Same circumstance here for CU and you guys remember him fondly!

The name, Dave Logan. Has been a high school coach here since his retirement (plus radio shows, play by play and host of other things). But he has found the time to coach HS football each and every year. In fact he has taken 3 different teams to the State Chamionships.

CU said "no experience"

Never know whether that will be the biggest mistake they ever made but Miami make also make that same mistake.

Gerry Faust pretty much screwed HS coaches everywhere when it comes to making the jump to a power conference school.

I think we can look forward to at least 3-4 more years of brawls and mediocrity. :tongue2:

It's really a hoot reading the PR about how Shannon "gets it", really understanding "the 'Cane culture". That can only mean 3-4 more years of brawls and mediocrity. :slappy:

Oh, and crying how Ohio State robbed them of a repeat. Sorry, forgot that important element of Cane culture.

Miami promotes assistant Shannon
Saturday, December 09, 2006

</IMG> Miami players Calais Campbell, left, and Jon Beason hug Randy Shannon after a news conference naming Shannon the coach of the Hurricanes.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. ? The University of Miami spent more than $30,000 on a consultant and conducted a nationwide search for a football coach, but it didn?t have to go far to find Randy Shannon.
Born in Miami and raised on Hurricanes football, Shannon was introduced yesterday morning as Miami?s new coach. A former Miami linebacker and the Hurricanes? defensive coordinator since 2001, Shannon replaces Larry Coker, who was fired Nov. 24.
Shannon, 40, becomes the school?s first black head football coach and only the second in the Atlantic Coast Conference since it was formed in 1953. He is one of six active black coaches among 119 Division I-A teams.
"I?m a football coach," Shannon said. "I don?t think it has to do with minority issues and all that. You hire the best coach. And I?m the best coach for this job."
Shannon signed a four-year contract that begins at $800,000 and includes bonuses that could boost the payout to just under $1 million. Coker made $1.8 million this season.
Shannon was chosen from a group of finalists that included Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez and Texas Christian coach Gary Patterson.
Rutgers coach Greg Schiano, once considered the front-runner to replace Coker, told Miami athletic director Paul Dee on Monday that he would not interview for the position.
During his seven-year run as Miami?s defensive coordinator, Shannon has earned a reputation as one of the nation?s top assistant coaches. He won the Frank Broyles Award in 2001 as national assistant coach of the year and his defenses annually ranked among the country?s best.
Among Miami players, he earned a reputation as a disciplinarian who was fair, but demanding and tough.
Shannon?s dedication, determination and no-nonsense approach forced the search committee to overlook his absence of head-coaching experience, Dee said.
"Balanced against the other things he brings to us, that wasn?t a big negative," Dee said. "I don?t think we would bring in a coordinator as a head coach from another school. But here, we know what we have in Randy."
Shannon has spent 13 years as a Hurricanes assistant sandwiched around three seasons (1998 to 2000) as an assistant with the Miami Dolphins. Shannon said he expects Coker to coach the Hurricanes ? as planned ? in the MPC Computers Bowl against Nevada in Boise, Idaho, on New Year?s Eve.

Miami Gardens ? The announcement of Randy Shannon as the football coach at the University of Miami got approval from some area players who have already made early commitments to the school.

"It really doesn't change my mind," Glades Central wide receiver Tarus McKinley said. "I think he is a good coach."

Broward and Palm Beach counties have been a solid foundation for football talent in recent years. Tyrone Moss, Jon Beason and Glenn Cook were among top recruits from Broward, while Brian Monroe and Devin Hester played in Palm Beach.

"I talked to Randy this morning about 7," St. Thomas Aquinas coach George Smith said. "We've known each other for a long time. I think he'll do a great job. He's a perfect choice."

Defensive back Major Wright and wide receiver Leonard Hankerson of St. Thomas still have Miami under consideration.

Shannon had been the defensive coordinator for the Hurricanes for the past six seasons. He replaces Larry Coker, who was fired after posting a 6-6 mark this year.

"You sell the program, you sell the university. You sell them what they have to expect from you," Shannon said. "You know what most kids want to know. What are you going to do for them and how are you going to make them succeed in life? If you have a plan on how they are going to succeed in life, fine. If you don't have a plan you won't ever have a shot at those kids."

Keeping the early commitments and convincing other players to make Miami their college choice will keep Shannon and his staff busy before signing day in February.

"He's a great coach," Glades Central running back Damien Berry said. "I'd be happy to play for him next year. I'm ready to go to the "U."

Shannon will have between 16 to 20 commitments he'll need to secure before signing day on Feb. 7.

Shannon, a graduate of Miami Norland, has won three national titles as both a player and coach. That resume and his ties to South Florida schools could boost recruiting in the tri-county area.

Glades Central senior wide receiver Deonte Thompson hasn't joined his teammates in committing to UM next season.

"UM is still on my list," Thompson said. "I might go down there to take a visit and see what's up."

