QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I have to agree with you on that one. For sure you also have to look at what was working for us.... We were running the ball well. Last week he let Smith throw the ball alot, but this week we were running the ball well so we'll see next week. I don't see why you can't trust him??? He gets the ball there in a hurry and he hasn't screwed up yet so why not? I'm tired of tressel putting limits on people. How are we ever suppose to know how good they are not only us fans but the coaches as well? If we just assume that Troy won't do the right then how will we ever know if he hasn't thrown an INT yet? Don't forget that this Defense was #2 in the Big ten now!! This defense was tough and he did very well. I say you have to start troy next week though. Seriously if they don't tressel has serious problems with Loyalty, and recognition of whats working for him

adding on to this is that I just feel comfortable when smith's in the game. I dont' feel comfortable however when our running backs are running with the ball. GREAT WIN and GO BUCKS!!

Buckeye513- GO BO SOX!!!! and yes you see the same thing I see. He makes better decisions to go along with more offense. Is that not what Jim Tressel wants?
Yeah. On that 3rd down play, Smith scrambled out of the pocket, waited for the LB to step up, and hit a wide open Ginn for a 1st down. It impressed me that he only used his feet when he absolutely needed to, unlike most other mobile QB's.

Postgame interviews confirmed that Zwick could not have played today.

Just fine by me. Though he's not perfect, Troy Smith gives us a much better chance to win with this team. He does not get flustered, and he seems to be a more charismatic leader.

llyodsev I agree that if you're not throwing passes its not good indicator. However what if anything have you seen Zwick do that would keep the coaches from putting him in when he gets back? I'm curious because I was a huge Zwick/Smith fan in the beginning (didn't care who started). I'd think Smith should be at QB for the rest the year, and especially with how he's playing of late. Right now I will say that I don't see one thing Zwick does better? With his limitations of throws I'm impressed with his accuracy and zip. The thing I'm most impressed with is his ability to keep things alive and look down field when he's scrambling.

Buckeye513 me and you are on the same page my man.

I'm excited when he goes back to pass because I know at worst we'll get maybe 3-4 yards because he won't take anything less because if he doesn't see something he'll jet and pick up what he can. I thought Troy was an animal at breaking tackles today! I'm impressed with his strenght running the ball.

I'm not a Smith fan for one but I was wondering what everyones opinions are on why this offense is starting to show life with Smith? Max said it right I for one think the guys rally around this guy and thats important, and something you just can't teach.

It is quite apparent that Smith can keep drives alive with his feet where Zwick would never be able to do so. There have been 3-5 3rd and long plays where he has scrambled, and hit defenders 5 yards from the first down and juked around them and passed the first down marker only to have a holding penalty negate it.

Also, Smith has brought a fire and a winning spirit to this team. Even tho Zwick faced tougher opponents and Smith has had less of a challenge, everyone in the huddle knows that if the defense shuts down every passing option they still have a shot of making a big play with Smith's feet. JT has to know that the entire buckeye team would naturally become pessimistic if Zwick came back.

This is not to fault Zwick, but rather the O-line. If our O-Line got penetration like UM, Pittman and Hall would be pushing each other for who would get the 100 yards against every team but Iowa this year (maybe even them).

I agree buckeyscum...... I mean this team just seems to gather around Smith. They believe if someone screws up that smith can pick up the slack (which so far he's done). Smith has indeed faced less talented teams however Penn State is better than Iowa's defense, and only second to Wisconsins Defense! We all remember how poorly we played on offense against Wisconsin as opposed to this week. I say give Smith the rest of the year especially with an injury to Zwick. For one switching our Qb's would just be bad for chemistry and two Smith has yet to screw up and being very productive.

Smith didn't pass the ball just 8 times because Tressel doesn't trust him...did you see him throwing bombs in the Indiana game over and over? They obviously trust him. The reason he only threw 8 times was in a blink of an eye Ohio State was up 14-0 and only had run 3 offensive plays. So why pass? No reason to pass...Penn State can't score 14 points in a game to save their life unless you turn the ball over...so run the ball...move the clock, and don't turn the ball over. I thought it was brilliant. Tressel looked at a 14-0 lead and said...unless we hand them the game, we are gonna win. I am sure if we are up 14-0 next week...the playcalling will be different. Penn State's secondary is the strength of the team...why play to the strength. Let them have the ball...they suck with it. Great job Tressel...you played to win. They gave us 14 early points and we controlled the rest of the game. I think the young players are starting to respond well to Tresselball...i'm excited for this 3 game stretch.

We don't give a damn for the whole state of michigan...we're from O-HI-O

How many 5 star WRs are going to want to come play for a team that chucks the ball around the yard 8 times in a game?

Call it Tressel's playcalling if you want, but think big picture.

Let's see next week when we have to put up over 30 points just to win the game.

In the situation we're in right now, without much time in the pocket for Zwick to work with Smith is the guy. Mobility is the bonus factor, but Zwick is our passing-QB in Tressel's eyes. Get as mad as you want about Zwick's apparent imperfections but not too many pocket QBs are perfect out of the gate with little to no support from the run-game.

go ahead let me have it now...

Jonathan, BuckIpower, and Buckeyefrom scum nice posts. I agree with your collective thoughts. I think we had control of the game and Tressel wasn't gonna gamble.

I think Tressel wanted to get the younger O-linemen some reps against a great defense. I noticed Rhearing and some other youngsters were in their getting reps.

Slickman! haha I'm not go'n to hammer you but I dissagree about the running game. Right now our running game has been somewhat effect as of the last 2 games. You have to realize smith is doing better stuff with the same talent Zwick did. I agree with you unfortunatly with the fact that the staff feels like Zwick is the passing QB. The thing is with our Lines performance you have to have a QB that can make it happen with his feet IF he needs to... and Smith made it happen when it broke down and thats what I think he does much better than Zwick to go along with he doesn't screw up.

Exactly my thoughts. I am a Smith fan and think Zwick still has to prove himself, but there has been no running game to balance out the attack for Zwick, whereas Smith has had that luxury both weeks (moreso against indiana).

When I said that Zwick faced tougher teams, I meant all around. Clearly Smith did well against a really good defense, but he did not have to do as much due to the junior varsity offense on the field for PSU.

Smith has to get the start all year long unless Zwick is 100% and the O-line can establish itself foremost as the main threat and the passing game is the second thing to worry about.

I thought Troy Smith today played lights out.

I'm not a Smith fan for one but I was wondering what everyones opinions are on why this offense is starting to show life with Smith?

What game did I miss? A three game losing streak due largely to a completely ineffective offense. Four years in the bottom half of the Big Ten in total offense. Have we been so conditioned that we now call a game in which we have 59 yards passing and 202 yards total offense something to get excited about?

Come on folks. Let's raise those expectations. This was PSUs FIFTH STRAIGHT BIG TEN LOSS. Their 12th in the last 13 Big Ten games. And it was at our house. We lose to Purdue, MSU or Michigan with the game we played today.
