Questions from a newby

red in colorado

"Nebraska's back and we're here to stay"
As our University (Nebraska) is a new member of this outstanding conference many of us fans will have questions from time to time of what will appear very elemental in nature. These questions will be asked mostly from a perspective of respect and not wanting to offend any of our new brethren in the Big-10.

So my Question for OSU fans is this:
I've noticed many OSU alumni when talking about OSU will go out of their way to say:
"THE Ohio State University"
with a strong emphisis on the Word THE.
I just want to be filled in on the reasons why this is done and am I going to step on toes if I just use OSU or Ohio State in posts if I leave out the word THE.

Also, if you all would be so kind as to suggest good fan boards to check out from the rest of our new conference mates to register at so we can get to know and interact with them as well it would be greatly appreciated.

I frequent a Husker board --- Huskerfanclub.com --- which just opened a new "Big Ten Country" sub-forum in the football forum and I would like to invite you all to register and in that forum feel free to educate us newbies to the nuances of the Big-10.
Thanks, and I'm looking forward to Nebraska competing in the Big-10 and on the educational side of the ledger this move to your conference is going to be a giant leap forward for the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

I'm sure that someone will give you the history on THE, and it's usage to distinguish us from the other schools in Ohio. I am not that smart.

When people ask me about this, I always say it refers to Tradition, Honor, Excellence. Usually they leave me alone after that.

It is the proper name of the school.

For most, it's a point of pride. It's not an Ohio state university, it's certainly not Ohio University (where Frank Solich now coaches, by the way), it is THE Ohio State University, as in the one and only.

Plus it is the official name of the school, The Ohio State University. Not to mention you have Okie State, Oregon State. tOSU makes it known who you are talking about. No one will be offended if you leave the word "The" out....Unless you are a former player starting on Monday Night Football.

While I am far from an authority on this subject (fortunately we have some on this board who are), it's origin has to do with in-state politics as opposed to athletics. Hopefully one of our experts will show up and give you the full historical answer.

And welcome to the Big Ten!!

1. No need for you to use "the", OSU, Ohio St, Buckeyes are all fine. Just don't call them "Ohio" or say their school colors are "Garnet & Gray" (Bob Davie).

2. It stemmed from legal battles between Ohio U & OSU over the rights to the word 'Ohio'

3. The school's marketing has emphasized THE, and NFL Alumni took it to another level by boldly emphasizing that word during MNF introductions.

..........

School boards:

MSU - SpartanTailgate.com is their best board
UM - Mgoblog is their best site, the board is alright. UM's scout free board has withered away into a cesspool of flaming. It used to be the best free board on Scout's network.
PSU - Audibles (PSU Scout) is the main one I visit, but it's a little nuts at times.

I don't usually visit other boards besides those.

From the horse's....errrr Buckeye's mouth itself:

In 1986, a new University logo was introduced in the hopes of moving away from the "OSU" symbol, which had been used since 1977. The change from simply "OSU" was said to "reflect the national stature of the institution." University officials wanted the institution to be known as "The Ohio State University," again, since OSU could also mean Oregon State and Oklahoma State University.
However, the "The" was actually part of the state legislation when the university was renamed in 1878. The following excerpt is from the Board of Trustee minutes:
"...the educational institution heretofore known as the 'Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College,' shall be known and designated hereafter as 'The Ohio State University.'"
Those who wanted the name change thought the original name was too narrow in scope, and that it was inadequate for the institution that was the only beneficiary of the land grant act. President Edward Orton was insistent that a new name would separate the institution from other colleges in Ohio.
Legend also has it that "The" was used to show the other colleges which institution was supposed to be the leader in the state - both in size and in financial support from the legislature.

Looks like you are right. What's really sad is that no one stopped him before repeat performances...

"Token boy" Mark Jones said it last year at Indiana and this year I think during the Northwestern game and during the Michigan State game. He does no pre-game research at all. You'd figure a sportcaster for a prominent sports network would at least know the school colors of one of the biggest college football programs of all time. I never heard him refer to Michigan as the "Yellow and Blue".