Upon learning of Shannon's hiring, Hialeah-Miami Lakes defensive end Adewale Ojomo, who had been considering Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Tennessee, said he committed to UM. South Carolina receiver Daniel Adderley committed to the program last week.

They look at this as a "caretaker" move till the next hot prospect comes along.

Rarely does a team have as much opportunity to get a jump on the coaching hunt as Miami. They had to have known they were doing Coker in for some time. If you didn't land your 'hot prospect' this time around good luck next time when your underlying assumption is a even more years of mediocrity.

personally shannon might be a great coach but i think this program needed more of complete change instead of a promotion. they may go on to win games(which i see happening) but off the field and dare i say still on the field problems still seem like they would be more of a problem considering none of the previous staff did enough to keep the guys in check. true coker was relentless last year and put the hammer down on a lot of players but personally i think a coach has a certain demeanor to raise a responsible and mature football team kinda like this one guy tressel i know. but time will only tell.

Some inside dope on the Faust tenure at Notre Dame from a fellow Moeller teacher... he was PROMISED that if he had a winning record and ran a clean program he had a job for life. He was better than 500 against Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Penn State and USC. He ran into a loaded Air Force team, Navy with Napoleon McAllister, Pitt in the middle of a good run, North Carolina with a kid named Lawrence Taylor and RB Kevin Bryant and a Miami program that Howard Schnellbarger had just pulled out of the trash heap. In short, Jerry did well against the "tough opponents" on his schedule. He was done in by the "teams you ought to beat."

Jerry was told he could bring only one coach from Moeller and that he would have to keep the remaining assistant coaches. His replacement, Lou Holtz was allowed to bring as many assistants as he wanted or pick anyone he wanted on the staff from other schools.

I personally think he wasn't suited to college ball. He was a bit hokey about the religion thing. He had advantages at Moeller that he could achieve at any college... more coaches than the other guy was a big one... but his biggest problem was that he came in at a time when the rest of college football had caught up with Notre Dame.

Shannon, Weis among five coaches to visit troops in Kuwait

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- With a daughter serving in the military, Randy Shannon particularly understands the importance of supporting American troops.

The Miami coach will fly a long way this spring to make that point.

Shannon is among five college football coaches who'll head to Kuwait and other military bases in the Middle East this May to meet with U.S. troops and participate in some clinics. He'll be joined by Notre Dame's Charlie Weis, Georgia's Mark Richt, Auburn's Tommy Tuberville and Yale's Jack Siedlecki.

The trip is scheduled from May 20-26.

Miami's Shannon works his way back into recruits' homes

By DAVE HYDE - Sun Sentinel
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Rebuilding is one of those ideas that sound a lot easier than it actually is. It's like one of those infomercials that guarantee you language fluency in 15 minutes a day. Those look simple, too, until you've been at it for a couple of years.
Two seasons ago, Randy Shannon moved into the big office at the University of Miami and talked about rebuilding the football program. He knew the inheritance: The old stadium was gone; a new athletic director was coming; the on-campus facilities were so dilapidated he wrote NFL players begging for money; and all opposing recruiters had to mention were Bryan Pata's murder and the on-field riot with Florida International.
Parents of recruits hung up on him. Doors closed. He couldn't get close to the recruits he needed, really needed, especially with just a few weeks to recruit after being hired and a roster left so bare that only four players were taken in the past two NFL drafts, the worst Miami showing since the 1950s.
"Here's what I did," Shannon says.
He slides a sheet of paper across his office table.
"This is what helped," he says.
The paper is covered with statistics, multi-colored bar graphs and top-10 rankings. Florida and Florida State are on there. So are Ohio State and Alabama and other major programs that have been raiding South Florida of talent.
Maybe this will explain how Shannon works, even if it won't convince everyone his program is getting closer today. Because these statistics don't involve total offense or scoring defense or win projections.

Miami AD vows to keep coach Randy Shannon for long the term - ESPN
Miami AD wants to keep Shannon

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The season's first month was a clear success for Miami (FL) Hurricanes, with three wins over nationally ranked teams and plenty of reasons to believe the Hurricanes are on the cusp of rejoining the nation's elite.

For that, Randy Shannon may be on the verge of being rewarded handsomely.

After No. 11 Miami beat Oklahoma 21-20 for the program's most significant win in several years Saturday night, Hurricanes athletic director Kirby Hocutt reaffirmed that the university has no intentions of letting Shannon slip away. Shannon's contract expires after the 2010 season, but formal talks about an extension haven't yet taken place.

And any whispers that Shannon's future could be in jeopardy are certainly nonexistent now.

Here, Wandy throws his recruits under the bus and says they suck compared to the old coCaines, and also blames the lack of a good team on the fact it rains in Miami.

Bazooka, he is all yours. :slappy:

From the comments:

Was in Atlanta airport yesterday and saw a "Michael Irvin" edition of rosetta stone in the Rosetta Stone kiosk.
Sweet, now I can at least have an even shot at understanding what this guy is saying.
