QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Troy Smith tells Pryor: Run more
Thursday, October 29, 2009
By Ken Gordon
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Troy Smith, who won a Heisman Trophy as a pocket passer at Ohio State, might have played a role in persuading Terrelle Pryor to resume running more often.

Smith, now with the Baltimore Ravens, said he talked to Pryor earlier this season, when Pryor appeared to be trying to emulate Smith's 2006 senior season but was struggling.

"I told him there were certain things he had to get back to, when you were that athletic guy making plays," Smith said. "I told him he had to get back to that mentality."

That seems ironic, considering Smith worked hard to evolve from a scrambler to a pocket passer.

"I told him that stuff (the passing) would come, he just needed to go back to being the player he is," Smith said. "From my vantage point, the sky is the limit with him. He has a chance to be a hundred times better than I ever was there."

Smith said he exchanges occasional text messages with Pryor, and the two talk by phone every few weeks.

Why no Suggs Package?

The Ravens have never run any version of the Wildcat formation that has become trendy around the NFL the past two years, but the recent struggles inside the red zone have led to some fans wondering: Whatever happened to the "Suggs Package," where the offense took advantage of the strong arm and athleticism of backup quarterback Troy Smith?

The formation - which was playfully dubbed the "Suggs Package" last year by offensive coordinator Cam Cameron after linebacker Terrell Suggs caused a minor stir by saying that Smith should be playing more often - was tremendously effective for the Ravens last year. Smith, a star at Ohio State and the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner, ran the option with Ray Rice for a 21-yard gain in a 27-10 win over the Oakland Raiders, and completed a 43-yard pass to Flacco as well out of the formation last year.

But Ravens coach John Harbaugh said he wasn't going to discuss why the offense hasn't used it this year.

"I get asked that all the time as far as the 'Suggs Package,' " Harbaugh said. "We do what we think we need to do, and what's best, week to week. I don't want to get into any reasoning for it. We have our reasons for what we do every week. We try to do the best we can to try and score as many points as we can. Some games we've done better than [other] games. That's a part of who we are, it's in the mix, but if I get into it, it's kind of tactical."

Harbaugh wasn't defensive about the question. In fact, he smiled and then laughed at the silence that followed his answer.

"I know that's a cop-out. Am I ducking the question? Yeah," he said. "I understand that. But I just don't want to talk about it."

Flacco said the idea of using the formation had not come up recently.

"I haven't even thought about it, to tell you the truth," Flacco said. "We're out there trying to do what we can to try and be successful. At times we've been more successful than others. I don't think any of us really blink an eye about what we have and what we haven't done."

You would think at 5-5 and the lack of offensive progression through out the season they would think of anyway to utilize every player on their team. Honestly, with the way Flacco performed last year against Pittsburgh this week would be an opportune time to use Smith's ability.

The end all be all of it is, I hope Smith finds a new home soon.

Flacco stunk the joint up on MNF - 25 passer rating? One would have to think Troy gets an opportunity with another showing like that from Flacco.

The Ravens have committed to Flacco. I dont think they'll play Smith at all this season unless Flacco gets hurt. They dont want to lose him.

I said it last year and I've kept saying it this year. Flacco thrives against the lesser teams but really struggles against the good teams. Seriously go back last year and look at his season Highs they all are directly relative to who they played.

Now i'm not saying Troy is a better option but what I WILL say is that he can't do much worse right now and he NEVER got his shot like Flacco got. Flacco was awarded the starting spot because Troy got very sick now I know they got first round money invested in Flacco, but People also thought the Patriots were retarded for sticking with Tom Brady instead of going back to Drew Bledsoe. You just never know in this league who has the intangibles to prep his team up and get the job done. What bugs me the most about this situation is people say "oh but what an arm Flacco has". They do realize Troy when he came out of college won the farthest throw contest (over 70+ yards I believe), arm strength is not a problem for Troy. Obviously neither is his mobility, but what they could use on their offense is a voice, a leader, and THAT is were Troy far and away gets the job done over Flacco.

There's a reason why the team leader (Ray Lewis) wanted to see Troy be the starter at the beginning of last year. It's because he stated he was impressed with the type of command Troy demands in the huddle, and the leadership he provides.

In saying all that.... Give him ONE shot. If he messes it up then fine, but atleast give him that shot. If I rmember right Troy did beat the Steelers his ROOKIE year in one of his only two starts.
