Bernie's name was being floated around this morning on ESPN.
Well at least if he's coaching it will keep him out of the broadcast booth, which would be doing us all a favor. I heard him do some commentary on one of the Browns pre-season games and he was absolutely awful. It sounded like they just grabbed some yahoo from the stands and gave him a microphone.

UM chooses Shannon as head football coach

The University of Miami has a new head football coach.
UM defensive coordinator Randy Shannon accepted the position Thursday, according to a well-placed university source.
An announcement by UM is scheduled for Friday.
Shannon, 40, a Miami native, becomes only the sixth black head coach in Division I football. He replaces Larry Coker, who was fired last month after six seasons.
Shannon graduated from Norland High and then UM in 1989. He was a member of the 1987 Hurricanes national championship team and an 11th-round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. Shannon was a Miami Dolphins defensive assistant in 1998 and 1999 before becoming Miami's linebackers coach in 2000.
He returned to UM in 2001 as defensive coordinator, and became the first UM coach to win the Frank Broyles Award that year as the top assistant in college football. Shannon's defenses have been outstanding every season, including this one, in which UM (6-6) is ranked fifth in total defense, fourth in rushing defense and 12th in scoring defense. Shannon's son, Xavier Shannon, is an offensive lineman for Florida International University.
After practice Thursday, UM job candidate Mike Leach, head coach at Texas Tech, declined to speak with the media.

What a bunch of idiots!

How do you expect to fix a broken program by hiring from within? That makes no sense to me at all! They deserve everything they get. This was their chance to send a message that their program was going in the wrong direction and they weren't going to sit by and watch it happen any more. Instead they hire a Miami coach with less HC experience as the one before him. What are they hoping to accomplish?

that's not really the point. they need to makeover the image of the whole program. it's like when a company is struggling. you dont fire the CEO then hire the CFO. they are too much alike. yes, miami's defense is good and i think they will be even better now but this does nothing to help their 'thug u' image.

Some of my favorites so far...

nothing like having the leading candidate being a guy who ran half the team for one of the most inept canes teams of the last two decades... new blood was needed, and looks like we are going to settle on a guy who was part of 6-6....great, i never thought i'd see the day that the rutgers head coach turns down the U...if we do hire shannon, i hope for the best, but i was really looking for something new, as someone who spends hundreds of dollars to watch the team live, it sucked seeing one of the most miserable offense's, and now we probably will hire a defensive minded HC??
ohwell.gif

Anyone on this board care to explain what so many of you have been saying, that UM is a great job and any coach would kill to be here????? First UNC, then South Carolina and then Rutgers now Alabama.....wow!!!!

The word must be out in the coaching ranks.....stay away from UM. Oh, that's right..."WE never offered those guys anything," or "Good riddins, we didn't want him anyway." This board is insane...first it was Schiano then Spurrier and then Leach...neither wanted anything to do with us and now we get to watch everyone else sign "their" guy and we get whats leftover....doesn't sound like an "Elite" program, does it.

your token conspiracy theorist...
It's not that the job itself isn't good, it's that everybody is aware that the college football establishment and media have been hell bent on trying to smear and destroy this program for years. They all know they'll have to fight against that.

We need a coach whose mindset is that he'd be motivated by the opportunity to kick those slimebags in the teeth rather than be accepted by them.

The administration DAMN sure "settled"! What a freaking joke this "search" for a HC has been.

RS is a great DC, but I have NO faith in him as our HC!

Settled?

Noone wanted to coach us. lol

We just took our sister to the prom.

Is there a fan base anywhere - including here - that doesn't think the media is out to get them?

Fire Paul Dee

Shannon as HC is a monumental blunder that could end UM FB..

this entire process has been a joke from the word go

From this thread a typical negative opinion

Re: It's official, Shannon accepted the position today what a joke. this program quite possibly might be going down the tubes. I obviously want to be wrong but honestly, the feeling I have right now is that we just hired Larry Coker back and LC was the worst coach I've known.

This is boring.

It's predictable.

It creates no buzz and does nothing to help the fans out, the season ticket base, donations. It accomplishes nothing but filling a role. He has no oomph or cache or, God forbid, experience.

This tells me one of two things happened. Either Shalala and Dee have their heads up their own asses or they just don't give a shit. Must be the latter because it's tough to get your head up your own ass.

I give up.

Dumb hire.

RIP #95

And my award for most negative thread title goes to ....
