RB Antonio Pittman (Official Thread)

Gwaltney has the potential to be a MoC without they psychotic mental issues. The kid is frickin' good. I would really like to land him. From everything I have seen and heard, Haw is better than Pittman. If we can land Gwaltney and/or Wells, I will be ecstatic for the next 4 years.

I've also heard that Haw has the physical capabilities but just isn't mentally there yet. I don't know if it's the offensive schemes that are holding him back or what but I can't wait until he gets to showcase his talents in the spring game.

I personally would love to see a power back. I don't think that small backs work well in our system at the moment due to lack of holes. Keep in mind that this may change because once we get an offensive line to open up holes, small backs will be able to hit the 2nd level very quickly. I think that is where Tressel is trying to go.

That being said, I think that we'll have a RB by committee early next season, then someone will emerge as the starter by mid season.

The problem with Pittman is that he's not an every down back. It's not neccesarily a problem, but it means that we need other backs to rotate in. Haw and Pittman will be a good 1-2 punch, but we'll definitely need other RBs too. What we need most is a goal-line RB that can punch it in when we have a 1st and goal at the 5.

We already have Dionte Johnson, and I think he'll do a damned fine job of punching it in

What makes you think that Pittman's "not an every down back"? If the OL is steady, he'll be good for 20+ carries a game easily.

As far as a goal line RB, if the OL would get some push off the line, we'd already have our goal line RB is Johnson. While our OL provided very good pass protection and some good run blocking against Michigan, they got manhandled on the two goal line stands. Even Clarett wouldn't have been able to run it in. Hopefully they'll continue their improvement under Peterson, and with this year's OL recruiting class, we may be able to get some good ol' fashioned drive blocking next season.

What we need most is a RB that is consistent and can average 4-5 yards a carry... that way, we'll get a 1st and goal from teh 5 every once in a while...

I think if Pitman can establish that he's durable enough to carry the rock 25 times, he's going to be hard to unseat... that said.. I'd like to see some Haw (and I'm sure we will) and it would be nice to know we have a solid Freshman or two...

RB Antonio Pittman (official thread)

According to recent Tressel comments, Pittman is at 210! Uh Oh! I hope the coaches run his ass off to lose some weight. Tress even wondered out loud if Pittman might be too heavy!

Yeah I read that.... the thing with Pittman tho is he has vision and doesn't juke right when he gets the ball like Ross did. I think he should play around 200-210 but I think he'd be most effective around 195-200. He'll lose the weight when football starts though trust me.

He'll shed at least 5 once he gets thru practices. 205 will suit him just fine. He has to go up against Texas and Iowa the first few games, I'd rather have him be a little more durable than quick. We've got plenty of speed elsewhere with depth behind it, RB is a little shallow to stay too small.

The other thing to keep in mind is that these guys usually lose 5-10 lbs between now and the end of the season. I suspect Pittman wanted to add some additional muscle for the wear and tear that he wasnt ready for last season. He will end up playing around 200-205 which is probably perfect for his build.

Lets not compare him to Ross who was 230 lbs two years ago. That did not make any sense to me, he might as well have played fullback.

jwinslow - Jinx, you owe me a coke [with Beam in it :wink2:].

Well reason I compared him to Ross was because Tressel brough up that Pittman might be too heavy and we all know Ross got too heavy. Haha I sure hope Pittman don't show up at 230 but its possible in a year or two with the strenght coaches and dietary plans they have now a days that he could end up at that weight. I think Pittman will be most effective at 200 though.

Another thing to consider is that the coaching staff realized that Ross did not have "it" and wanted him to be more of a power back than a balanced back. Just another possibility.

No coke for you.
