Head Coach
Looking at play notes from early and mid-season and then contrasting them vs The Game.
What's incredibly eye-opening is the lack of significant progress and consistent improvement week to week from Will's decision making and ball placement. Mistakes made week 1 were mistakes made week 8, and mistakes made week 8 were made week 12/13.
I can't quite tell if it's a chicken or the egg... Perhaps a bit of both? It's indictive of his abilities and ceiling as a QB but also the coaching staff on growing him as a passer. WH came to tOSU to improve his mental and physical talents along with his NFL stock. I fear we've sort of failed him in that regard.
But he and the coaches have a playoff run to help turn that perception around and give Will a fighters chance at a draft slot.
Will’s lack of arm strength puts Ryan Day in a bind. And I’m not excusing Ryan Day bc he needs to game plan around it…..it’s a limitation he took on when he essentially let Kyle McCord walk.
One of Ryan Day’s favorite pass plays is the “7 yard out/stop” to far side of field. It’s been a common talking point for years, that OSU consistently had QB’s with enough arm strength to make that throw at any given moment. Under Day, Haskins, Fields, Stroud, McCord could all make that throw. It’s a free 7 yards under normal circumstances…..
Will Howard doesn’t have the arm strength to make that throw….its a recipe for disaster as we saw against Michigan.
I think having that route as a staple in Ryan Day’s offense has really hamstrung this team at times….it was damn near a free 7 yards when needed. We just don’t have that ability right now and it’s a massive struggle to find “easy” yards.
