RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

You have to admit. That is one hell of a decoy though. :wink2:
Uhh its one hell of a waste..

the staff has been studying the saints offense.. great 1 - 2 punch of Chris Wells & MoWells/Saine

As a reciever, I can see the staff using him as a slot guy every now and again but no way do they move him from tailback to flanker

InSaine Speed

Brandon Saine, how do we use him best? What a good problem to have. A RB that with break away speed and a pass catcher that rivals Ginn with his speed. The only negative might be his inability to make quick cuts, hopefully this is something the coaches will be working on. I think he may be so fast and powerful that he doesn't need to make quick changes in direction.

B. Saine will be the HB version of Ted Ginn, except Half Back will be his home position let defenses see his speed then use him as a decoy, like Ginn in his first year.
He won't be a decoy until he does something big. Wisconsin didn't know to punt away from freshman Ginn until it was too late.

He'll be a mismatch waiting to happen when he goes into motion and splits out wide. He'd BETTER be covered by a DB, because if he's covered by a LB, it's a bomb for 6. We can use him as a decoy after he does that a couple times

I'd be really surprised if Saine wasn't the backup RB by the end of fall camp...
i'll be really surprised if he breaks camp anywhere better than 3rd string. no way will he unseat Beanie, and with the great spring that Marley had, i just don't see him passing Mo Wells either...

I like Saine and his speed but don't be surprised if Boom Herron is the running back who really makes us turn our heads. When I watch Saine his speed is unquestionable but I'm not on his band wagon until I see him be more ellusive and see how his vision translates to college ball.

I agree though that if he does pan out that his speed, power, and versitality would be very tough to match up with. Kind of like Reggie Bush with USC and how he was just far too quick for a LB.

Is it me or does Saine really seem very stiff when he runs (from his High School videos), when I watch Herron I just sense he has a better feel and has better sense when to cut and weave through people.

Saine does have somewhat stiff hips, which is why the Bush/Ginn comparisons are a bit off.

Even if Mo Wells continues to improve, I could see Saine as the 2nd option to power it between the tackles. MoWells has improved his strength, but on obvious running downs... I might opt for Brandon's size & speed.

I don't really understand why, or if it can be fixed, but Saine doesn't cut like most people. Most running backs, or WR's for that matter, plant off of one foot and still maintain most of their speed. If you watch Saine's video, it takes him three our four steps to change direction. And when he wants to make a sudden cut, he has to plant both his feet, which causes him to lose all of his momentum.

In high school, he can get away with it because he can simply outrun people to the edge or run over them to get a few yards, but there's no way he's going to make a linebacker or safety miss in the open field with his current running style. Herron is just the opposite, because his cuts are extremely economic. He will make cuts that give enough distance from defenders, but don't cause him to lose any speed. His running style will easily translate to the college level.

i get the same feeling. saine and small finished 1 and 2 in a meet with saine being faster but on the field with a ball in hand from what i have seen so far i would say small is faster but thats just my inference. either way i hope saine hits it big at some point and time whether it be this year or in the upcoming future.

Small is very explosive, and can run circles around Saine in terms of agility... but I'm not sure Small has the 6th gear on KR's that Saine has.

could be but i just think small has it. even though small didn't do much in the spring game, he looked very fast on the field. i remember seeing saine in his one vid where he was on the kick team and he ran the guy down and it looked like he had world class speed but he just doesn't seem THAT fast when he is running with the ball. i watched him play vs troy last year too and had the same impression but hopefully he proves me wrong not to mention small is older.

Saw the state championship game and Saine going straight looked "world class" fast, albeit against HSers. However that speed did not seem quite as apparent when he was making moves and cutting (not completely sold on his vision). Still if he gets a seem, watch out. I think with some more coaching he'll maximize his abilities and the staff will find the best fit for him. I loved watching opponents chasing Teddy and watching them have to cut it up after taking the wrong angle of pursuit. It will just be fun to watch someone with Brandons potential grow as a Buckeye.
