QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

The year Troy was going to start for the Ravens until he came down with the rare tonsilitis, he had a very mediocre camp. But he performed very well in pre-season games.

Last year, again very average in practice, but had very impressive pre-season games. I'm not sure you can just paint a broad brush like in terms of players. Some guys just aren't going to "wow" anybody in practice. Guys like Jeff Garcia, Jake Delhomme, Steve Young were all known as "gamers". Guys who played best when the bright lights were on. Jeff Garcia and Steve Young are going to have a hard time dropping jaws while throwing 15 yard outs against air, and being forced to stay in the pocket during team scrimmages.

If Troy cannot win the starting position in practice, he should not and will not be a starter in the NFL. It's going to be expected anywhere he goes.

Stop me when you've heard this before....it's preseason, and Baltimore's 2nd and 3rd stringers make it impossible for Troy Smith to show anything impressive. I don't even know if he can be an NFL QB because every chance I get to watch him he has about 1 second to throw the ball to WRs who will drop it anyways.

I'll say this... as a coach... I hate gamers. You play what you practice. When you're under stress, you default to what you've done over and over. Too many times I've seen my "gamers" not pull it out because they go back to the lazy way they practiced. <soapbox> It's a shame to see some kids with real talent try to get by without working. Pisses me off to no end. </soapbox> I hope that what you say about TS being a gamer isn't true.

Pretty sure you're taking it the wrong way. I doubt Troy slacks off in practice. He just rises to the occasion during games.

Harbaugh: "Troy is a quality quarterback"

Ravens quarterback Troy Smith has had his struggles in his fourth NFL training camp.

He has clearly been the third-best quarterback in camp (behind Joe Flacco and Marc Bulger), forcing passes and throwing interceptions especially earlier this month. But coach John Harbaugh said he has seen a progression from the former Heisman Trophy winner.

"I think Troy has had a really good camp," Harbaugh said. "He continues to improve, and Troy is a quality quarterback. We've said it over and over again, and he's done well."

T.Smith posts his best performance of the preseason
Story posted 2010.08.29

It wasn't his longest stint this preseason, but Troy Smith made the most of his playing time in Saturday night's 24-10 win against the New York Giants at M&T Bank Stadium. The reserve quarterback registered preseason highs in completions (8), attempts (11), yards (71) and passer rating (119.9). Smith capped his outing with an 11-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Marcus Smith with 12:55 left in the fourth quarter.

"The guys up front worked hard, Marcus Smith made a great play on the pass, and he got into the end zone," Smith said. Smith said he recognized that the Giants had not veered away from playing man-to-man defense in the second half, leaving Marcus Smith alone on the outside. "Pre-snap, you've got to read things out depending on what they do coverage-wise," Troy Smith said. "Sometimes you just want to go away from the problems. It just so happened that route was something that was away from one of the problems on the field, and Marcus made a great play."

It's unclear whether there will be room on the 53-man active roster for three quarterbacks, but Smith said he appreciated getting the opportunity play for a lengthy period. "It felt good," he said. "I think early on in the preseason, my guys up front were just feeling themselves out. We go as they go all the time, and they're hunkering down and learning this offense and becoming something special. As far as they go, we'll go."

Troy Smith not dwelling on the past
Ravens reserve quarterback focused on winning a roster spot
Aaron Wilson
September 01, 2010

OWINGS MILLS, Md. ? Stricken by a severe viral infection two years ago, Troy Smith experienced an illness that caused him to lose more than his tonsils and a lot of weight.

Heading into that preseason game against the St. Louis Rams, the Baltimore Ravens? reserve quarterback was on the cusp of possibly winning the starting job at the time.

Instead, it marked the launch of the Joe Flacco era in Baltimore as he played the entire game and assured the coaching staff that he was capable of immediately being under center as a rookie.

Fast forward to today as the Ravens (3-0) prepare for Thursday night?s preseason finale against the Rams and Smith has no interest in reminiscing about what could have been.

The former Heisman Trophy winner is too busy, in his words, fighting for a roster spot to dwell on the past.

?A whole different situation, new team and just a good feel all around,? said Smith, who dealt with blood clots that moved from his throat to his lungs back in 2008. ?I?m good. I didn?t get a chance to be a part of that, what happened back then. And things happen for a reason. Now, it?s a whole new year, a whole different mindset and we?re just moving forward.?

Smith is expected to either start or play extensively against the Rams this time, perhaps even the entire four quarters.

Flacco will definitely be rested, and the Ravens may not want to risk backup Marc Bulger in a meaningless preseason game.

The Ravens have the option of going with two quarterbacks on the active roster, but are considered unlikely to subtract Smith from the equation. Ravens coach John Harbaugh has carried three quarterbacks on the regular-season roster in each of his first two seasons.

As far as Smith is concerned, he?s battling to prove he still belongs.

?Since I?ve been here, I?ve fought every year and I?ve said that time and time again,? Smith said. ?That?s the nature of the beast. At this level, it?s about competing. Not everybody that you slap fives with is going to be your teammate. You have that understanding.

?You can go back to my college days. Every single guy that was on the team had a roster spot. We had 112 guys on our team at Ohio State, so that?s something totally different than what they?re trying to make compared to me.?

In three preseason games, Smith has completed 16 of 25 passes for 151 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions for a 93.9 passer rating.

He has also rushed for 41 yards on 14 carries, scoring one touchdown.

?I think it?s going pretty well,? Smith said. ?I think continuously it?s about being on the incline and doing good, positive things. As a quarterback, your learning curve is always constantly going and I totally believe in that.

Will Thursday be Troy Smith's Ravens farewell?

Ravens quarterback Troy Smith should again see a significant amount of snaps in Thursday's preseason finale against the Rams. It will serve as an audition for the fourth-year quarterback, who will be looking to impress other teams should he not make it through Saturday's final roster cuts.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh kept three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster in his first two seasons. But the Ravens now have two proven and competent passers in Joe Flacco and Marc Bulger, and may opt to use Smith's roster spot to hang onto an extra defensive lineman or a sixth wide receiver.

"The thing we have to decide across the board is, 'Who are the best 53 players we have?'" Harbaugh told the team's website. "Troy is our third quarterback. Obviously, he's played very well in the preseason. He makes plays. He does bring a unique ability. He gets out of trouble and makes plays with his feet and his arm. We?ve always liked Troy. He?s a good player."

Source: Troy Smith expected to start and play entire game

Third-string quarterback Troy Smith will have a chance to prove he deserves a spot on the Ravens' roster Thursday night.

Smith is scheduled to start and play the entire preseason finale, a league source said. This would follow the same script as last season, when the Ravens allowed reserve quarterback John Beck to play all four quarters in the final preseason game.

This would be the most extended playing time since Smith started two games as a rookie in 2007.

Smith is the most high-profile player on the Ravens' roster bubble.

Some observers believe he is safe because his athleticism and knowledge of the system are assets. Others think Smith has to convince the Ravens to give him a roster spot over the likes of linebacker Jason Phillips, wide receiver David Reed or nose tackle Brandon McKinney. And there?s another group that wonders if the Ravens are trying to showcase Smith in order to entice a trade.

By playing Smith for the entire game, the Ravens will sit starter Joe Flacco and backup Marc Bulger. It marked Bulger's first game back to St. Louis, where he was a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback before the Rams released him this offseason.

Man it would be fun to see Troy get a chance in that Cardinals offense. Tossing it to Fitzgerald, or handing it to Beanie. I don't know that there would be interest or not from the Cards, but does anyone really think Troy is not at least on the same level if not higher than Derek intAnderson?
