QB Realization

We have three QBs sitting on the bench. One of them has no experience, one has minimal experience and the other should be starting right now. Maybe one of them has leadership skills, but we can't find out because JT insists on playing Jacks...Beliss...Smith.

Jackson was during the Cooper era. Belissari was the best QB we had at the time and it was JT's first year. The team responds better to Smith. Zwick, IMO, may be the better QB but you can't make the argument that this team would have a better record with Zwick manning the QB position. Also, TB is to young to be thrown into the fire just yet.

There were people bitching and whining to bring in McMullen over Krenzel just because Krenzel wasn't lighting it up. That goes with the territory, people have their own opinions.

My reason for this thread wasn't to bash any of the current players, coaches or anyone else. I just truly realized how unappreciative people were of Krenzel.

people from this site have spent a day with Justin Zwick and afterwards realized why everyone likes Smith better.

Krenzel wouldn't have done jack if the line broke down 20+ times a day like today.

Too nate, nice post. I totally agree with you, I looked at my 2002 national championship hat after the game and thought to myself, man if we just had those plays that we had that year. The 4-14, Mo call against scUM, Holy Buckeye and on and on.

Still people continued to criticize tressel and call for the backup and didnt understand when Tress went back to Krenzel against scUM in 03'.

Well see heres the skinny on that. Krenzel was beat up against scUM and was shaky at best not to mention we were getting killed. McMullen went in there and mustered a TD drive. Why are we not staying with the hot hand when the other guy is injured? Krenzel brought us a NC and was a great leader. No one will ever question that.

When I played center for Newark High School J.V. in 95 we had a middle school rb who converted to QB his freshman year. He wasn't a great qb, his backup may have been better, but he was the leader of our team. He showed up late to pre-game on sat. We went through walk-through with the 2nd string qb. Although most knew that the 2nd string was the better qb, we had won big games with our starter. When the starter finally showed, there was an excitement not there with the back up. There is an argument to be made for the man that the rest of the team thinks is the leader. Regardless who the coach thinks should play. When the team rallies around a player, the coach must go with it. If not, the "TEAM" will suffer.

Does anyone think that we might not know what goes on in practice? Any chance we have a good defense that could pressure the QBs and see who performs better in those situations?

We clearly don't have a very good OL, so which QB can get it done in that situation? Zwick looked awful last year under pressure. He got somewhat better this year, but still not great on the run.

Part of rallying behind Smith could be b/c they know that Zwick's shortcomings are greater.

This is from 2 yrs. ago so there is no reason to rehash it, but I was just saying that there was a reason why Tress put Krenzel back in.

It is called Leadership.

From watching, I think CK's success stemmed from learning early what he could do, and what he couldn't, and not trying to do too much himself. I don't think Troy grasps that yet, because I think he tries to do too much at certain times, and not enough at others (I don't mean he isn't trying, just that he doesn't step up and make the correct read, runs instead of throwing it away, etc.). He just doesn't seem comfortable out there, whereas CK seemed to be in complete control of himself and the situation. With that comfort in himself comes confidence from others, and with that confidence comes leadership.
