Pryor trying to do Davis' memory proud

Terrelle Pryor has his sights set on living up to Al Davis' expectations for him.

The Oakland Raiders are being run differently under new general manager Reggie McKenzie and new head coach Dennis Allen than they were during the legendary Al Davis era. For one player, though, living up to the expectations of Davis -- who died last October at age 82 -- is still an important commitment.

Terrelle Pryor wants to be so much more than an answer to a trivia question.

The Raiders? selection of the embattled former Ohio State quarterback in the third round of the 2011 supplemental draft last August was classic Davis. It was all his decision, and it was the final draft pick of his life. In Pryor, the Raiders got an immensely talented athlete with great measurables. But they also got a project; it was a familiar boom-or-bust pick by Davis.

Once he joined the Raiders last summer, Pryor had some memorable conversations with Davis, in which the owner often told Pryor what he expected from him. Pryor said he talked to Davis on the phone a couple of times a week up until Davis? death. Now that he is gone, Pryor uses his short time with Davis as motivation as he tries to make the climb from risky pick to starting NFL quarterback.

?That drives me,? Pryor said in a recent session with media members. ?Because the last pick -- the last pick may not mean anything. I might not mean anything to anybody. But to me, you know, it kind of felt like -- last pick of a guy that made a legacy of football. He was just a well-known guy. Being the last pick ... I mean, that's special, just in that sense, just how his name is always brought up. He's on HBO shows now after his death. It's just an honor, how much I have to, I want to.?

Raiders' Terrelle Pryor seeking quarterback tutoring from Rich Gannon
By Jerry McDonald [email protected]
Posted: 06/13/2012

The education of Terrelle Pryor as an NFL quarterback will include a tutorial by the last Raiders player to win the Most Valuable Player award.

"We're in contact with Rich Gannon and we're going to get together with him," Pryor said Wednesday following the second day of practice at the Raiders' mandatory minicamp.

Contacted by phone, Gannon said Pryor reached out to him last season about the possibility of a meeting. A return message wound up in Pryor's spam folder, and Gannon confirmed the two will meet at some point before the Raiders report for training camp in Napa on July 29.

"It's not like all of a sudden he's going to come out, work with me for a day and throw for 5,000 yards," Gannon said. "That's not how it works. But I'm always anxious to go out and work with someone who wants to get better, whether it's a guy who plays for the Raiders, the Jets, or whoever."

The NFL's MVP in 2002, Gannon's schedule includes working the Green Bay Packers preseason games -- where he met current Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie -- as well as being an NFL analyst for CBS and being co-host on a Sirius NFL radio show.

He has no interest in coaching but has volunteered his services to the Raiders in the past, with the club turning a deaf ear because of comments Gannon made that were construed as critical of the organization and late owner Al Davis.

Pryor struggled with some of his passes during minicamp _ several of his deeper throws wobbled noticeably -- but he also showed a nice touch on intermediate and swing routes and his sub-4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash is stunning to watch when he breaks out of the pocket.

He hopes to compete with offseason free agent signee Matt Leinart to be the backup for starting quarterback Carson Palmer.

"I'm working hard every day. Sometimes it's not the best days," Pryor said. "I'm still learning a new offense here. I'm not taking a lot of reps. When I'm just taking certain reps it's just not crisp right now. After I get a couple of reps I should be fine."

So far, coach Dennis Allen has seen the kind of work ethic necessary to be a successful NFL quarterback -- the same kind of work ethic that made Gannon a Raiders locker room leader.

"He's made progress, but he's still along way away," Allen said. "The thing that I've liked about him has been his demeanor and the way he's been willing to work and get better. I think as long as he does that, he's got enough athletic talent that eventually he's going to become a player."

Pryor said he hopes to blend plays from the schemes of quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp to review with Gannon.

"Obviously I'm going to take the playbook and grab a couple of receivers, maybe some younger high school guys, maybe some NFL guys and just run the script that I have and have them run the same routes and go through my reads," Pryor said. "(I) can't get that enough. Like I said I don't take a lot of reps so I have to rep it by myself even if it has to be with a ghost to do my footsteps that's what I'll have to do. I'll get better. I'll be working hard."

Gannon, who like Pryor was an athletic quarterback in college at Delaware who some teams saw as a wide receiver, acknowledged the prospect's stunning gifts but noted the beginning of his career has been less than ideal.

Taken in the supplemental draft by Davis last year, Pryor first served a five-game suspension and was a non-factor as a rookie.

