QB Justin Zwick (B1G Champion, National Champion)

bah... i quit reading the thread after the third page or so, but has anyone mentioned the fact that twice when we had third and ONE, we lined up in the shotgun? neither play resulted in a first down...

that, to me, is the most telling point... even the coaches have no confidence in the ability of the OL to run block, or in the RBs to get one stinking yard...

Woody is spinning in his grave right now...

Piney - practice isn't everything. Obviously, Smith is doing well enough in practice to impress his fellow players, and enough that Tressel didn't grant Zwick the job until the week before the Natti game. I've known a lot of players that didn't practice all that great, but once gametime hit, watch out...on the other hand, if he isn't even putting forth the effort in practice, then he should stay right where he is...

The lovely Iverson quote... "Practice? Practice? We're talking about practice!"

Supposedly this QB derby was 50/50 up until the Cincinnati game. But with the way Tressel has dished out the actual playing time tells us a different story. It tells us Tressel had Zwick ahead the whole time. That is the only way to explain what is happening right now.

Now my question is after Spring practice if Tressel named Zwick the outright winner and said he was the better QB would the outcry for Smith be as great? Of course we will still have people calling for Smith because afterall the backup QB is always the most popular player when a team struggles. But what would everyone say?

Of course I have not watched the practices, I am just going by what Tressel has done, not by what he says. Because the way he is treating Zwick/Smith shows what he was saying was more of a way to try to push both players to be better than what he actually believed.

I'll tell you this much....we've seen a lot of Zwick this year, and very little of Smith. Yet, IMO, Smith has thrown the best pass of the year so far. And the little Smith has shown has impressed me more than the bunch Zwick has shown.

Time for Troy Smith to backup his talk... this will give him a couple weeks in practice with the #1 team, as well as a couple games to show his abilities...

This is why it is nice to have a capable backup... and a good reason for him not to leave OSU at the end of the season...

Speaking of leaving... anybody know how JaJa is doing over at UNLV?

I hate to wish injury on any Buckeye, but this may be a blessing in disguise. First off it gives Troy Smith playing time. It allows Tressel to evaluate Smith in game film over practice film. It also allows Zwick the opportunity to sit on the bench and get a 3rd person perspective on what is going on out there.

But more important it allows us fans to see what Smith can do. If Smith succeeds he should remain as starter and everyone is happy. If he does as well as Zwick and maybe a little worse then when Zwick does come back the fans will be more behind him and maybe give him more confidence that the fans won't be screaming for Smith.

Or the real blessing in disguise... We're now one more injury from:

Todd Boeckman... Come on Down.

Ahh... Doesn't really matter though.
