Zwick may be out three weeks

JUSTIN ZWICK
There might be a new starting quarterback at Ohio State.
Barring a quick healing, Buckeye starting quarterback Justin Zwick could miss as much as the next three weeks with an injured shoulder.
Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel is expected to discuss Zwick’s health this afternoon when he meets with reporters during his weekly luncheon. Tressel, however, probably won’t rule Zwick out today. Those determinations are usually made Wednesday.
According to a source, Zwick’s injury could be as serious as a partially separated shoulder, sidelining the first-year starter for up to three weeks depending on the degree of injury.
Neither Zwick nor Tressel could be reached for comment Monday. Ohio State players had the day off from practice, and Monday is typically a quiet day in camp.
Backup quarterback Troy Smith is expected to start Saturday against Indiana. After the Hoosiers, the Buckeyes host Penn State and visit Michigan State.
Zwick, a Massillon graduate, has been the subject of much criticism from OSU fans. He struggled against Iowa. His shoulder was believed to be separated early in the game and he tried to play through it.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder has completed 81-of-160 passes for 1,020 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. Zwick has lost three fumbles and has helped contribute to OSU’s minus-7 turnover ratio.
Smith, who complained three weeks ago about his lack of playing time, replaced Zwick in the Iowa loss because of the injury and ineffectiveness, according to Tressel. The redshirt sophomore from Glenville High School did not fare much better than Zwick, completing 8-of-12 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown in the final minutes of the game.
Zwick was 6-of-14 passes for 74 yards in about a half of football. He threw a costly interception before halftime, otherwise OSU may have cut Iowa’s 10-0 lead to 10-7. Zwick also fumbled away the Buckeyes’ first possession of the second half. The ball was stripped from his right arm, the same shoulder that was separated.
The offense did not consistently move the football under either quarterback.
Zwick’s injury also could open the door for true freshman Todd Boeckman. The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder from St. Henry High School has been called the most talented QB in Columbus by Buckeye insiders. However, Tressel wanted to redshirt Boeckman this year to put two years of separation between Zwick, Smith and Boeckman.
That redshirt tag could be tossed now. Boeckman is another injury away from playing. If Smith is ineffective, Tressel may elect to give Boeckman a shot.
Ohio State has to win three of its final five games to become bowl eligible. Their final two games are at Purdue and home against Michigan.
