RB Antonio Pittman (Official Thread)

I like the idea of him putting on a little weight, so long as it's good weight (not fat). At 195, he looked a little to thin to me to be an every down back a year ago, and he's expected to have a heavier workload this year.

I'd like to see him at 200-205.

if he's 210, but has not lost a step or any quickness, why would this be a concern? or are we assuming that he lost a step because of the extra weight. either way, im with everyone that would like to see him wiht a little extra weight on him because of our short depth at RB.

weight is a concern for a scat back like AP

I just haven't seen many guys gain 15 to 20 pounds in 12 months and not lose a step. Pittman would be one of the exceptions to the rule if he indeed gained that much weight and didn't "lose a step"

....Tim Spencer was one of the fastest running backs ever at Ohio State when he was a 212 lb senior....but by the time he had played 3 years in the pros, he was up to 230

...Pepe Pearson, if I recall correctly, gained about 15 pounds before his senior season and didn't look the same way he did when he was smaller

...Lydell Ross....we all know what happened to LR when he bulked up too much

Great example in Spence. He was 6'1 210 at tOSU while Pittman is 5'11.

Didn't Spence move to FB at SD also?

haha no not at all taosman..... I doubt he was thinking out loud. WHen Tressel says something he straight up means it. Anyhow Tressel also said PIttman was outstanding in the spring so you have to look at it that way also....

Would not be an "issue", if not for JT's thinking out loud remark . If the head coach remarks about it, doesn't that say it all?
like bukI said... JT has never spoken a single word to the press without being two steps ahead with preparation and knowing what he wants to say.

It's possible Pittman is at 210 and the staff wants him at 206, so he gives him a public encouragement to slim down. Or perhaps he's 210 with a little too much body fat, and Tressel wants to spur him on to become 210 with less body fat.

Who knows. The point is that Tressel clearly is quite pleased with Pittman this spring, and I'm sure that a couple of players on OSU's team have a couple extra pounds that they will shed once practice begins.

Yep. This is from the official site.

Tim Spencer (1979-82, Football) - Three-year starter at running back ... Rushed for 3,553 yards and 37 touchdowns ... Still ranks third on all-time OSU rushing list ... Also third in rushing touchdowns (36) and career carries (644) ... Led Big Ten in all purpose running, 1982 ... MVP in the 1982 Holiday Bowl ... Second-team All America pick by the Associated Press ... Second player taken in the inaugural USFL draft of 1983 ... Played a year with Chicago, Arizona, and Memphis before moving to the San Diego Chargers, where he started at fullback for four years ...

Adding 15 pounds in 12 months for someone his age shouldn't affect his speed much, if at all, and I suspect everyone who said he'll lose a few pounds during fall practice is correct. Unless he went on a doughnut and beer bender all summer I don't think we should worry about it.

we'll see if he can handle the extra weight- i just dont want the 'lydell ross' syndrome where he beefs up too much and really loses speed/agility. however, that extra weight might let him take a few more hits during the long b10 season, since none of our rb's are really heavy hitters.

Lets not jump to conclusions before we see how he performs with the extra pounds. It may benefit him, every player is different, and he is not Lydell Ross. It's not necessarily fair to associate him with the Ross situation when he put on weight, it may actually benefit OSU.
