QB/WR Braxton Miller (B1G POY, National Champion, OSU HOF)

For those who say his passing has improved a lot, I disagree. While he was better in the second half, he looked virtually unchanged from last year during the first half. He was shot-putting a lot of throws and was inaccurate. Still, it was the first game of the season and he did start throwing a little better in the second half, so I'll just write it off as first-game-rust.

Of course, we're all entitled to different points of view, but aside from a couple deep throws that were wobbly, I found his touch and spiral to be much improved. His loft pass on the PA to Philly was something we didn't see much of last year, the TD to Devin was crisp even though it was slightly high, and Philly Brown's TD catch all showed the diversity of Braxton this year whether he's throwing on the move or in the pocket. And most of this was in the first half still. I think it was by far much better than last year. Granted, there is still much room for improvement, but I think the work with Herman and Urban was shown immediately to be above the work of Siciliano.

Re-watching, if the two passes to Devin weren't high, the defender would have been able to block them. Not saying that was Miller's intention, but perfect throws aren't always a good thing.

I know Urban scoffed at the Heisman question in the press conference but I can seriously see Braxton getting an invite this year. I'm not saying he would win it, but getting an invite? It's possible. He is talented enough and playing in the perfect scheme for his talents. Only reason would be not enough time in the new system. He had the kind of plays Saturday that players make who get invited to New York. No question about that.

If he keeps averaging damn near 400 YPC in offense - yeah, I'd say he has an outside shot at a New York invite.

Hell, if he averages 300yards combo of passing/rushing he'll start getting alot more talk all over the country.

I'm expecting around 2,300 passing yards, 20-24 TD's, with around 850-1,100 rushing yards and 10-14 TD's. Great numbers, but not Heisman-worthy numbers, but I think either next year or his senior year is when he could be putting up the 3,000+ passing yards and 30 TD's and 800+ rushing yard seasons.

The Heisman is all about the team though.

Really?

Statistics Att Comp Pct Yds TD Int Rating Att Yds Avg TD
2006 311 203 65.3 2,542 30 6 161.9 72 204 2.8 1

I don't expect him to be in the conversation this year but the numbers you posted would certainly qualify.

In 2006 those were good numbers

Other than Cam Newton, (who still did over 2800 yards) QBs are in the 4500 range that win the heisman.

Andrew Luck was over 3500 yards.

Since 2006: Tebow threw for 3286 in 2007, Bradford threw for 4720 in 2008, Newton threw for 2854 in 2010, and RGIII threw for 4293 in 2011.

I'm not sure your 4500 range is entirely accurate, particularly since it is pretty obvious that running the ball has been a huge part of every winner's game outside of Bradford and Braxton clearly has that going for him.

Luck didnt rush for 1,000+ yards, either. Two completely different styles of quarterback...

I agree on the styles. However, I'm not ready to proclaim Miller as a viable option for the Heisman. Could he get there? Maybe....but he'll have to play lights out for a larger part of the season before I can say that.

Troy wasn't about so much of the stats, but the big plays he produced on the big stages. Adrian Peterson being hurt kind of helped as well.

No reason to believe Braxton's story couldn't be any different. Am I ready to crown him better then Troy? Not quite. But if he even maintains close to the level of play we saw against Miami and learns to calm himself in the 1st quarter of play/within the offense - won't be long before the country is singing his praises.

Urban knows exactly what he has. It was one of the bigger reasons he came to tOSU.

If he passes for 2500+ yards, rushes for 1000+ yards, and accounts for 30+ TDs, he'll most certainly will be a "viable option" for the Heisman. He won't win it as a sophomore with those numbers, but he'll get an invite especially if we run the table or go 11-1.

With the anti-postseason ban bias, I think he'd have to go undefeated

Zero effect on the Heisman vote...absolute zilch.

I disagree, just from the perspective of "not as much in the conversation" for the team in general...

Having said that, all of this was against a not very good MAC school, and I'd be happy with a year of improvement and learning with some bumps along the road and going into next year thinking he's really gonna kick a bunch of arse. I'd prefer he didn't have anything near 1000 yards rushing honestly... but, he's gonna get what he gets. (Actually I wouldn't mind a K rushing, I'd just prefer it came on less than 200 carries or whatever he's on pace for.)
