1. No need for you to use "the", OSU, Ohio St, Buckeyes are all fine. Just don't call them "Ohio" or say their school colors are "Garnet & Gray" (Bob Davie).

2. It stemmed from legal battles between Ohio U & OSU over the rights to the word 'Ohio'

IT'S NOT OHIO U. :roll1:

It's Ohio... damn it :drunks:

As our University (Nebraska) is a new member of this outstanding conference many of us fans will have questions from time to time of what will appear very elemental in nature. These questions will be asked mostly from a perspective of respect and not wanting to offend any of our new brethren in the Big-10.

So my Question for OSU fans is this:
I've noticed many OSU alumni when talking about OSU will go out of their way to say:
"THE Ohio State University"
with a strong emphisis on the Word THE.
I just want to be filled in on the reasons why this is done and am I going to step on toes if I just use OSU or Ohio State in posts if I leave out the word THE.

Also, if you all would be so kind as to suggest good fan boards to check out from the rest of our new conference mates to register at so we can get to know and interact with them as well it would be greatly appreciated.

I frequent a Husker board --- Huskerfanclub.com --- which just opened a new "Big Ten Country" sub-forum in the football forum and I would like to invite you all to register and in that forum feel free to educate us newbies to the nuances of the Big-10.
Thanks, and I'm looking forward to Nebraska competing in the Big-10 and on the educational side of the ledger this move to your conference is going to be a giant leap forward for the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Welcome - you've come to the right board for Florida Gator baseball, track, fishing and fencing updates!

The "THE" has been part of the university's official name since shortly after its founding. In the 1960s and 70s, Ohio had a Governor with some perverse views on structuring higher education in the state--many of which it's always been theorized sprung from his insecurity over having flunked out of Ohio State his freshman year.

Despite Ohio State having been founded expressly to serve the role as the state's flagship public university and this role having been written into state law in the Eagleson Bill of 1906, Rhodes felt that all public universities were equals and there shouldn't be a "flagship" campus, and he directed state policy to reflect this. The "THE" was emphasized under President Jennings who came in at the end of Rhodes' tenure and was the President who turned things around and undid the damage that Rhodes had done to the university. Emphasizing "THE" was a subtle reminder to the state's newspapers, politicians and citizenry of Ohio State's historical pre-Rhodes role in the higher education system--one that would quickly be reasserted once Rhodes was out of office for good.

From there, the NFL players kind of latched onto it and made it the big deal that it's become.
