Whoever they pick now will just be a "program keeper" until they find another guy who is hot.
I'll bet they let Randy Shannon take the reins for 3-4 years.

Good call, reportedly the term of the contract is 1 Million per annum, duration 4 years.

Edit - Canes board already has an Over/Under Thread on how long Shannon lives under the glare of the spotlight in Coral Gables.

UM chooses Shannon as head football coach

The University of Miami has a new head football coach.
UM defensive coordinator Randy Shannon accepted the position Thursday, according to a well-placed university source.
An announcement by UM is scheduled for Friday.
Shannon, 40, a Miami native, becomes only the sixth black head coach in Division I football. He replaces Larry Coker, who was fired last month after six seasons.
Shannon graduated from Norland High and then UM in 1989. He was a member of the 1987 Hurricanes national championship team and an 11th-round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. Shannon was a Miami Dolphins defensive assistant in 1998 and 1999 before becoming Miami's linebackers coach in 2000.
He returned to UM in 2001 as defensive coordinator, and became the first UM coach to win the Frank Broyles Award that year as the top assistant in college football. Shannon's defenses have been outstanding every season, including this one, in which UM (6-6) is ranked fifth in total defense, fourth in rushing defense and 12th in scoring defense. Shannon's son, Xavier Shannon, is an offensive lineman for Florida International University.
After practice Thursday, UM job candidate Mike Leach, head coach at Texas Tech, declined to speak with the media.http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/16189333.htm

He's like the Doogie Howser of football. He's probably gay too. :tongue2:

that's not really the point. they need to makeover the image of the whole program. it's like when a company is struggling. you dont fire the CEO then hire the CFO. they are too much alike. yes, miami's defense is good and i think they will be even better now but this does nothing to help their 'thug u' image.

When a company is struggling, the first step is to diagnose the problems. The Miami administrators think that Coker has been the problem and I agree with them. Coker simply did not possess the leadership to exert control over his program. After he let go of his assistants last season, the writing was pretty much on the wall.

On the other hand, Shannon was a former player who understands the culture at Miami. Miami is always going to be Miami. That fact has been determined by the type of local support and attitudes for years. If you look for somebody to just come in and change the culture, that's just going to blow up right in your face. The best move that the Miami adminstrators could have made was bring in a guy who not only understands but embraces the culture at Miami, and that guy is Shannon. He's got the chrisma to haul in the local recruits, Miami's number one problem over the last three to four years. That's just my first impression.

So who was the dumbshit that came up with almost 20 choices for the new head coach and didn't include Randy Shannon?

:!

Self-bashing is OK - but I'm usually in the RR for that.

The best move that the Miami adminstrators could have made ...

They all ready made two of the best moves in college football... they joined the Big East, then the ACC. Leaves them with an inner state rival, no games above the Mason-Dixon line after October 15, a league that sounds reputable to football analysts (ie a BCS league), and a better than reasonable chance to dominate the league for years to come.

\If Shannon was their guy why not just can Coker and name him coach mid season? Why the need for consultants and coaching search?
Because they needed to make a splash with a flashy hire, then reality set in: Nobody wants to coach at Miami. Three of their last five head coaches had no prior major college head coaching experience, and the other two used Miami specifically to get from mid-level, major conference schools to the NFL.

Howard Schnellenberger, no prior D1A HC experience.
Jimmy Johnson, step up from Oklahoma State before jump to NFL.
Dennis Erickson, step up from Washington State before jump to NFL.
Butch Davis, no prior D1A HC experience before jump to NFL.
Larry Coker, no prior D1A HC experience.

The sentiment this week is that some of the top coaches in the country would apparently rather be at North Carolina, South Carolina, Rutgers and Texas Tech than "The U."

Miami, Fla doesn't pay shit, the facilities are mostly an embarrassment for a perennial Top 10 power, the stadium is a dump, and the fans abandon the team after one loss.

Same circumstance here for CU and you guys remember him fondly!

The name, Dave Logan. Has been a high school coach here since his retirement (plus radio shows, play by play and host of other things). But he has found the time to coach HS football each and every year. In fact he has taken 3 different teams to the State Chamionships.

CU said "no experience"

Never know whether that will be the biggest mistake they ever made but Miami make also make that same mistake.

Exactly. All the pieces are there for Miami to be successful, and they don't need a big name at the headcoaching job to win games. In most years, they play quality opponents. They got a huge pool of local talent to choose. They have the reputation for producing NFL players. What was missing was that they didn't have a guy with enough charisma and energy to attract locals to the school or instill discipline within the team. They needed someone who can hold rein the horse and keep the program under control.

I can't stand CU, but I think Hawkins was a pretty good hire at the time. No clue how he'll turn out after this season, but Logan will still be around in 2 years :wink2:
