QB Justin Zwick (B1G Champion, National Champion)

Rampage 63, Destroyers 60
Zwick makes quick strike in Destroyers' loss

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
For one moment, Justin Zwick tasted the glory he expected to have at Ohio State.

On the first pass of his Arena Football League career, the Destroyers rookie quarterback dropped back into his end zone, saw streaking receiver C.J. Johnson along the right sideline and heaved the ball just before he was hit. Johnson caught the ball in stride and went in for a 47-yard touchdown in the second quarter of Columbus' 63-60 loss to the Grand Rapids Rampage last night in Nationwide Arena.

If the announced crowd of 12,831 was hoping to see Zwick build on that promising beginning, they were in for disappointment. Zwick didn't play again as chants of ?We want Zwick!? went unheeded by coach Doug Kay.

It was a curious development considering the Destroyers announced early in the week that Zwick would see his first action. One snap would hardly seem to warrant a press release.

Zwick's first snap creates close game

Will Toman

Issue date: 6/19/08 Section: Sports

Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Zwick took his first snap of his Arena Football career as the Columbus Destroyers lost 63-60 to Grand Rapids Saturday.

Zwick only had the one snap during the game, but made it count as he threw a 47-yard touchdown to give the Destroyers the lead by three.

It was a great way to start," Zwick said. "I wanted to go deep. I figured they would probably play me up think I would go short on my first attempt and C.J. Johnson did a good job going out and getting the ball for a touchdown."

Starting quarterback Matt Nagy believes that Zwick can have a promising career in the AFL.

Makes you wonder what if Troy never started for us and Zwick started during the remainder of 05 and all of 06....

True, but I hate playing that game! When I start thinking about "what if''s" I starting thinking about things like Roy Hall and teammates not celebrating so much with TG in the bowl game.

But good for Zwick. We already have a record-breaking QB in the AFL right now, so who's, this could be Zwick's future success.

Last week's Destroyers-Justin Zwick saga was curious, to say the least. First, a team insider indicated that Zwick was likely to start against Grand Rapids. Then a couple of days later, the team issued a news release saying Matt Nagy was going to start and Zwick was going to play. Here's the actual language:

"Former OSU quarterback Justin Zwick ? will make his arena debut at quarterback Saturday. ? (Matt) Nagy will start before Zwick makes his debut."

Zwick got in for one play and threw a touchdown pass in a 63-60 loss.

With no good explanation for Zwick's one-play debut, two questions seem pertinent: Did Zwick's success jeopardize the Destroyers' chance of losing that night? Or was this simply a case of bait and switch to get a few Ohio State fans into the building?

It would seem to create credibility issues for the struggling franchise.

Former Buckeye zooms through Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
BY JAMI KINTON ? News Journal ? July 17, 2008

LEXINGTON ? A former Ohio State quarterback traded his jersey and shoulder pads for racing gear Thursday at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Justin Zwick, now quarterback for the Columbus Destroyers, made his first appearance at the Lexington race track to take a lap in a two-seater Indy car.

?Back in May, Justin and Matt Nagy (starting quarterback for the Destroyers) experienced our Indy car simulator at Nationwide Arena with Bruno Junqueira and Mario Mordes, of Dale Coyne racing,? said Becky Ackford, Mid-Ohio media communications coordinator. ?They had so much fun with the simulator, we specifically requested that Justin come back and try out the real thing.?

Wearing a bright orange and black race suit, matching his car sponsored by Hewlett-Packard and Firestone, Zwick rode behind driver Stephan Gregoire, of France. The experience kicked off a doubleheader race weekend at Mid-Ohio.

?Nationwide was awesome. I had Mario and Bruno telling me which way to turn ? it was a great time. When they asked me to come do this, I jumped at it,? said Zwick, 25. ?I always stuck to sports like football and basketball. I was so big, I always just thought racing was out of the question ? and I just barely made the cut today. I?m 6-4, 230 pounds, and the limit is 6-5, 250 pounds. I?ll probably be weighing the car down a little bit.?

Ackford said Zwick?s fastest lap reached 150 mph on the back stretch.

?It was amazing ? just a little different from football,? Zwick joked, as he emerged from the race car. ?It was sweet. I thought my helmet was going to fly off a couple times. I kept having to pull it down. It was crazy.?

Well, unless the Buckeyes were going to use Ginn at left tackle to help keep the ends off of Troy, I doubt if that "what if" would have made any difference. Or maybe use Ginn to play some tight man coverage on defense...

Good to see Zwick still making noise. But, shouldn't this thread be moved?

Couldn't disagree more.

Probably the wrong thread, but you couldn't disagree more with what? Ginn changing a 41-14 game into a victory? Many things went wrong in that game, and sure, the Ginn injury was one of the biggest, but as good as he is, he's not worth 27.5 points. Or maybe you disagree with the thread placement. Was it just moved to the Alumni forum, or was I imagining things earlier? If it was always here, then I disagree with me too (about that comment).

