QB Rob Schoenhoft (official thread)

Dispatch

Though Schoenhoft's switch was labeled temporary, receiver Brian Hartline said, "It's going to be as permanent as he wants it to be, obviously. But I've already said to a couple of people, 'He could turn into a great tight end. You heard it first from me.'
"The dude can move. I've seen the dude play basketball -- he can move. He's got great hands."

He was a major force in the post in St. X's '05 run to the state title game. Ironically, you could argue he was a better basketball player than football player his senior year. (If nothing else, he played better in the playoffs in basketball than in football. He had at least one game winning shot that comes to mind.)

In another thread, people are already talking about whether the plan is to get Henton some reps in the Championship Game.

Obviously, you don't have your back-up QB take reps at another position with a championship game looming unless the guy "behind him" is ready to take over the back-up role.

That having been said, this may be as much about Tight End as it is about QB. There are two possible ways this could be about Tight End...
  1. We needed someone to give us a look on Scout Team that we weren't getting
  2. Robbie isn't really on the Scout Team
There is no doubt in my mind that number 1 is a possibility, but Tressel's past Big-Game-Surprises make #2 at least a long-shot, if not down right likely.

  • Tressel has used non-starters in new ways and in new positions in big-games in the past
  • He often does this to exploit an enemy weakness
  • LSU has under-performed the DSA "prediction" for their game 8 times this year
  • In 7 of those 8 games, an opposing tight end caught more passes for more yards than their season average. The exception to the rule was caused single-handedly by Tim Tebow.
  • LSU has out-performed the DSA "prediction" for their game 5 times this year
  • In 3 of those 5 games, no opposing tight end out-performed his season average. The other 2 of those 5 games were blow-outs where the extra catches and yards came in garbage time.
As with so many teams, the statistics seem to indicate that a big, athletic tight end with good hands is the Tiger's Achilles Heel. This isn't what I would necessarily expect with a team that has a safety like Steltz, but that's what the numbers say. Maybe there is a weakness there... well, not a weakness, but a chink in the armor. Maybe there is something to exploit. Chances are, if I found it in my spreadsheets, JT found it in the film room.

What if Tressel wants to use TWO big, athletic tight ends on January 7th (Nicol and Schoenhoft)?

What if we see a Jumbo package that we pass out of... a lot... with success... and then see what Beanie can do?

What if we just rotate the tight ends to keep Steltz running all night long?

What if Tressel does what he always does; which is to say, what if he does something that I haven't imagined... and it works?

What if there's nothing to this, but Bo Pelini decides to prepare as if there was something to it?

Is it January yet?

Steltz is a big hitter and somewhat of a ball hawk, but isn't a great man coverage guy.

That indeed would be exciting. If our TEs have a good game catching the ball like we are proposing, I would think that would open up the offense to be able to be really balanced by not needing to run obvious passing formations to move the ball through the air.

I'm sure that Robbie is very athletic and could probably make a good tight end some day. But he's not been hit in the middle after making a catch. I don't think JT would throw him into that kind of a situation when he's never done it at the college level in a real game. (Not this game anyway) That would be asking a lot of any one.

Interesting theory, but I just don't think it'll happen in a tight game. Now maybe if we're blowing them out...

Will Robbie be happy playing tight end permanently?

I have no doubt that Robbie would be awesome at TE. The question is whether he will be happy making that permanent move. I am worried that he may consider transferring to another program where he would get a chance at playing QB.

If you are a quality talented player at any sport then you are really gifted. You have to feel that within yourself that you will do what the coaches ask of you. If he feels that he wants to just play QB and no other position then there is a mark of selfishness right there.
So if he would transfer then don't worry about it. Ohio State is loaded with great athletic minds. Thats why the coaches have to make that decision to put the best player at the postion that suits the purpose.

With Double R headed for Tsun and Zook already at Illinois you can see that Jim Tressel is already underway in dressing down the offense and re-tooling
it for his type of "Spread Offense". I don't think he is preparing anything like this against LSU already but who knows - You never know I guess. It should be interesting to watch all this unfold in a couple of weeks from now.

I don't think he's 'changing' offense to more of a spread. Coach is great at (what you called it) re-tooling to take advantage of our players. I dont think the coaching staff gets enough credit.
After all, I do remember Troy running a 'self play-action' fake last yr ala Tebow this yr.
