QB Kirk Herbstreit (Frosted Quips)

Desmond Howard has been doing this same gig, albeit with a much lower profile, as Herbstreit for awhile now. Dez suffered the Rich Rod era, the Brady Hoke era, the Legends jersey fiasco, and a whole lot more, and I've never once heard him be anything other than supportive of his alma mater and the players.

Seriously. You're putting in work to make Desmond Howard seem like the modest, mature one on air by comparison.

Herbstreit has never lobbed such inflammatory statements towards any other program as routinely as he does the Buckeyes.

Agreed. There's criticism of all programs, which is part of a good analyst's job, and then there's Herbie, who goes out of his way to criticize OSU at a far disproportionate rate vis-a-vis other programs, seemingly in an over-the-top effort to prove he's an unbiased commentator. If that's the path he's chosen, to use his alma mater as a stepping stone for his career, then fine. But I'm not sure why he'd be welcomed back to the WHAC or the program to any extent. Clearly the players themselves are a bit fed up with his antics.

A lot of other ways to say the same thing without being an epic douche.

Quite a few people here at BP have managed to do it.

Yeah, I expect a national tv broadcaster who has as much respect as Herbie to act a little better than your average internet commentator. Whether what he says is accurate or not, there's a way to say what you want to say without sounding like @KHerb420.

Predictably, Herbie said on the rankings show last night that as a non-conference champ, Ohio State is "on the outside looking in" and that the "best case scenario" would be the Rose Bowl. He also suggested the loser of the Big Ten title game could stay above Ohio State.

He's not wrong. Think about how pissed you'd be if you're ranked ahead of a team that is done playing....but now you have to play one more game. Losing that game means you're worse than a team that you would be better than if you didn't have to play that game. That extra game you have to play is against either the best or second best team in the conference, and ranked in the top 5 in the country.

Of course he's wrong. The loser of that game will be ranked below Ohio State on Sunday, I'm quite certain. And so is everybody else (except for you and Herbie, evidently). You and Herbie are confusing what you think "should" happen with what "will" happen.

If Iowa doesn't want to ruin their perfect record I'm sure tOSU would gladly take their spot in the B1G title game. If MSU scUM's them on a last second fluke play they might have an argument, but if MSU trucks them like I expect they deserve to be dropped. Iowa makes UNC's Charmin schedule look hard core.

Sure, sleepy, if you recall, had to keep Ohio State behind Wisconsin in 2010 (his final ballot had Wisconsin 8 and Ohio State 9 (down from 6 - because.. you know.. they beat Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl) because Ohio State lost to Wisconsin in the regular season... of course, sleepy had no issue ranking LSU one spot in front of Alabama despite the Tigers having lost to Bammer.

EDIT: I was mistaken.. it wasn't Bama.. LSU beat Bama.. it was Arkansas that LSU lost to... But, I was right as to the point I was making, LSU was ahead of Arkansas on his final ballot.

Anybody know where Herbie stood on the Bama/Oklahoma St/Stanford debate in 2011? Two were one-loss conference champs. The other didn't win their division. Guess who the Harris Poll overwhelmingly selected to the to the National title game?

This would be quite revealing.

I'm not saying it will happen and I know it won't. But the logic of it makes sense. Here, team A....play one more game. If you don't win, Ohio State is better than you. What does Ohio State have to do? Watch you play.

I totally agree with this premise. It's just wholly inconsistent with what we saw play out in 2011. Everything we're hearing in the media is inconsistent with what happened then. And there were two less teams, which makes it even more hypocritical.

But that's the issue--you see? I know it won't and you say you know it won't. But there was Herbie on national TV last night suggesting that it could happen (not that it should happen, but that it could actually happen--there's a difference between the two, after all)--he said OSU fans should be "hoping" they stay above the loser of the Big Ten title game. Hence my laughing at his point. He's wrong.
