QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

huh? I want what you are smoking. This QB class is mediocre/weak at best. I don't think you'll hear one draft prognosticator say they think this QB class is better than last years.

Brohm struggled mightily this year, Woodson is an unknown, Brennan has tons of questions, and then who?

Regarding Troy, how is he going to show them anything at all, if he doesn't get any PT. So far, Billick has stated Kyle will get all of the snaps.

I'm just confused as to why the Ravens would draft a QB with what Troy has shown them so far. His arm strength and accuracy is far superior to anything I've seen from any of those three. He goes through his progressions better than anyone I've seen at the college level in a long time. He's mobile but uses it to create opportunities downfield as Romo and Roethlisberger (sp?) have shown can be so lethal in the NFL. He has the most killer spin move I've ever seen from a QB that keeps him alive in the backfield when 90% of other QBs will be brought down. And when it comes down to it he'll tuck it and show off the wheels that had him returning kickoffs at Ohio State. Not to mention the fact that he'll lower his shoulder and put you on your back if you don't tackle him like you mean it. Other than the fact that he's 4 inches too short, what's wrong with the guy? He had the largest hands of all QBs at the combine last year, so it's not like the bigger ball is gonna present any problems for him. The dude is a proven winner, and the only thing besides his height you can knock him for is that he played with too many first round-caliber wide receivers at OSU. Can you blame the guy for taking advantage of the talent around him?

How is Woodson a Troy Smith wannabe?

I was hoping you were asking that sarcasticly....

now seriously, AW kinda looks like he has Troy's throwing motion.... build (although woodson is taller) they're both solid....strong arm.....and I guess their face masks are similar too...

why what'd you think I meant?

yeah, you're preaching to the choir to me on this one. I think Troy can be a very good pro-QB, he just needs a shot. If Donovan can be successful, I see no reason why Troy can't be that good.

Troy is more mobile than Donovan, has just as strong an arm, and I think he could be the same leader. Troy will make his mark somewhere. If Baltimore wants to let the next Derek Anderson go again, that's their business.

'cause he's black?

I actually think all three of those QB's are great players. I wouldn't criticize Baltimore for picking up another QB if Troy doesn't show them something special these last few games... The QB talent pool is overflowing in this year's draft.... If I were Cleveland or Oakland I'd certainly be kicking myself, I think we'll see quarterbacks drafted in the second round this year with more talent than Russell or Quinn.

ummm overflowing?

Brian Brohm is Brad Johnson's clone, Matt Ryan looks a LOT like combination of Chad Hutchinson and Drew Henson and Andre Woodson is Chris Leak without the stigma against him.

What is there to be optimistic about? This QB class is weak even compared to last year's class.

Woodson is a pocket QB, whereas Troy likes to get out of the pocket and make plays. I don't think they are very similar in style at all.

I was just asking cause I don't really see the comparison. I think Woodson isn't very mobile, is taller and more slender, and sometimes he has a tendency to float the ball in situations where he should be putting a little more zip on it. He also showed a tendency to get rattled under pressure later in the season. I know UK fell off the map a little after the LSU game but the other games I watched this year (USC, Tenn) Woodson made bad decisions/throws at critical junctures of the game that really hurt his team's chances, not something you really saw Troy do.

I must sadly inform you all that Billick's ego will not let him start Troy this year. That would send a sign that Boller might not be the answer, something he cannot come to grips with. I've had to endure this for 5 years. Boller is Billick's guy and unless a veteran QB with proven skills were to come along (see Mcnair circa 2006) hes sticking with him. Regardless of the mistakes, Boller is Billick's guy to the end. I firmly believe that if he starts Boller next year the team will be down yet again and the only thing that will stop him from starting him the year after (trust me, hes getting resigned) is Billick's firing. Boller will be give 2nd, 3rd, 26th chances as long as Billick is there.

This makes me sick.

I agree. Smith and Woodson might have some similarities, but those similarities don't mean they're similar QBs. They play the position completely different.

People are high on this year's QB class because of the tools that the QBs have. They have a lot of potential. I think the class is better than this thread is making it sound, but I don't consider it anything amazing. Troy deserves a shot before anyone in the class, that's for sure. He's also a running threat, unlike the top QBs in this class. The Ravens could use a playmaker at the position.

Again, benching Boller is admitting they made a mistake giving him an extension earlier this year. They will give Kyle every opportunity to prove them right, rather than benching him and admitting they were wrong.

Just the way the NFL and many professional sports work.

I've said the same thing about 5 different times.

if you watched Derek Anderson play when he was with Baltimore you would have let him go too.

I can't remeber watching him play while at Baltimore, but Savage certainly jumped at signing him when he went on waivers. He certainly saw something. Sometimes it's just recognizing the talent is their, rather than expecting it to produce immediately.

Yeah, but as far as recognizing young talent there hasn't been an organization with a better track record than the ravens in recent years. Granted that hasn't always been the case with QB's but I think if he saw anything Ozzie Newsome would have kept him around. I just think Anderson has worked hard these past two years with the browns and has found an offensive system that fits him.

Maybe Savage played a huge role in recogzizing that talent for Newsome? I don't think Savage would have let Anderson go on waivers had he been with Baltimore when it happened.

its possible, but Ozzie has done a fine job by himself (mostly on the defensive side). I really don't think the Ravens had much choice other than to waive Anderson, seeing as he was going to be behind McNair (the annointed starter) and Boller (Billick's Golden Boy). Teams don't often hold on to the same 3rd string QB for that long unless hes a project player (which Anderson never was for the Ravens. He was only there to be an emergency guy).

Thedecline, your sig makes me want to cry in a corner. Seeing my all-time favorite Buckeye in a Baltimore Ravens uniform just rips out my heart. I wonder if Troy throws up just a little every time he has to put on that uniform.
