He doesn't suck but he's never going to be an elite throwing QB... Any kid going to a top D1 school to another as a transfer is really risking it IMO.
....unless their last name is Fields.

I'm talking about his sudden inability to throw. Before he left there was only one instance of weird behavior when confronted with competition for the job... at least as far as i knew.
Apparently he was close to transferring before 18 too ?
Now it's a pattern.
I think he's got plenty of talent. He'll never be a pro style NFL QB like Peyton Manning... but we knew same of Troy, Pryor, Brax and they all turned out great for college game.
Is he gonna step up to the plate and defy the pattern... or confirm the pattern? That's how i see it at this point.
I hope the Martell family is more in the Apple/Bosa/Elliott mold and less in the Grandstaff mold.
That's important, too.
Love it. Gotta say, however, the folks on this forum would savage any high school kid committed to UM who talked smack about the Buckeyes. A certain wristband-loving tight end comes to mind...

I'm not going to criticize this kid. I hope he becomes a great Buckeye. But for football and non-football reasons, I don't think he will ever take a meaningful snap at Ohio State as a QB. If I'm wrong, then ridicule me 2-5 years from now. But right now, that's what I think.
I've had that thought as well. It is in no way a knock on Tate. I think after this season, the job is Burrow's or Haskins'. Then, I think Emory Jones comes in with a year under his belt on the team. It has more to do with how highly I think of Emory than me thinking less of Tate. In the end, what I think doesn't matter. Tate can force his way on to the field. He is more than capable. It wouldn't shock me one bit.
Three straight high school NCs, Never lost a game. National player of the year, etc. No doubt that this kid is a winner. Would he be successful in a traditional drop-back system at this level? Probably not. That's not where his strength is and it would be stupid to try to force that. Fortunately, we now have a successful OC who has shown that he can change his system to match the talent he has. JTB finishes up with Burrow and Haskins getting time at least through the middle of next season. Tate sits one year and either waits his turn and competes with Jones or blows everyone away and jumps those two. I think he'll get an honest shot and I think it will work out. Sure he's more of a Welker/Edelman than a Brady, but that's waaay down the road.
As it relates to Tate, I understand the concerns voiced for sure. I just think that he will overcome all those concerns and be extremely fun to watch here.
This is my favorite reply post I have ever seen you make. One, great point. Two, I like the number of words. Lol.
Tate is listed at 5'11". I was too in HS. I was actually 5'9 3/4" without shoes and without craning my neck. There's a lot of lying about heights and weights in HS football. But Tate has gone to combines, and because they exist to serve college recruiters, maybe Tate really is 5'11". Regardless, seeing the field at just shy of 5'10" isn't all that different than seeing it at 5'11". I'd guess the average height of defensive linemen is around 6'4" in FBS. It's a problem. I played QB 2 years in HS. We ran the wishbone, but almost everything we did in the passing game was some form of sprint roll out left or right, and my number one option was to run it - which I usually did. I had one pass where I rose up from center to throw a slant to the WR or a banana route to the TE, and the OL basically hit the DL's in the gut on the side of the play to keep their hands down. I wasn't very good and we probably threw 5-10 times a game.
Anyway, shorter QBs have done very well in college in the right system. They haven't done as well in the pros, Brees and a few others aside. I don't care about pro football a lick, but I think it's hard to deny that 6'3-5" isn't ideal when you look at the QBs who were great college and pro players: your Mannings, Marinos, Bradys, Rodgers, etc. A little guy has to make up for the limitations with his height by making plays with his feet, and just being a playmaker in general (ala Manziel).
So, Tate has some things working against him, but he obviously has some high level talent. The question will be are his talent and abilities a good fit with what he will be asked to do at Ohio State and in the context of the competition he will be facing.
I've been watching this series and it's quite interesting watching Tate. A kid that some will think is a cocky douche, but if he was on their team they'd love to have him. I think he's very conf
Doug Flutie is one example. One. And he's extremely famous for it. Tate isn't Drew Brees/Russel Wilson size...he's clearly much shorter. And if you go with what he's listed at you're ignoring years of NFL combines that show the accuracy of college programs. JT is 6'..maybe 6'1" and when Tate stands next to him he's clearly 4-5 inches shorter with much smaller hands and narrower build.
I've got nothing against the guy and would love for him to succeed in our program, but history says it's unlikely.
I'm with you that he is tiny but if you are going to use history of NFL combines as the reason you are doubtful of the kid I think it's faulty logic.
He's had tremendous production at the highest levels of high school football. Urban Meyer has seen him closer than anyone and extended the offer. From what I have seen he has that Aaron Craft thing of being the scrappy little dude that finds a way to win...consistently.
Will he play in the NFL? Highly doubt it based on his size but can he excel in the Urban Meyer college offense? I'd say he's got a pretty solid chance because he can run the read option stuff very well, that is obvious already. Everything else can develop off of that if you can go consistently hurt opponents with the run.
Have no problem with his tweet. Talk that talk kid, I like that he's confident in his brothers.
yea but his team mates are calling him out for the tweet.
Is he not seeing any playing time in an effort to redshirt him?
If Haskins doesn't go Pro, does Tate transfer?
I worry about him finishing the season in all honesty. He was down for awhile with the first big hit that got put on him.
I'm fairly shocked that he has not played much in that role just to keep him happy and Dwayne a little healthier.
We've misplayed this... I hope Tate doesn't transfer after this season because if he does we are in trouble if Dwayne leaves.
Funny how nobody pointed out these deficiencies until after he left the program.
Neither was Tim Tebow.
Yeah. I'm not seeing any reason for animosity towards the kid. The minute Fields became official, he had to make a decision that was best for his football future. Not meant to be a knock on him, but Fields looks to be a much better qb. Sure he could hang around and do the "competition" thing, but that wastes his time. It was Fields' job the minute he signed, despite what the coaches say. Tate now goes somewhere that he's the automatic favorite to win the job and gets spring and fall camp to learn the offense.Funny how nobody pointed out these deficiencies until after he left the program.