Justin Zwick's two years at Massillon unrivaled

Massillon quarterback Justin Zwick looks to hand off the ball during the 2001 season.

Before Justin Zwick ever took a snap of varsity football his legend was building. He was a high school freshman at Orrville High School. It was 1998 and he was going to have a chance to compete for playing time with the Red Riders.

Then Orrville?s starting quarterback tore ligaments in his knee during summer baseball. Suddenly, Zwick was a real option under center for the Red Riders.

?I was extremely fortunate to fall into a set of circumstances before my freshman year,? Zwick said. ?I had a lot of success early on, but the coaching staff and my teammates at that time helped rocket me up there and get things going at an early age. I still have good friends in Orrville, and I?ll always have a special place in my heart for Smucker?s Jelly and Bobby Knight.?

Zwick helped Orrville win a state championship as a freshman. He took them back to a state semifinal as a sophomore, but lost to Poland.

Then his father, Bill, landed a job as Massillon?s assistant superintendent. That?s when Zwick started to think about transferring to Massillon for his junior and senior seasons.

?Goodness yes, it was a tough decision,? Zwick said. ?I remember playing in the playoffs at Massillon my freshman season and you?re in awe of Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. It was the pinnacle of high school football. Knowing I was going to be a decent player, I wanted to test myself. We did as good as we were going to do in Orrville. I had friends in Orrville who I went to kindergarten with. I had to tell them I was going. There were a lot of tears shed.

?But I wanted to play big-time college football and it was a move that I felt was best for me.?

Game Week: First Game Excitement

Posted by Justin Zwick on 8/26/2013
Yesterday while I was on Twitter I came across a retweet from Mark Pantoni, Director of Player Personnel for The Ohio State Buckeyes. The tweet was from freshman punter Cameron Johnston, it read “Exactly 1 week from today till my first Ohio State Football game! Cannot wait! #bigweek #pumped”. This made me think back, not to my first game as a freshman but to the first game I was going to start under center.

I remember the excitement of getting out of camp on Friday and heading back to Massillon to watch the Tigers play with former Ohio State wide-out Devin Jordan. Back in our day, camp always ended on the first weekend of High School Football, so Coach Tressel would let us have that weekend off to go cheer on our old schools.

At this point in time, I wasn’t sure who was going to be taking that first snap against the Cincinnati Bearcats. We got to the game in Massillon and while we were on the sidelines, the PA announcer welcomes us back and mentions that I was going to be starting that next Saturday for the Buckeyes. I wish I would have known before I left camp, but it wasn’t a bad way to find out in front of all the fans that had supported me while at Massillon. That’s when it hit me; this dream was about to become a reality and I had one week to wake up.

Once the weekend was over and we were back at the Fawcett Center in Columbus for our Sunday night team meeting, that’s when everything became real for me. I had a chance to see Coach Daniels, the quarterback coach, and he went over the whole situation with us. That was when he first told me that I would be taking the first snap. Of course, I was excited anyways, but this put it through the roof. Preparation didn’t change, even in the last two years while Troy was the starter and in the Heisman race, I always prepared as if I was going to be the guy. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a bit more exciting, but it didn’t change how I went about practices and workouts.

Reloaded Ohio State Seeks Success

Posted by Justin Zwick on 8/1/2013

Coming off another undefeated season, there is a ton of excitement here in Columbus as we gear up for another fall. As we all remember Coach Urban Meyer’s first year and what he thought they needed to do to be better, we want to take a look at the 2013 season and the areas where growth took place in the past off-season. All Buckeye fans know what a special talent we have at QB in Braxton Miller. His growth in the passing game is something all of college football is waiting to see and will take this offense to another level.

One weapon that we all are excited to have back on the field is Jordan Hall. With the possible suspension to Carlos Hyde, Hall’s role may have to change from being a utility back to being the go-to guy in the run game. On the other side of the ball there are some questions. How are we going to stop the other team’s offense? The departure of John Simon, Jonathan Hankins and other key defensive linemen/linebackers, makes it imperative that young guys step up to fill those roles. I can remember my sophomore year in which we had lost some great players like Will Smith and Darrion Scott. We needed young guys like Quinn Pitcock and Jay Richardson to fill that void, and this is another time where the young guys will be thrown into the fire.

The improvement of the passing game is mandatory for the offense to be a success. Although Braxton was fourth in the Big 10 in pass efficiency, a lot of that came from him getting out on the perimeter and taking advantage of a broken play. I understand Braxton is a talent that doesn’t come around often with his feet, leading the team with 1,271 yards on the ground, but he doesn’t need to be taking some of the shots that he took last year.
