Coker won the 2001 NC, because of what Butch Davis built - PERIOD. He was handed the keys to one of the most badass rosters of players ever assembled in college football.
He didn't do a thing, and it showed 4 years later, when the program was a crumbled shadow of it's former self.
Shannon did good OFF the field, but on the field, it just wasn't working. Recruiting-wise, he did great, but coaching has been SERIOUSLY lacking the past 4 years.

Dude - it was a dilapidated POS.
It was owned by the city of Miami, and with all the greed, corruption, and money-stealing BS going on, they didn't want to put a dime into it. They wanted UM to fit the bill for refurbishment, and you're talking a few hundred million dollars.
But yeah, for the most part, I agree - I HATE Dolphin Stadium, pro player, landshark, Sun Life, WHATEVER the name of that shithole is...

Where they really screwed up was not building their own stadium back in the day. Now the fanbase/alumni are seemingly indifferent and the cost is prohibitive. USC & UCLA are the only big boy programs who can get away with not having a real on-campus stadium. Nobody else has a Rose Bowl or LA Coliseum just lying around.

Right now, would be impossible - land is so expensive there, it'd take half a billion just to get the land - one of the golf courses would be the only option. Then you factor in the stadium building costs, and you're easily looking at MINIMUM half a billion or more!

One of the objections with cutting RichRod loose is the idea that he changed the entire program from a philosophical standpoint, and that most coaches would have to tear it all down and start from scratch again. Any coach that comes in to replace Rodriguez is going to have to blow it up to some extent just because of the dearth of talent and disarray that the program is in. Mullen seems to me like the type that could find some useful parts in the scrap heap, while a guy like Harbaugh would probably have to blow it up completely.
Then again, Mullen is actually a PA native, maybe he's waiting on Paterno to finally kick the bucket.

HE is responsible for the 2001 NC team.
What he did for this program, post-Erickson the frigging cheater, I will be forever grateful. he is THE MAN, and yeah, I'm drunk, but he took this team from the shits, and made it a champion, NCAA penalties and all.
Gotta respect that kind of ability. NFL didn't work out for him, but look what he's done for UNC. Penalties and all, they've taken a few to the wire this year, missing like 6-8 starters that were suspended.
