How does a team prepare for Cam Newton, the first player in NFL history with 30-plus touchdown passes (39) and 20-plus touchdown runs (21) in his first two seasons?
Well, to hear Raiders players tell it, you pop in third-string quarterback Terrelle Pryor in practice and voila.
"Terrelle is the closest guy to Cam," running back Mike Goodson said. "We've got the guy."
Goodson played with Newton in Carolina last year and is with Pryor now in Oakland. And Goodson is not the only one saying how helpful Pryor has been simulating Newton in practice this week.
"It's been good," offensive coordinator Greg Knapp said. "You don't have to coach it up as much on defense" because the players can see it on the practice field.
Knapp said Pryor has done a good job of telling defensive players what he's seeing and what they're doing well.
"I am just trying to teach them a little bit," Pryor said. "If they can key on things that I tell them they are doing great, they'll be good. But if he gets to the edge, that's when problems happen.
Newton "is going to make plays. We just have to minimize it, and I am trying to help as much as I can."
Knapp said Pryor, who got in Sunday's win over Kansas City for three plays, will play this Sunday on third downs and "maybe in the red zone - try to create a different look for the defense."
