Questions from a newby

Both refer to Michigan.
TSUN - That School Up North... or That State Up North. Usually the first one
scUM - A little play-on-words with UM (University of Michigan)

There are others for scUM like Missigan and M*ch*g*n and I'm sure many others. We also have a few for Notre Dame like NoD (injecting the 'o' to their typical abbreviation of ND which refers to their lack of a defense in recent years) or Ntre Ame (leaving out both the 'o' and the 'd' which refers to both their lack of offense and defense in recent years).

To which I would add that Saint Wayne Woodrow Hayes never said "Michigan." He would instead refer to them as, "that school up north." One account of his distaste for tsun involved a recruiting trip during which he is alleged to have run out of gas on the Michigan side of the border and proceeded to push his car to a station on the Ohio side so as to avoid paying any gas taxes which might somehow meander into the treasurer's office at Ann Arbor.

LOL. ROTF. Thanks for the history lessons on TSUN and scUM. Woody was a colorful and flambouyant figure in his own way and I can actually visualize him pushing his car across the border.

I would like to invite both of you over to:
Husker Fan Club - Nebraska Cornhuskers Message Board - Index page
and our big ten country sub-forum to repeat these answers. It would mean a lot more coming from you folks than me just carrying it over. That forum was added to the board as a place our new conference brothers & sisters could come to to fill us in on things like this.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions.

Funny you should mention the new jersies, ric. I remember one of the arguments against those uniforms was that by getting rid of the grey in the stripe, they would look more like Nebraska's jersies.

scUM also goes by the skunkweasels and The Whore (a play on Ann Arbor being a whore), among other nicknames. We've got a [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKnAjxnViGg"]great song [/ame]we like to sing about them too. Any other songs, see these fellas.

Any other questions, we're here to help!

That is to say, "that school up north" is the version that's repeated in polite company. I suspect in private Wayne Woodrow may have had a slightly more colorfully embellished title for the school of his arch nemesis.

Ah, and TBDBITL's favorite cheer? "Whose got the best damn band in the Land?"
"Ohio!"
"Who says so?"
"Michigan!!!"

Those of us who were there remember well that Bo spoke at Woody's memorial service in the 'Shoe.

Then, to finish the circle, at The Game in '06; the 'Shoe observed a respectful moment of silence for Bo.

Few may remember that Bo immediately followed the worst decade in UM football up to that point (this has been documented in the Statistics thread). He then brought them their best decade of the 20th century (by winning percentage).

Bo certainly doesn't have a resume to match Woody's, but both men did The Rivalry proud.

Right before Woody died, he spoke at some deal for Bo. I don't know what the deal was. I guess his health was failing, and his voice was going, but he drove to Michigan to be the keynote speaker on Bo's behalf. Then he drove back home and passed away. At least, that's the story I heard in HBO's special called something like "Ohio State vs. Michigan - The Rivalry". (I did a google search just now for "Ohio State Michigan HBO DVD" and found a bunch of offers.) If you haven't seen it, I strongly recommend it, regardless of whether you're a fan of Ohio State, Michigan, or any other team in college football.

Wow. So much of what I've read from you folks after I asked about the TSUN ans scUM acronyms is reminiscent of what we used to have with Oklahoma back in the old Big-8 conference days. When the Big-8 merged with what was left of the old SWC and formed the Big-12, that rivalry was tossed aside. This would be like the big-10 tossing aside the Michigan/tOSU rivalry.

Again I thank all of you for your responses to my questions. It's going to be a lot of great fun competing in this conference and more importantly the academic advantages and upscaling this will bring to Nebraska has just about everyone in Huskernation deliriously happy we've been warmly welcomed into the Big-10.

From my wife's family, I've gathered that there was a pretty stauch amount of hate for Colorado. Maybe it was just a difference of perspective.

My favorite slant on Oklahoma is Mobilehoma. Just like the way that sounds.

Colorado tries and tried and tried to bill themselves as our rival and we pretty much just ignored them as we pretty well owned them in all sports---not the stuff on which rivalries are built.
When the Nebraska/Oklahoma rivalry was on usually one or both teams were in the hunt for the MNC and the games were often legendary and epic in scope.

Another Oklahoma slant you'll see used a lot by Huskernation is Oklahomo.
