RB Carlos "El Guapo" Hyde (Official Thread)

Archie's attempts are waaaayy out in front. If Wells had more carries, who knows. Archie played every game and didnt miss much though. He also played in a completely different era.

Wells was surely a beast though. Best stiff arm I've ever seen along with Earl Campbell.
Good point, but as pointed out he still has the highest yards per carry as well. It was years before I was born, so maybe someone else can speak better to it, but I also think it speaks to just how good he was to get that number of carries on teams as loaded with talent as he was on.

Beanie was a beast though, no doubt about that.

Pittman was extremely underrated. Had he stuck around for his senior season he would have almost certainly been #2 in rushing yards all time at tOSU.....

Rushing Yards – Career Att......Av/Att..Gm...Av/Gm.....TD......Year
1. 5,589 Archie Griffin 924........6.0....46......121.5....26...1972-75
2. 3,768 Eddie George 683........5.5....48........78.5....44...1992-95
3. 3,553 Tim Spencer 644........5.5....47........75.6....36...1979-82
4. 3,382 Chris Wells 585..........5.8....36........93.9....30...2006-08
5. 3,200 Keith Byars 619..........5.2....37........86.5....46...1982-85
6. 3,076 Pepe Pearson 659.......4.7....49........62.8....32...1994-97

8. 2,951 Michael Wiley 509.......5.8....47........62.8....27...1996-99
9. 2,945 Antonio Pittman 557....5.3....35........84.1....22...2004-06
10. 2,649 Raymont Harris 574....4.6....43........61.6....27...1990-93

Oops. I always forget Pittman left early.
I don't think he would've moved that far up though -- he was already splitting gametime a bit with Beanie the year before, and I can't help think that was a factor in his decision. They probably would've got around 10-15 carries each per game. Well, maybe more remembering the QB situation that year.
Pepe Pearson is another great memory.

even if he only got 700 yards on the season that would have put him at 3rd all-time.

I'm not going to get in to the "best evaaaarrrr!111!!!111 argument. It is way, way too hard to call over almost 150 years. In a career, Archie stands alone. Period. I don't see anyone besting him any time soon. He is the template that all other backs will be judged by, and rightfully so. He was judged, twice, nationally, and consecutively, to be the best player in the game. He ran behind a really good line.

Eddie George. What James Thurber described Chic Harley as, was Eddie George for me. I didn't have that feeling again, and haven't since, except for MoC. He could have been the best ever. And I don't mean at tOSU. I mean ever.

We've had some great backs. (and i didn't even mention Keith Byers) better than we've deserved or been able to appreciate. Pittman deserves a nod here. Tough, straight up stud. Beanie was so talented, the best stiff arm, maybe ever, fast, elusive.....At the end of the day, probably the most physically gifted. There are many, many others that have contributed to the vast legacy of tOSU running backs. But, If had to pick a guy to go in to battle with, and i mean "to the death", it would be Los'. He runs like, not just his life depends on it, but everyone else's does too. I'd put Hyde In the Top 5. I dunno where because it's too hard to call, but he is one of the best backs to ever wear the scarlet and grey.

Right now, he is our horse, another horse in a very big stable of horses at tOSU. He's one, from the day he committed, that I've had high -- very high -- hopes for. It's been a LOT of fun to watch him develop. This year has been nothing but icing on the cake. Dude is a baller. He'll do well at the next level.

No one mentioning how good Carlos snow was, and he was a special one, Robert smith was a very good one as well. Not to mention the underrated but talented in their own rights of michael wiley, pepe pearson and antonio Pittman. The one year we had the pleasure of having Maurice Clarett was a great season as well, makes me shed a tear thinking about what his career could've been. But Carlos is just something special. A combination of a number of guys on that list, and his own magic. A blend of size, power, speed and elusiveness. Fits great in tressel's offense or urbans, would love to see him against the other top OOC defenses to see if Alabama or fsu could corale him.

More than Eddie ran for?! Try again.
Eddie ran for 1927 yds his senior year.

I can't wair for next season and the EZE IS THE BEST SINCE EDDIE talk.

Amen, Kyle. Also, Eddie had another 400ish yards receiving. And what? 26 Touchdowns? I don't remember.

And as cute as it is watching Carlos juke DB's in space, lets just say, Eddie could have done that, but, he chose not to, more often than not.

I love Carlos, I've enjoyed these last weeks enormously, but, his career here is what it is, and its not in the Pantheon of great OSU backs. A wonderful few weeks here... but, yeah.

On the flip side of it... Please, please, please lets not think that Pepe Pearson or Mike Wiley (and I liked Mike Wiley, if only we had him and not Lydell Ross in '03) were anything like as good as Hyde is.

I think the thing that will forever cement 'Los into Buckeye lore as one of the top 10 backs in OSU history is a memorable performance in The Game this year. I'd love to see him truck someone at the goal line or...Well mainly I want to see him truck someone at the goal line. My fondest memories of Buckeye football occur in the game. One of them is:

You're due, El Guapo.

He reminds me of an underated power back of the late 60;s former Buckeye and Green Bay Packer John Brockington.
I was on the phone with a buddy discussing Carlos & his placement among the greats.. I was reading the average yards/game stat line when I came across Brockington. As someone who spent their youth bathroom breaks with Jack Park's books on my lap, I was surprised I had never really heard a whole lot about him.. the name looked familiar, but never realized after being Otis'/Kerns lead blocker for two years he had a stellar senior season in 1970 as part of the super sophomore class + the last 22 game win streak.

I guess Archie's two heismans overshadowed Brockington's 1970 season, but before Archie, Brockington must have been one of the best backs to have come through Ohio State -- Harley/Cassady/Brockington -- before the mid 70's anyways.
