Kicked off the team may be too extreme. On the other hand, a two game suspension is also too extreme, but in the other direction. The third hand is where it should land, right upside his haid, with a long (probably season killing for him) suspension. At least three games into the next season, if not more.

"this happens at every program...", That is the most insulting thing said in this thread (though it's mostly true). It just shouldn't happen at the best University in the country. Just because the Florida teams do it, or scUM does it, or Cooper's teams did it, is a reason for us NOT to do it!

I think the one thing that benefits Troy is the timeline for what happened. I believe the alleged booster benefit actually took place in the spring, not recently - at least that is my understanding from what was originally reported. I think Troy's behaviour might have been different had the payment been offered after the MoC/ESPN article broke, rather than before. For that reason, I don't think it's fair to blame Troy for giving ESPN and Tom Friend credibility for their previous stories, since Troy's incident apparently took place well before any of the other issues were reported in October.

I would not be in favor of cutting Troy if this were his first offense, but to me the death knell for him isn't just this, but it's the complaints about PT after Week 3, and his arrest prior to the Mich game at the end of last season. With everything that has gone on with Troy, I think this is his third strike, so he should be out. Let him keep his scholarship and complete his education, but no more suiting up in the S&G on Saturdays.

I have to admit that I've lost track of the timing of the Smith incident due to the wide variety of things posted. If it happened back in the spring, which I believe is the case, I'm mildly more tolerant: Take what the NCAA gives you and move on. If he did something after Clarett spewed his latest round of crap, I'm less tolerant a la "DAMN man, do you have a brain AT ALL"? In either event, not having any insider info. at all as to how the program deals with things or what other issues Smith may have, I'll trust the program's judgment over any outside hatchet job. Besides, if OSU throws Smith under the bus, that will only INCREASE the condemnation of the program, whatever Herbie and others may say NOW about OSU needing to make "a statement": It will get painted as Geiger and Tressel protecting themselves from the altruistic pressure created by ESPN, who only cares about the "kids" of course, without caring about a poor black "kid" athlete who "made a mistake" because they realized that JZ was good enough to win with. It would also probably kill the nice Glenville connection.

Contrary to the stupid expression, perception is NOT reality, and I don't think OSU should be guided by the "perception" created by those with their own nasty agenda. I'm plenty annoyed with Smith, but penalties should be proportionate to wrong doing, whatever the "perception" is.

Let me clarify...it should not happen; we need to do all we can to control it; but it does happen. Is this any different than what Tressel and Geiger said? Rogue boosters? Are we so naive as to think this will not always be a problem to young college athletes.

Jim Senator Tressel is an elite, college football coach not a babysitter.

Whose feelings are being hurt. Open you eyes man! If the truth hurts then say ouch.

Sometimes it is embarrasing to represent the Scarlet and Gray. As fans, many of us are arrogant. I really think that we as fans of the program should tone it down a notch. Why are the florida schools and UM always being mentioned when it comes to wrong doings. They are not in the news right now, we are. Compared to other high profiles schools what have we really acomplished outside of the National Championship season.

I am a die hard fan, but I do know our role. We are not far from it but the only ones that can really run smack are OU and SC fans.

If I knew that I was more talented than the next man then I would let it be known. His comments may have been ill advised, but it is quite obvious who should be behind center talent wise. Why was he not allowed to run during the spring game anyway? By being loyal JT kept the team from playing in a bowl game yesterday instead of on the 29th.

A season suspension at least? What is really going on? You all really want to see Zwick back in there. I think I am out until August.

Geiger supposedly was going to try to get the 2-game suspension reduced to one game in order to avoid Smith missing the spring and fall practices. The 2-game suspension is more than Smith simply missing two games...it's his missing a year's worth of practice with his team. That's a punishment that is far more severe than the "2-game" label implies.

I have been very much in favor of kicking him off the team. But I agree with Jagdaddy and also with some comments that AKAK made the other night. It is not only that it seems tactically not in our interest to kick him off the team, for all the reasons Jagdaddy puts forward, but also it is not in the interest of Troy Smith.

Smith really screwed up. He was stupid. He has irreversibly changed his college football career by taking this money. But, he is a kid. And college kids do stupid things, at least we all did when we were in college.

So, I believe he should be given a suspension that has some teeth. Not two games, more. And then, he should have to fight his way back on to the field through exceptional effort in the classroom, in practice, and in the weight room. Given a second chance, the irreversible change could be for the better.

some of you guys are ridiculous. the comments i've read are insane. saying that this is his "third" strike? WTF? Because he was competitive enough to state that he wanted some playing time? It's not like he went to the media and said "god justin zwick sucks, tressel is an idiot, i should be fucking playing".

and that incident with santonio holmes? that was nothing. they were breaking up a catfight and in the process violated curfew. WOW, WHAT A JERK AND A BAD SEED TROY SMITH IS. :roll2:

This is a kid that made ONE mistake. ONE. By all accounts, he is a good kid and a very hard worker. His teammates like him. His coaches like him.

This happened in the SPRING. LONG before the clarett story broke.

He made a mistake and will serve the appropriate punishment. If Tressel decides that it should be 2 games, then 2 games it is. If he decides 6 games, then 6 games it is. I don't care. However, Tressel should NOT base his punishment based on what he feels that outsiders will think. If Trev Alberts thinks it's not harsh enough, that's just too bad. I personally don't care what he or anyone else thinks.

I don't care how the media or how fans of other schools perceive us. They can make fun of us all they want. The ONLY thing that I care about is what's best for Troy Smith, the team, and the university. And in this instance, I trust the judgment of Jim Tressel more so than the judgment of media talking heads or internet message board posters.

For us to sit here and pontificate about what his punishment should be is ridiculous. When my neighbor's kids misbehave, I don't tell my neighbor what to do. He punishes them as best as he sees fit. I don't get involved or tell him how to raise his kid. Ohio State Football is a family, and Jim Tressel is the head. While we care deeply about this family, we are NOT a part of it. I trust Jim Tressel to do as he sees fit.

Kicking him off the team would be disgusting. You people act like these kids owe us something. Because now that other fans can make fun of us, that shame is just too much and Troy Smith should never play again. Whatever.

VLMarti on Bucknuts, father of Nick Mangold, knows Troy Smith to be a good kid and wrote a great post on there a while back about this exact same subject. I wish I could find it and paste it here.

Jim Tressel has strong beliefs which are not swayed by the overreacting media and general public. Thank God for that.

This happened in the SPRING. LONG AFTER the Clarett story broke. About a year after. The Clarett thing happened in 2003. The Smith thing happened in 2004. Big difference.

How do trouble makers get defended all the time? When the Clarett incident happened, a couple of years ago, many, too many, came repeatedly to his defense. And the band played on. I'm not here to judge him, most of us aren't. But the facts have been laid out, and admitted to by Smith.

Of course we as the Buckeye Nation will stand behind whatever Tressel says. But until he says, we are just giving an opinion.

Smith will be fine. He'll be back. This isn't that unusual.

ESPN needed to boost their ratings for the Alamo Bowl, so they brought up the allegations again, and went off on how Tressel and Geiger will be fired.

Tressel and Geiger weren't involved in the problems. Truly, there aren't that many problems, and if you were the NCAA, who would you believe, a notorious liar like Clarett, or the classy leaders of a mostly upstanding program like OSU?
