QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Tate Martell Getting Better Every Day for the Buckeyes

When Ohio State quarterback Joe Burrow decided to transfer to LSU this spring, he made a murky position room much clearer.

With Burrow, Dwayne Haskins, and Tate Martell competing for the starting job in the spring, questions arose from every corner. Who is in the lead? Which guy gives you the best chance of winning? What will the offense look like with _____ at quarterback? How do you find snaps for three guys? Is there a danger of a split locker room?

But in an instance, all of hand-wringing went away. With Burrow off to Baton Rouge, Haskins ascended to the unquestioned starting spot and Martell landed as his backup.

This being Ohio State, however, there is still going to be a competition between Haskins and Martell. Their current situation as starter and backup is based on their respective performances in the winter and the spring — and probably a second half in Ann Arbor last November.

Because of his experience, Haskins started out ahead of Martell, and following spring ball that is where he remained. But the three quarterbacks shared reps evenly throughout camp, which allowed them all to make strides.

Following the spring, and seeing the way each of the quarterbacks performed in the spring game, there was no surprise that Martell wasn’t named the starter. Martell only completed 5 of his 16 pass attempts for just 28 yards. He did rush for 69 yards, which was a nice day on the ground, but the lasting memory was of the less-than-stellar passing day.

Ohio State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day doesn’t just look at one performance when making a decision, however. But even when looking at the one performance, he looks at all of the factors involved.

“A lot goes into every play,” Day said following the spring. “You have to look at it objectively. If there is an incomplete pass, either the receiver was covered, or it was a poor throw, or it was a drop, usually. We’ve gone through all of the incompletions and charted all of them to get an idea on that.”

During his breakout session, Meyer also answered questions about Tate Martell and Jeremy Ruckert's playing time this fall, Dante Booker's health, some position battles and more.
  • Though he didn't go into specifics, Meyer said they will find a way to get Tate Martell on the field if he is one of the best players in Ohio State's offense.

OHIO STATE PLANS TO PLAY BACKUP QUARTERBACK TATE MARTELL, BUT NOT IN SPECIAL PACKAGES RIGHT NOW

95850_h.jpg

Ohio State is planning to play backup quarterback Tate Martell, but it might not be with the first-team offense, at least not yet.

Speaking on The Urban Meyer Show (without Urban Meyer) on 97.1 The Fan on Thursday, Ohio State interim head coach Ryan Day said "the plan is to get him on the field and play," but that the Buckeyes have not installed any special packages for Martell yet.

"He’s had a nice preseason," Day said. "He brings a different skill set to the table. Really dynamic with his feet, but he’s also improved throwing the ball. So we’re not going to put him in right now for packages or things like that. We’re just going to let him go play the offense and let him go."

Listen, I think Haskins is QB1. BUT, you better get ready when Tate comes on the field and makes plays because that is what he does, he makes plays and wins. So it may backfire on us somewhat when we have a QB controversy of sorts if Tate lights it up.

Being a playmaker is great and all, but when it comes to being a QB - the word we should use is 'facilitator'. (FaciliTaTer)

I don't want my QB to consistently tuck and run when he has playmaking options available at the skill positions. That is what they're recruited for. I want a trigger man who can read the defense, make the smart and decisive decision and deliver the ball consistently. Going off of the Spring game alone, that didn't appear to be where Tate was ahead of Haskins. Not to say there hasn't been growth since as I'm sure there has been. But being a playmaker as a QB is secondary to being methodical.

TATE MARTELL SHOWS OFF HIS LEGS WITH A 47-YARD TOUCHDOWN RUN

Tate Martell already showed off his arm with a bomb to Terry McLaurin, but then he did it with his legs, breaking a 47-yard touchdown run to put the Buckeyes up 52-3.

Martell went 10-for-10 passing for 121 yards and a touchdown and had eight carries for 95 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Not bad, not bad.

First two games:

Passing: 13 of 14 (92.9%) for 154 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
Rushing: 10 carries for 99 yards, 1 TD

That's with less than a full game's worth of total playing time. The way he bounced back after the personal foul hit on the sidelines shows he's tough as nails. One of the top backup QBs in the entire country...

And a lot of that wasn't with the 1st team offense either.
