RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

I think Mo deserves to start the season at 2... if Brandon changes that due to performance that would be great too, but as of now I don't see it early.

I would however love to see brandon get some touches in early games (Which should happen as I'm thinking we'll be up enough in a game or two. If he can bust a couple to create a buzz, it could be very much like TG in Miami right now and last year that tOSU, where just his on the field presence attracts respect for his speed and frees up some people.

From the spring and fall reports I've heard it doesn't sound like Mo has lost any position, but the season will tell, who knows what could happen.

Just to make myself clear, I'm excited to see what Saine can do, but I'm not about to demote a true Buckeye and a hard worker because this guy has potential.
Agreed, Yertle. Tressel clearly will, based on dominance in practice, bump an un-game-tested freshman ahead of a more established player. Look for most relevant example to Maurice Clarett vs, Lydell Ross in '02. It follows, then, that Saine, good as he may be, has not yet established a dominant position over Mo Wells in practice.

If Brandon were getting more touches as a returner I might tend to think Mo had things pretty well in hand as the #2. The fact that Mo is returning kicks makes me think Tressel has some other ideas. I am very happy with the improvements Mo Wells has made and his spring performance was very inspiring, but...., having said that I've seen Brandon Saine in person as well and he's explosive if I can use only one word. He's put on some weight so we still have to see if he can handle the Big10 workload. I'm guessing that after Beanie gets his 150 against Y'town that we'll see alot of Mo Wells and Brandon Saine, possibly on the field together. Lets start making some comparisons after that happens.

I don't follow. Holmes, Ginn & Gonzo were all starters and returners. How does being a returner loosen his hold on the #2 RB spot?

They weren't taking the pounding that running backs take either. If Mo Wells is solidly the #2 RB I wouldn't like him to get taken out on a return, when we are thin on experience at the RB position.

Mo Hall was a solid number two his junior and senior year, along with having two bad knees. I don't think that there is anything more going on with Brandon not getting KO return touches other than him being a freshman. Ginn didn't return kicks his freshman year either. Mainly because they were trying to teach him how to be a college receiver. Brandon, most likely, is not returning kicks, because the coaches are trying to teach him to be a college back. Once he gets that down, then maybe they'll try him out more on returns.

Saine ready to step it up
Speedy freshman from Piqua High School expected to be part of the Buckeyes' tailback rotation this season.

COLUMBUS ? Most Ohio State players will be basking in the adulation of 105,000 fans when they run onto the field today, but running back Brandon Saine will be looking for a way to blend into the background.

The bashful freshman won the Ohio Mr. Football award after leading Piqua to a state title last year, but he just hopes he can cover the distance from the locker room to the sideline without falling on his face.

"I'm kind of nervous about it right now," Saine said this week. "I run out for a game in Piqua, and there might be 10,000 people there. This will be 10 times what would be at a game in Piqua. Plus, I realize I'll be playing in front of those people. I think, 'Don't mess up. Don't look silly.' "

Saine ready to step it up

Saine hasn't had a carry yet in his career and the majority of Mo Wells' carries have been during clock-killing mode, and yet you have no doubt that Saine will beat out Mo Wells, despite Wells' experience and seniority...

After watching him play in the High school playoffs and after today's explosion, I think he's right Mili.
The kid is special.

bingo then again I was so pissed off at the calls when chris wells was suppose to run. It really pissed me off:!

I was thrilled with those calls. I think that Tressel was rightly trying to force the O-line to work out their kinks, get low, and learn to work as a team and play well. There were some problems on the line and he wanted them to try to fix them today as much as possible. I thought that that was a good plan. . .

He was essentially daring them, repeatedly, to get it right. He said, "you are bigger, better, and stronger than these guys. If you execute correctly, no matter how they play, this will work. Try again."

After today, I'd say that Brandon is indeed the #2 RB. Still, it was premature speculation before today...
