RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

Yeah I know what everyone here is talking about... I don't know, I just get the sense that unless Saine is moving forward (and forward only) he's going to have problems at running back. I hope he proves me wrong, but he strikes me as a person that has all the tools to be a great running back but the way his agility is he reminds me of a linebacker. Hopefully the coaches either A) realize this and make him run dives/sweeps or B) Work with him on his agility so that he can run drawls, used as a reciever, and also run off tackle.

I'm optimistic he can help us at PR/KR, but I'm also very skeptical at the same time of his running back abilities. Again hope he proves me wrong but his stiffness kind of worries me..

JimOtis has a point. I think Saine's power is/will be surprising. At 215 now, he could easily be 230 or so with a good lifting program, and if he keeps that speed, watch out.

Bo jackson clone with chris wells. RUN,RUN,RUN ALL DAY LONG.
I really think the buckeyes have what it takes to win it all this year with the running game and with that young deep defense .We have a great
o-line,wr's and a pick of QB'S.

gonzo and ginn gone but, we have some nice replacements. No one was crying about santonio holmes being gone last season and I see the same happening these season.

Every RB has an unique style. Brandon Saine isn't Reggie Bush, he's not Adrian Peterson, he's not Jim Brown, OJ Simpson or Tyronne Moss. He is Brandon Saine who has yet to prove himself as a college RB. So before we say he's too stiff or not the style RB we need, let's see what he can do at the next level and hope that his speed, unique style and physical ability will define him as another standout worthy of comparison. I am pretty sure Woody would have liked him.

lol ok I guess I asked for it there... Well ok he runs kind of straight up that better guys haha.. Anyways I know he's unique in his own way but if he's running straight up and down against high school kids he'll run that way (at first) against college kids, but I think a year with the staff will help him.

P.s. I want Brandon Saine to move whatever direction gets him into the endzone!! He can go north, south, east, west, backwards, diagnole, or hell I won't even care if he hop scotches his ass past the goal line just so long as he gets there!

I agree with you bukIpower, whatever way gets his butt in the enzone works for me. Then we can compare that unique style to the next RB who comes along. You can't coach him on how to run faster but you can coach him on the way he runs (with a football in his hands). Example, there's a HS RB here that never played football before his senior year but ran track very well (second to Saine in the 100 m last year). Anyway he ran for close to 400 yards in his first CL game this past season. My point being, this local RB's coach taught him a few plays and with his speed he blew past everyone on the field. Saine has many years of very successful HS football and has superbly proved himself at that level. Saine will need to do the same, but now at the college level he'll need to learn a few new tricks. I see him as a very productive RB in a season or two.

BTW: That local RB is Aeric Clay (committed to Eastern Michigan) and his coach (Garber) was Dane Sanzenbacher's Offensive coach in 2005, the year Toledo Central Catholic won the state.

hmmm... interesting point UTgrad and I totally agree with ya. I think whatever he did in High school won't fly in college, and I also think it'll take him 1/2 years to get things figured out. However, I'd kinda like to see him figure things out in 25 days of camp! I think we'll all have a false sense of hope for Brandon though after he rips off a 65-90 yard run against YSU in week 1!

I wouldnt worry about his running style too much. It's not like he is still standing tall when taking contact, just when he's switching gears and leaving people in his wake. Adrian Peterson. Eric Dickerson. Same type of running style for Brandon. In fact I see alot of Adrian Peterson in his style, which everyone knows worked out pretty well for Oklahoma.

As far as his agility goes, I'm not worried. If he has to juke guys out to get to the hole, ala Lydell Ross, we're in big trouble. What you have to keep in mind is just how fast he gets to the second level of the defense when he gets a crack. He's then making moves on LB'ers and running over DB's. He can also move a pile with his strength. Most of the time when you see runners with Brandon's type of speed they are much more timid or the "scatback" type. Definitely not the case with Brandon Saine.

A false sense of hope or things to come?

Very true... For sure he'll probably roll against half the teams we play this year so 500 yards is not out of the question at all. Ok Fine, Screw it, Saine for Heisman!! Here's hoping to Brandon making me regret ever thinking he might have problems in college!
