5 thoughts on Braxton Miller's 'best play' ever and Ohio State's hatred of Michigan: Buckeye BrunchUrban Meyer said Braxton Miller made "his best play as a college football quarterback" when he stood in the face of pressure from Indiana's defense and fired a pass to tight end Jeff Heuerman on a third-and-17 play early in the third quarter. Heuerman gained 25 yards, and on the ensuing snap, Miller connected with Devin Smith on a 39-yard touchdown strike.
"The weather conditions, with a guy bearing down on him, and that is his best play at quarterback since we've been here," Meyer said. "That is his best, and he knows it, I know it, Tom Herman knows it. ... He didn't panic out of the pocket. He stepped, delivered the ball, and that might be worth going back and watching that fantastic play."
Troy Smith to Braxton: Come back to Ohio State
CLEVELAND -- The last Ohio State quarterback to win a Heisman Trophy would like to see Braxton Miller back for next season to try to win one of his own.
Troy Smith is home in Cleveland for the holidays, and during a break in a charity event Tuesday afternoon Smith said if Miller asked his opinion on where he should play football next season, Smith would tell Miller to "definitely come back" for his senior season at Ohio State and wait until 2015 to enter the NFL Draft.
"I've come to understand and learn over the years, that where he wants to go in the NFL, you want it to be a closed casket type deal," Smith said. "When you make that leap, you want it to be a shoo in. No type of gray area whatsoever, no wondering what might have (been).
"If I was Braxton, I would pound the playbook, pound the playbook, pound the playbook and try to be the top quarterback when he comes out, be the best he can be. I wouldn't want to be the second guy, the third guy, anywhere but in the best position he can be. And he has the talent to eventually be in that spot."
Contd....
Saw this on the scout board. As of right now Braxton is 5th in odds to win the heismanMiller's progression has been simply remarkable. To play the way he has in these weather conditions is very, very impressive. I fully believe his stats would be right there with the Heisman front runners without missing those games and half-way decent weather conditions.
Amazing he still has a shot at 2,000/1,000 after missing three games.
The only thing I could see if he stays is he wouldn't have the senior front four playing the line next year which could damage his stats. I am sure that is something to ponder.I've leaned towards the same thing Troy is saying- while the physical tools are there, the NFL can eat you alive if everything isn't perfect. And whether you come out 1 year or the other, there's ALWAYS the next group of draftees that become the new toys for NFL teams.
I guess it may be because I've personally known a couple recent examples of "fringe" type guys- guys who have made gameday rosters, made official stats, made some real good plays, and had good reviews- but they quickly found themselves out of the game despite all that. Now these were skill position players so it may be different than a QB. And obviously Braxton wouldn't enter nearly as "fringe" as my examples.
His physical tools will afford him a few years of NFL roster spots- bare minimum- with likely a chance to start a few games, too. But the higher you get drafted the more years he'll add to that, should he fall out of the limelight.
But even those few guaranteed years would be pretty dang nice, so I have no beef with going for a payday.
In summary: Go Braxton. Fuck Michigan.

By staying it gives him an extra year to mature physically, mentally, and emotionally, plus have an extra year to work on his mechanics. Would staying help him? Definitely. Will these advantages be enough for him to come back? Only Braxton can make that decision. The only thing I could see if he stays is he wouldn't have the senior front four playing the line next year which could damage his stats.
