to agree with either of those premises, though. I mean, fuck, I could say the sky is blue and a raft of other people would log on only to say that I have no clue what I'm talking about, it's green.

Coach Meyer acting consistently with his own core values is a sham? He had it put on the wall at the WHAC. He has stated publicly that treating women with respect is a no-compromise disciplinary situation. The media didn't put him up to this suspension, Carlos Hyde did when he swung at that female. I for one am glad that Coach Meyer seems to be taking a more principled stand on this kind of thing than he did in the past.

But it's not consistent with his or previous OSU coaches disciplinary actions of the past. A DUI, for example, is infinitely times worse than this silliness. Yet, Urban and Tressel have given DUI offenders a game or two at most. I also disagree with your assertion of Hyde violating any "core values." There was nothing "violent" about what Hyde did on that tape. He's being punished for embarassing the program at a time when Coach Meyer is under heavy scrutiny.

Coach Meyer is not (nor should he be) beholden to what Coach Tressel did where it concerns discipline.

Has Coach Meyer had to handle a DUI during his tenure at Ohio State? I don't recall one. How about we assess how he handles one if and when it takes place? I think he has demonstrated so far that he is handling discipline differently than he did at Florida. That would be a good thing in my mind - not just for the health of the football program but of the coach himself.

The core value does not refer directly to "violence"... treating women with respect is a broader idea than that. It means (to me at least) that swinging and missing is just as disrespectful as swinging and connecting. Besides, regardless of what you can or cannot see in the video one thing is crystal clear - he didn't make the correct decision to just brush it off and walk away.
