QB Rob Schoenhoft (official thread)

However, if you look at our 2002 run pass distribution, it was 67% run. It is still a contention that osu's number of passes per game will be dependent on the success of the running game.

Yeah, but how often do you have a Maurice Clarett that could gain 4-5 yards a pop with 8-9 guys in the box every play? Besides, the main reason why they had so many defenders up close wasn't MoC but rather they knew we wouldn't/couldn't pass consistently. Just think how much yardage MoC could've had if we had a good passing game to keep the defense loose...could've been scary good.

Ask and ye shall recieve (provide the QB throws to you) 2003 season passing stats:

USC 274-442-9 (62%) 3791 yards, 39 TDs (34 pass attempts per game)
OSU 208-366-13 (57%) 2679 yards, 20 TDs (28 pass attempts per game)

They only threw 6 passes per game more.
Yeah, but unfortunately the numbers also show that they had 42% more passing yards, and about twice as many passing TDs (an extra 1.46 passing TDs/game).

Chicks dig the long ball. So do 5* QB recruits. Not all pass attempts are equal from the perspective of the potential QB.

Now, if Zwick/Smith (whoever starts) turns out to have a bigger and more accurate arm than Krenzel, maybe JT will throw downfield more. However, those 2003 stats show that we were much more in a short passing possession game...and I think a lot of these HS QBs want to air it out deep.

Ask Bret how huge a difference that is. Sears figured out scUM passed the ball 7 more times a game than we did. That's over 70 passes a year for Pete's sake. :shake:

We pass it plenty. Start completing more passes and everyone will be happy, including the group who thinks we're too conservative.

My guess is if Tressel ever has a Carson Palmer or Matt Leinart throwing passes for him, he'll throw the ball more.

Hey, Craig Krenzel was a great QB and one of the great winners in OSU history. But he was not the kind of guy that you want throwing 35 passes a game. Also, how many times did Craig hold the ball too long or take off running on a called pass play? I bet that comes close to accounting for the 6 passes per game that USC has on OSU.

The bottom line is USC has had better players on offense the last couple years. But people seem to forget how horrible USC's offense was when they got beat 10-6 by Utah in the 2001 Las Vegas Bowl, just a year before pounding Iowa in the Orange Bowl.

Things can turn around pretty quickly in college football.

I'm actually pretty excited about Schoenhoft (although I admit that I wasn't quite sold on him at first). Sanchez is obviously a more polished player right now, but Rob has a lot more size and arm strength. OSU doesn't need a QB to play right away, so if Rob signs with the Bucks, red shirts in '05 and backs up in '06, he could have two years to learn the game at the college level and still be a three-year starter. Rob could really develop quite a bit in the next three years, and maybe even be better than Sanchez some day.

I'll be interested to see how he does this year at St.X.

Figures lie, liars figure. Old adage applies here.

OSU is a run first offense. RUN, RUN, Pass, punt. Don't care how many passes they throw a game, they will try to run first, and will resort to the pass as required.

USC throws until they have 300+ yards, 3 or 4 TD, and 35 or 40 points. They will then run to eat some clock.

There is a difference.

It's just like us bragging about having 14 guys drafted. That is awesome. But, how many are going to make a team. Different story. Lot's of bitching why we could send four lineman to the league, yet not be able to run last year. I think Stepanovich will make a roster, but Clarke, Bishop and Olivea are doubtful.

So we should all be careful when we get to hung up on statistics.

Another perfect example is Schoenhoft's completion percentage last year. That must not be as important as his critics make it out to be when he is an Elite 11 invitee with offers from several great schools.

I remember when we threw on five of our first six plays in the opener against Washington last year. Didn't Krenzel throw a pick against SDSU on our very first play from scrimmage? And if I remember correctly we opened up the 2004 Fiesta Bowl airing it out quite a bit. Keep in mind that Tressel, although conservative by nature, is a former quarterback. If he thinks we can pass, we will.

Sears link tries to take you to the article which is blocked if you are not premium. But on the "Insiders" board they have a thread titled "Schoenhoft to the Buckeyes" started by Duane. That is good enough for me.

Welcome aboard Rob!

IMO we are one LB and one RB away from a great class.
