RB Antonio Pittman (Official Thread)

Greatest is determined by comparing one to his peers and predecessors. By any standard, Pittman is not a great Ohio State tailback, nor is he a great tailback compared to the other tailbacks playing college football today (Adrian Peterson, Laurence Maroney, Reggie Bush, etc). He might be a great back someday, but he isn't now.

I agree with this statement. I think Pittman has shown that he has it in him, but great backs do it for a full season......or two. I won't call him great until then..

sg77 the difference here is im guessing your a young kid, you compare backs to ross, hall, claretty, wells, westbrook. the older people compare backs to george, harris, smith, while some are old enough to compare all backs to guys like byars, griffin, otis, johnson, vic, hop, les, etc.

I remember george, harris, and smith very well and Pittman has potential, but he is not going to be as good as any of those three. Unfortunately I was not alive to see the others. Hopefully we get the running game back up to par here in a year or 2 cause I'm tired of struggling with it

I don't think Pitman is a super-star, but he doesn't have a Pace,Lachey, Ward, Hicks or Parker either. If and when OSU has a legitimate AA lineman the running game will improve. Mangold is good but I don't know if he's first team in the Big 10.

Is it just me or does he ALWAYS look tired?

Maybe its the way he carries himself after the play, with his hands on his side, but maybe that's just his swagger?

Am I alone in this?

That was the trademark of the great Jim Brown. Every play he got up looking like he was dead. Then they gave him the ball again and he ran right over you.

I noticed that during the Iowa game. He had his hands on his hips quite often. I figured he was tired because he was running so much, but wondered how he could be so tired as it was still early in the game. I never even thought about the possibility of faking being tired.

my statement is in columbus a star running back hoists a trophy from the DAC in decemeber and is not all B10 player.

i think its relavant to make comparisons to other backs and if you dont compare how do you declare a star?
That's a pretty narrow view of a star running back. That would exclude #13, Robert Smith, Keith Byars and a bunch of other great backs. IMHO those standards are ridiculous, and not really subscribed to by most Buckeye fans. I would be willing to bet a poll would show that most fans would say Byars and Smith were star running backs at tOSU. Pittman is one of the better running backs (top 3-4) in the Big 10 so far this year, and he's a true Soph. What do you expect from him?
Does Pittman have the ability to be a star running back? Yes.
As was said earlier; probably not a superstar, but a star. When Eddie was a sophomore how many of you said he would win a Heisman before he left?
Pittman is running with a lot more confidence this year than last, and I don't see anyone taking his job this year or next, barring injury.
I think some of you will be surprised by Pittman over the next couple seasons.

It's a ploy to fake out the defense. So, he can get up and smash them in the mouth again. The kid has one mean straight arm!

His straight-arm is definitely one of his best abilities, though I think his vision is getting short shrift after some of the nice cutbacks he's run this year. I think ultimately production and success will be the yardsticks for measuring Pittman against earlier great backs, and if he leaves here with multiple 1000-yard seasons, 20+ starts and multiple Big10 titles, I'll remember him as a "great" OSU back.

i never said pittman was/wasnt a star or that he couldnt be.

IMO byars wins the heisman if he doesnt get hurt late in the season.
robert smith was an elite college back, and if you argue that look at what he did on sundays for the vikings.

maurice i cnat judge. was he a great player yes, when healthy and when he played.

on the eddie george issue anyone who saw him in the carrier dome his freshman year knew he was something special. he has some rough breaks, and sat behind some quality backs.

The thread asks if he has the ability to become one, not if he is one now. I assume you classify Eddie George as a great running back...George averaged 5.5 ypc in his career (683 rushes for 3,768 yards). Tim Spencer also averaged 5.5 ypc in his career (644 rushed for 3,553 yards). Keith Byers averaged "only" 5.2 ypc for his career (619 rushes for 3,200 yards). Pepe Pearson averaged only 4.7 ypc for his career (659 rushes for 3,121 yards). Those are our #2, #3, #4, and #5 runners of all-time, respectively, at Ohio State. If Pittman continues at his current pace (and that's assuming he doesn't improve with experience), he'll end up with around 3,700 yards (4,000 if he plays in bowl games this year and his following two years), with a 5.3 ypc average. That would put him near or at #2 all-time yardage-wise at Ohio State with a better career average than Keith Byers and Pepe Pearson. I'd say that would constitute being a "great" back.
