QB1 Will Howard (Official Thread)

Will Howard did not have a good day. Something was off in his throws early and often. Might have/would have been different if Michigan's DB hadn't tackled Smith in the end zone to prevent a TD. That was soon followed by the just-short-of-a-pick-six. But he missed several throws. More than once Michigan left Henderson alone in the flat to keep three men on Smith. Will either didn't see it, felt he had enough time to see it, or was told not to throw it to Henderson.

Any of you who are more savvy on coaching know why the Bucks weren't able to take advantage of the 3 men on Smith? Of course, when you're running on 1st and 2nd down, it doesn't leave much time to discover what's going on in the passing game.

Which leads me to question 2. If Will was hurt, or couldn't hit something, was Brown ready to go? I'm still shaken by how poor the QBs looked against Mizoo.

That's why I want Day fired. Howard obviously was to hurt to get it done, but Day didn't have a backup ready to run the offense. Its pathectic. Remember when Saban put in Tua to replace Hurts in the national championship game? That's the balls and collective coaching it takes to win championships at this level. He has failed at this 2 years in a row.

I thank the guy for trying, and putting his heart into the culture and program for the short time he was here. But as much as I wanted to be, I was never won over by his play. He hesitates to throw deep. He doesn’t see the field well despite his size. Guys are running free and he throws into a crowd. Rarely makes the correct read on the read option. He moves like a semi in the open field despite that mythical 22 mph track speed we’ve heard so much about. And he has a penchant for at least one, sometimes two, inexplicably terrible throws a game that end up an INT. The receivers really made him look good at times. We watched all these highlight videos of a gun slinger with wheels, and long TD run after long TD run during his time at K State. And all of us started fantasizing about not having a statue of Kyle McCord permanently sitting in the pocket. Well, we saw absolutely none of that this season. It takes more than a 70%+ completion rate to achieve the goals a program like OSU has.

This is a running theme in the Day tenure, backup QB development. If Brown isn't ready to go by now, it is time to move on and start giving Sayin more reps, maybe with the 1s during garbage time next year. I was trying to watch the Purdue garbage time and I couldn't tell if the backup receivers were getting open enough to allow him to throw it to them.

Unless they hit the portal for another transfer QB next year, Sayin may very well be the starter. Him or St. Clair. Howard is gone after this year.

The little we did get to see of the backups at QB this year would absolutely point to Sayin next year at this time. Not discounting St. Cair.

I’m sure the whole off season will be another round of Day telling us about a tight QB battle and not being ready to name a starter.

Edit: Day really needs to get this right next year. 2 years of Mediocre QB have really cost the Buckeyes.

They'll have to keep the competition open at least through camp in order to try to keep them all for the season. We were really spoiled with QB's so dropping back to average feels worse than it probably should. A similar thing happened at DL when we went from Bosa to Bosa to Young. We've had some good players on the DL since then, but none of them can compare to those three.

I'm not sure if the picks puckered up Kelly and Day's assholes and they weren't comfortable letting Howard air it out like they did on the 2 minute drive, but that should have been the whole game not just 1:30 at the end of the first half.

Howard didn't seem right after he got knocked out of the game and that wind was insane down on the field towards the end of the game.

Does anyone have a guess on how many snaps came Will's way that were not in their optimal placement? Basically, how many times did he have to look elsewhere to grab a snap that wasn't where it needed to be, which could have messed up his timing?
Virtually every snap seems off-rhythm. Frankly, I'd be ok with giving Padilla a shot.

That was definitely a part of it, but i agree with what has been said, he looked off all day - I dont know if he tried to put too much on himself for this game, he said all the right things leading up to the game, and maybe he just took it too personal/tried too much and froze?
