RB Antonio Pittman (Official Thread)

Sheesh, the guy gets 171 yards against Iowa and is averaging 5.3 ypc for his career (149-785), and yet many think he'll never be a "star" running back, has no vision, or can't break through holes. Have you seen him play? He breaks in inordinate amount of tackles for someone his size, find holes well (when they're there), and has good vision not only to the outside but through the hole, too. I tell you what, I'll take 5.3 ypc and 1111 yards for the season (that's his projection for this regular season based on his performance so far) anytime. I consider those "star" numbers...maybe not "superstar" numbers but "star" numbers nonetheless.

Agree Mili. The most impressive thing about Pittman's running thus far to me is how hard he runs. He never falls backward and more often than not is breaking tackles and running through defenders to fall forward for about 5 yards every carry. The only thing he doesn't have in my opinion is that Ted Ginn-Reggie Bush extra gear that gets him in the endzone once he breaks into the secondary, but hell those two guys are very rare and neither could take the pounding Pittman can.

Absolutely. I'll take this year's Pittman over Lydell Ross or Jonathan Wells any day. The guy has been busting his ass for us and he's a sophomore. I think we could all cut him some slack and appreciate what we've got instead of comparing him to George (who didn't come on as a superstar until his senior year) or Clarett (who may have been a once in a generation freshman, although I hope Chris Wells will be just as good).

Pittman is already a great halfback, go ahead and argue, I said GREAT. Hes averaged 5.3 yards a carry in his career, hes only a sophomore, and he will continue to improve every game every year.

Im so tired of everyone questioning Antonio Pittman, its complete bullshit.

Well, I guess that I had better change by opinion now that "The King" has spoken....

My biggest criticism of Pittman from his freshman season was that he would duck out of bounds on break-aways down the sideline rather than pick up the last few yards and take the hit. He hasn't done that this year, and he's gained a better explosion off the start of the run.

Maybe he knows he has to play well because he's got a stud coming for his job next year in Chris Wells.

sg77 the difference here is im guessing your a young kid, you compare backs to ross, hall, claretty, wells, westbrook. the older people compare backs to george, harris, smith, while some are old enough to compare all backs to guys like byars, griffin, otis, johnson, vic, hop, les, etc.

the expectations of a lot of people is that ohio state should have one of the two top backs in the big ten every year (including myself) not one of the better backs in the big ten. time will cool you down and temper your decision making.

No thats incorrect, the guy gets the job done, and thats all that matters. I dont care if hes blind, runs a 7.8 40 meters, and doesnt speak english, if he can consistently get me 4-5 yards a pop, thats all I care about, and Pittman is doing exactly that. This thread title says nothing about comparisons, it asks about his ability, and thats it.

Greatest is determined by comparing one to his peers and predecessors. By any standard, Pittman is not a great Ohio State tailback, nor is he a great tailback compared to the other tailbacks playing college football today (Adrian Peterson, Laurence Maroney, Reggie Bush, etc). He might be a great back someday, but he isn't now.
