Disagree, and I refuse to discount the quality of the line or the backs. I'm so tired of people blaming the line on Smith's shortcomings. They generate enough time for a competent D-1 QB to find our quality receivers downfield. Unfortunately, he is not a competent QB. The only reason he shouldn't be fourth on the depth chart is that we don't know what RS can do.

The offensive line problems only highlight Smith's shortcomings. Smith is not a good QB.

hmm? I guess the pressure put on Peyton by NE the last few years (and the resulting errant throws) has shown he's not a good QB either, right?

troy has his faults, but that statement doesn't make much sense to me.

Apples to oranges. Peyton has proven he has the ability to run an offense and has pocket presence. Smith has proven an ability to take off run for two to three yards instead of progressing through his reads.

If anything, OL problems would highlight smiths strengths at QB. If he runs first, then a bad OL would showcase his strengths.

And for the most part the offensive line play does highlight his ability to scramble. But when faced with a fast defense his ability to scramble becomes a liability because he is too quick to pull the ball down and run rather than allowing the play time to develop. I have yet to see him step up in the pocket to avoid the rush and deliver the football.

1) most of his scrambles go for plenty of yards (it's the lack of passing yardage on other plays that hurts us)
2) he should have run a lot sooner today. he was working too hard to not do that.

you still haven't addressed my last post on the last page... where you claimed we were stacking the skill positions and forgetting about lineman (despite having virtually no success recruiting RBs until 2004, and having no TE after Hamby that is trustworthy).

Due to work, I watched only part of the 1st half, but from what I saw, he waited in the pocket for several seconds each time. I am not arguing wether TS or JZ should be starting, I am only saying that JT has forgotten more about college football than most of us could ever hope to learn. In all honesty, I doubt he would keep someone in the game whom he thought could not get the job done.

Cicero, enough bashing something you know nothing about. BTW, skill positions include QB's and RB's, two positions we don't have any stars. I love pittman, but he's hardly a clarett, and who's after him? We don't have a single decent TE after Hamby either. So your made up line about stacking skill players is just plain false.

We have plenty of talent on the line. In 2002 & 2003, people said we had no talent on the line. Those talents go and play in the NFL. You still think its a lack of talent?

I happen to know quite a bit about football. I know enough to tell you that football games are won and lost in the trenches. We are not getting it done in the trenches against good defenses.
We have a potential star in Zwick (who's talent will probably be wasted because our lack of talent on the offensive line forces us to go with Mr. I wanna be a mini-Vick), Pittman has the ability to be a very good running back and we have great athletes at the recieving position. We have a lot of talent at the skill positions.
How many offensive lineman from last year or even the year before are starting in the NFL right now?

Where am I bashing anyone? Posting an honest assessement about a weak area on our team is not bashing. Honest criticism of an aspect of our team does not constitute bashing. The day I come here and spout off about how Tressel sucks and start insulting our team you may label me as a basher. I am as entitled to my opinions as you are.

I'm not sure of the exact number, but I do know that I read a lot of O-line bashing over the prior THREE seasons, yet plenty of guys from 2002-2004 are in the NFL right now.

Ask again in a couple years how many guys from the 2005 team are in the NFL. I'll bet it won't be zero.

Tressel keeps Smith in because he gives us the best chance to win. His scrambling ability can offset the lack of protection provided by our offensive line. If we had a better front four on offense Zwick would give us the best chance to win, but unfortunately that is not the case. So we run the spread offense to make up for the lack of talent up front and Smith is better suited to that type of offense than a classic drop back passer like Zwick. Until we get back to playing smash-mouthed Ohio State football we have to use a less talented but faster quarter back.

Plenty of guys from the team are in the NFL, but few if any of them are starting offensive lineman. The only notable offensive lineman in the pro's I can think of from this team is LeCharles Bentley.

Adrien Clarke, OG, 2nd in Philadelphia depth chart
Kevin Houser, C starts for New Orleans (as long snapper!)
Shane Olivea, OT, starts for San Diego
Orlando Pace, OT starts for St. Louis, but not from the JT era
Alex Stepanovich, C, starts for Arizona

Of course, more Buckeye linemen from he 2002-2004 squads were drafted, but are not currently listed on rosters.

Good research. I was hoping my Bengals were going to grab Stepanovich in that draft.

How many of those listed above have been recruited by Tressel and start for NFL teams? Stepanovich and Olivea are it. Hardly the "bunch" of players that someone tried to argue above.

I am not saying that Tressel is a bad recruiter or a bad coach. I love the guy. I think we are lucky to have him and would not trade him for any other coach in football. I do hoever believe that this one area needs to be improved upon. If that makes me a basher in the mind of some people so be it. I have supported this team for 2 and a half decades and reserve the right to criticize it when I feel the criticism is warranted.

No, you're not the only one. I completely concur. If you think it's bad here, check out Bucknuts.

"Responds better", "Sparks the team", etc.... That's always the response to Smith's crap play. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

I did not want to come on this site today, but I am a gluton for punishment.
The way PSUs D played last night it would have been worse with anyone else under center.