"He's in a tough spot," Gannon said. "The guy that hand-picked him is no longer around. They brought in Leinart. Just as he's getting used to one playbook they hand him another one. I've talked to (Jon) Gruden about him. He's a good guy. He wants to do the work. Wants to get better. Those are the guys you can't say no to."

Terrelle Pryor: People don?t know that I?m a pocket passer
Posted by Michael David Smith on June 13, 2012, 8:38 PM EDT
Terrelle Pryor, Carson Palmer AP

Terrelle Pryor is at the Raiders? minicamp this week trying to demonstrate that he?s a quarterback first and an athlete second.

Pryor talked to reporters in Oakland today and said that while it?s true that he?s a good athlete who ran for more than 2,000 yards at Ohio State and could have played Division I college basketball, he?s primarily a pocket passer. Pryor said he?s often wrongly lumped in with college quarterbacks who thrived in a spread offense.

?A lot of people don?t know that at Ohio State I didn?t really run a spread offense, where you?re running around and stuff,? Pryor said. ?I was in the pocket going through progressions. Maybe not four or five like I?m doing here, but I did a good bit, and I completed a lot of balls under center. Obviously I?m an athlete so I always think I can out-run anybody or whatever the case may be ? I believe in my ability ? but sometimes you?ve got to get the ball into other guys? hands and just be the point guard. That?s all I?m trying to do, stay in the pocket and get it to the right guys.?

Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFillippo has singled out Pryor for praise this offseason, and Pryor says that he?s trying to become just the kind of quarterback DeFillippo wants him to be.

?If something breaks down I can get out and make a play, but I just try to stay in the pocket, go through my progressions and do exactly what the coaches want,? Pryor said.

Pryor has no chance of unseating Carson Palmer as the Raiders? starting quarterback, and he?s an underdog to beat out Matt Leinart as the No. 2 quarterback as well. But Pryor has the right attitude: He wants to prove that he can be a pocket passer in an NFL offense, and if he keeps working he?ll get that opportunity somewhere.

Matt Leinart, Terrelle Pryor vie to be Raiders' backup
33

By Gregg Rosenthal
Around The League editor
Published: July 19, 2012

Training camp is finally almost here. They allow tackling there and everything. Around the League will count down the top 30 position battles to watch throughout the preseason.

No. 26. Raiders backup quarterback: Matt Leinart vs. Terrelle Pryor
Top 30 training camp position battles

? This is the only backup quarterback battle on our top 30 list. It's just too weird to ignore. These are two of the most polarizing college quarterbacks of the last decade, now adrift in the NFL.

? In one corner, we have Leinart. He's the heavy favorite because he's familiar with offensive coordinator Greg Knapp's scheme. Still, it's easy to forget that Leinart is coming off a broken collarbone. Leinart reportedly just was "getting it" in Houston before he got hurt, but this is a guy who has lost surprising battles in the past. (To Kurt Warner and ... Dan Orlovsky.)

? Pryor might have considered leaving football in 2011, but now he's said strongly he doesn't plan to be a backup. The Contra Costa Times believes Pryor has worked hard this offseason and has a legitimate chance to unseat Leinart. That would be a surprise.

? It's possible Pryor could be active on game days over Leinart because he occasionally can help on "Wildcat" plays. There has been talk of using Pryor's athleticism.

? No matter who loses this battle, we all win because you can poke fun of your resident USC or Ohio State fan. Because those fans bases aren't obnoxious at all.

Projected Winner: Leinart.

Important summer begins for Terrelle Pryor
July, 30, 2012
By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com

NAPA, Calif. -- Terrelle Pryor's first full-length training camp will likely be one of ups and downs for the talented, but raw No. 3 quarterback of the Oakland Raiders.

The first day of this important camp was more of a downer than a positive experience for Pryor, who the Raiders took last August in the supplemental round. Just before the end of practice, Pryor made a terrible decision on a ball that was intercepted for a would-be touchdown deep in the offense?s territory.

Pryor was inconsistent in the offseason as well. While he has shown flashes, there is no doubt he has a lot of work to do. He has an outside chance of beating Matt Leinart for the No. 2 quarterback job, but the odds are Pryor will be the No. 3 quarterback again this season.

This is a vital camp for Pryor, because he missed a lot of time last season after coming to camp lat because of the supplemental draft and because of a five-game NFL suspension to start his career.

New Oakland coach Dennis Allen wants to see Pryor make continued progress this summer.

?I have expectations of him to develop as a quarterback on a daily basis,? Allen said Monday. ?I?m not setting anything as far as where I want to see him on the depth chart or how many passes or anything like that. I just want to see him get better every day. That?s what he?s come out here and tried to do, and if he continues to do that, at the end of the day he?s going to be all right.?
