Just like Herbie did. He wasn't a Buckeye 'homer', and at times seems to be anti-Buckeye, but that is because he HAS to project neutrality. And his stage (ESPiN GameDay) is the largest stage of all. The guys at the lower level can joke about 'my guys' at Michigan, USC, Notre Dame, or wherever, but they will NOT make it to the 'show' unless they can project neutrality and professionalism.

Even though Herbie left C'bus, because the Buckeye Nation criticized him for not being more 'pro-Buckeye' he did what he had to for his career. Understood, and I'd be surprised that if in private he doesn't bleed scarlet & gray. The above comments show that these guys are as far up the totem pole as they're going to get. 'Course they're not Buckeye-bred announcers.........like Spielman, R. Smith, Clark Kellogg, etc etc etc.

The one year Tebow didn't play with a good defense backing him up they broke the scoreboards and record books... And lost a lot more games than usual.


Herbie just needs to be reasonable, something he usually is. Most of his infamous potshots had merit, he just chose to use inflammatory, juvenile language to state them.

Why would any offensive coach ever want to play for Tressel, setting the conference back a decade, etc. There are legitimate criticisms to be made but as we enforce around here, how you say it is more important than what you are saying.

Only if the team can make plays in space.

Whether the Buckeyes look good in a uniform will be the clincher.

And since he's been shredded by Buckeye fans for so long, it's become de facto truth - which is silly.

really, I think most osu fans would have little problem with him if he used the same over the top fervor to talk about other major programs that deserve it like he did with osu.

lsu's offense last year was an insult to offensive football, about as bad as the 2003 osu team that he defamed on national TV, but he wouldn't dare speak ill of an SEC school or their grass eating howler monkey of a head coach.

has he ever once made mention of oklahoma and big game bob stoops or ND's constant shitting of the bed in BCS games? nope.

if he would ever speak of any other program in the same manner, most of the people bashing him would probably stop.

Herbstreit wasn't thought well of around the athletic department under Tressel. The Terrelle Pryor "fake Buckeye" rants weren't original thoughts at all....he was relaying the everyday conversations of those within the program.

Herbstreit is what he is...a poor comentator that relies way too heavily on over-used cliches and jargon, while missing 95% of the intricate parts of the game guys like Todd Blackledge nail.

He has also made it is his job to say outlandish things nationally regarding the Buckeyes in an effort to appear objective while doing 180's on local radio to appease his local fan-base. His quote after the loss to LSU about Ohio State setting the Big 10 back to the 1940's on top of comments about not letting his son play for a Tressel offense were just insane and never duplicated or directed at another program.

The last thing I'd state, is never giving a formal aplology to Mike Brewster or Chris Fields for implicating them in tatoo-gate during a live broadcast. Yet, he aplogizes within several days to Matt McGloin over questioning his talent level. The double standard he has treated OSU with in the past is fairly critiqued IMO.

His friendship and loyalty to Urban Meyer will obviously soften his stance and remove some of the over-the-top hyperbole he has been so fond of using over the last 5 years, but I don't think it should cause anyone to change their opinion of him either way. To the "hardcore" OSU fan, you're either going to like him or dislike him. The casual fan doesn't get caught up in or understand the venom, and honestly, I think that is the fan Herbstreit has always targeted. I've come to the conclusion, and this goes for his broadcasts as well, is Herbstreit has been built for the unintelligent football fan. If you understand the game and have your pulse on the game nationally, his commentary is atrocious, but if you follow it one day a week and don't grasp strategies or concepts, he's perfect for you.

It was the smug implications in a scandal, with obviously no knowledge, without a later apology (and during a Boyzee game no less) that did it for me.
