Random Thoughts/Good Reads

As I was getting my hair cut today I came to the realization that getting your hair cut at a chain (i.e. Great Clips, Best Cuts, etc.) is pretty much the same experience as getting a lap dance at a strip club. The strippers for the most part are better looking, but there's a very similar mix of awkward conversation, tattoos, smokey breath, and my wallet being $15-20 lighter when it's over.

And, if you're lucky, a comparable amount of awkward rubbing...

It's funny you mention this, I had recently been remembering the old fashioned barbershops that my granddad used to take me too, the old male barbers, the playboy magazines, the whole experience...etc Nowadays wherever you go it seems like the same tatted up recovering meth addict or some other mental case/excon. I almost never feel comfortable. I've finally found a pretty good barber down in the hood, got that cigarette breath working though.

There was a guy in my home town, Carl. I was just a little guy when my father started taking me to Carl. Lots of hunting magazines. Occasional comics. Smell of cigarettes and tobacco. Carl eventually retired but kept cutting hair from his home and charging $1. My nephew was taken to Carl by my brother 20 years after my last hair cut by him!

“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say, ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”

The NC game and the Super Bowl are over. Nothing but March Madness, the NBA, baseball and hockey - all of which I have gradually weaned myself from - for the sporting mind to watch. A long dark night to pass through till the Buckeyes reemerge in September.

Two good reads lately Bill Bryson's One Summer, America in 1927. Really interesting look at the roots of Time magazine, Babe Ruth and Mrs. Gehrig, top news stories and Charles Lindberg.

Just finishing Dave Revisen's The Opening Kickoff. Stagg is not the person you thought he was. I now wonder why his name is on anything connected with college football. University of Chicago prior to Robert Hutchin's cleaning house.

Both are fast reads.
