My bad, I figured if you guys felt so strongly about it that you'd argue with/insult each other for this long you'd feel strongly enough about it to consider trying something everyone could do together, something sort of productive. You know, togetherness, unity, democracy, all that jazz?

Yeah since persistently writting letters to a talking head will be "something sort of productive."

Not to mention, the debates and discussions (not arguing and insults) are pretty good around these parts.

Writing letters to Kirk Herbstreit to ask him why he's a douche bag of TV but pretty good on local radio is hardly togetherness, unity, democracy, and all that jazz.

I think I've wandered into the most cynical corner of the web.

Because he's a commentator not a journalist and that's obviously hyperbole. It's an overstatement, but that doesn't make it "uncalled for". That's a normative judgment.

He's an analyst, and ESPN tries very hard to masquerade as experts when they're really just tabloid entertainers. It's not like he blurted it out in the heat of the moment while commenting on another UM implosion or another big game loss by OSU. That was a carefully planned comment at a desk.

It's an overstatement, but that doesn't make it "uncalled for".

You are correct he is allowed to say it, so my quote was probably overstated, but I don't get why he gets the freedom to say stupid things and then the protection from the fallout of said comments.

I take both your points, JDub. My point all along is that I hadn't heard anything that I felt like gives any of us the right to question his Buckeye loyalty. I still haven't. Credibility shattering with/for whom? Saying something sets us back 50 (or 10) years or lauding SEC speed isn't stabbing Tressel & Co. in the back.

But his credibility as an analyst (generally) is different from his credibility as a Buckeye. He can be an espin buffoon (and I think he's much better overall than most) without being tar and feather-able in Columbus.

I don't think he's tar and feather material, but I think he's said enough to warrant disdain from the home school.

I'm not giving him a pass. I just haven't heard/read anything yet that hasn't been at least not incorrect or obvious hyperbole that I don't see as having been triggered by tOSU animus. Given that, I don't think we can/should (yet) question his Buckeye-ness. I don't even think that the difference in substance and tone between his national and local statements is that big of a deal. We all say different things in different ways in different contexts.

At the risk of interjecting religion into this thread (which may not be all that off given how we view tOSU football), I'm Herbstreit agnostic. I don't think I know enough, given his experience with the University, to question his loyalty based upon the evidence that I've seen.

OK. If what he said was that offensive, what is the future as far as you are concerned? To get back in your good graces - if he can - what does he have to do? Is he already sentenced to a lifetime of dislike? Do you want him to apologize first...in any special manner with any specific statement repudiated with his remorseful apology? Can be recover from that without an apology in any way? Does he have to quit talking good about Urban or the SEC? Bad about the Big-10? Not dis Tress' offense or never predict a Buckeye loss in upcoming major games? Quit ESPN?

I get all of this, but moving on from his statements of a few years ago (the statement about recruits not going to tOSU would be my main complaint if I were an alumnus) - what does he have to do to get back in the good graces of those who are clearly pissed at him?
