Panthers give Ohio State's Zwick a shot
MIKE CRANSTON
Associated Press

Zwick faces long odds with Carolina. He is the fifth quarterback on the roster, behind starter Jake Delhomme, backup David Carr, third-string Brett Basanez and fellow undrafted rookie Dalton Bell.

Last year, the Panthers carried only two quarterbacks on the roster, while Basanez was on the practice squad.

"It's better than not having the opportunity, to be down here throwing balls," Zwick said. "Whether they want to bring me back for training camp or whatever, it's better to have this opportunity, to have a chance to be called back. I'm looking at it as a great opportunity."

Zwick gets his chance to make it in Carolina
By CHRIS EASTERLING

?I didn?t have any idea what was happening,? Zwick said via phone from Charlotte, N.C., where he participated in a voluntary workout with the Panthers on Monday. ?I was just trying to stay in shape working out in Columbus. Then my agent called and said they wanted to bring me in for a tryout.

?They brought me in on Thursday for a tryout, where I met the coaches. Friday morning, I worked out with a couple of receivers and the quarterback coach. After that, they said they wanted to bring me back in. So I flew home to Columbus, found some clothes, and flew back here on Sunday.?

?I really didn?t sit down with anybody,? Zwick said, ?because I didn?t want to solidify something and then a chance with an NFL team come up and have to drop what I had agreed to. I was probably thinking about something in sales around the Columbus area. There was a chance I could have done something with Channel 10 in Columbus as far as working football games in the fall. But I hadn?t really sat down with anybody yet.?

after seeing justin in the spring game i think that around halftime he looked like he started to get comfortable. his ability to dumb complex things down and explain them is something that i havent seen in the college game in awhile. that was the reason that once upon a time gameday was so good...

Ohio State backup Zwick to vie for Panthers spot

By Staff report

Tuesday, June 12, 2007
Justin Zwick, of course, was the grand hope of Ohio State football fans when he signed his letter of intent to attend the school as a quarterback in the winter of 2002. But his career didn't turn out that way, as he became a 6-foot-4, 225-pound backup to eventual Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.
The Carolina Panthers have signed Zwick to compete for a roster spot. (He's the fifth quarterback on the roster, behind starter Jake Delhomme, backup David Carr, third-string Brett Basanez and fellow undrafted rookie Dalton Bell.) But, they certainly haven't signed him based on his stats in Columbus.

PANTHERS GIVE BUCKEYES BACKUP A CHANCE

Zwick not ready to hang up cleats

His 2004 injury at Ohio State opened door for Troy Smith

As recently as last week, Justin Zwick was coming to grips with the idea his football days might be over.
He was hanging around Columbus, Ohio, and contemplating potential careers in sales or broadcasting.
At least for a bit, those plans can wait. Zwick, a former Ohio State quarterback, signed with the Carolina Panthers on Monday. He went undrafted in April and wasn't among the hundreds of players who signed with teams in the days immediately after the draft.
"I thought I'd be a free agent somewhere, but it didn't work out that way,'' Zwick said.
He got his chance late last week when he caught the attention of Panthers coaches during a Thursday workout.

Well fellas, I live just about 15 minutes down I-77 from Bank of America Stadium (Panthers Home Turf), and I've got a pretty good insight into this team. They are sort of my adopted home team, since I don't live near the Bengals anymore and don't get a lot of information.

It's pretty doubtful that Zwick will make the squad. The only chance he has is if Brett is gimpy during Mini-camps and can't go, and Justin would really have to show the staff something to make it over Bazanez, because they are really high on him.

So I flew into Columbus tonight, and on my transfer flight from Nashville, TN to Columbus, I see a middle aged guy wearing a sweater with 'JZ 12' on the neck.

I ask him if he's related to Justin Zwick - he's his father.

JZ's parents are really really nice people. Just the nicest people you could ever meet.

According to his dad, JZ is still doing the sports commentary but is trying out for some arena teams right now - keeping the dream alive.

I also asked about how tough it must have been to go through the whole QB juggling and the transfer rumors and whatnot.
His mother said that JZ never regretted staying and said it was a tough decision - ultimately, it was his playing time in the Alamo Bowl that really affected his decision to try to stick it out and get another shot.

Really nice people.
