Troy Smith recently read a book about the history of black quarterbacks in pro football.

Niners quarterback Troy Smith recently put down a book, but only because he'd run out of pages to read. It was "Third and a Mile," a book about the "trials and triumphs of the black quarterback."

If author William C. Rhoden decides to write a sequel, Smith just helped write a new chapter for him.

The 49ers-Buccaneers game last Sunday is believed to have been the first in NFL history featuring two black head coaches - Mike Singletary of the 49ers and Raheem Morris of the Bucs - with two black starting quarterbacks - Smith and Josh Freeman.

As for Smith, he's the first black quarterback to start for the 49ers.

"Really?" Smith asked when told about his place in NFL and 49ers history.

Big game for Troy tonight. The 9ers are still theoretically in the race for the division and he plays well they will probably win. If he plays poorly and the 9ers lose I think Singletary will go back to Alex Smith and Troy could get caught up in the NFL wash again.

If the 49ers lose tonight I don't know if Sing will be around to decide who starts at QB for the next one. Troy is probably playing for two jobs tonight, not just one.

I would have never known it was on but the common man and torg are trashing Troy Smith yet again. :shake:

I'll be watching and I hope he plays better tonight.

Terrible pass protection up front - open the play calling a tad fellas; Troy's already gotten one to Crabtree, calling all these draws on 3rd and short/long won't get you anywhere.


The bomb to Beanie was badass though. He's still got quicks.
