QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Look at the Browns….they’d be substantially better with Fields than Brissett at moment, and even when Watson comes back, how much of an upgrade is he, when the Browns are such a run heavy team? I didn’t understand that trade for CLE to begin with, but if you wanted an athletic game manager, go get someone like Fields.
Agreed… but i was talking about the draft from that year… because everyone thought “well Fields is the exact QB Shanny wants” and he trades what 3 first round picks for Trey Lance … who in year 2 or 3 is it looked like a rookie still…

cleveland and watson is a whole different mess for the browns thread …. maybe we need a “Sold our soul to win” thread

I know his team sucks but his reading of defenses seems to need improvement.
The first play of the second half of the game Thursday was how Chicago needs to use Fields. It was a perfect rollout with a receiver medium and one deeper with the option to run.

He can’t stand in what’s a constantly collapsing pocket and be successful. They really need to work with him on getting the ball out quick and trusting what he sees if they aren’t going to roll him.

Since I live in Carolina I follow the Panthers. We could sure use Justin but it appears we are stuck with Baker now…

What in the ever loving fuck????

Watson is massively better than Fields. You're talking about the league's career leader in completion percentage (close to 68%) to someone who hasn't cracked the 58% mark. Look, Fields was a great Buckeye and and absolute joy to watch in his two years at OSU. Fact of the matter is he has not proven to be a good NFL QB. Are his surroundings less than ideal? Yes. However, the guy was drafted to be a franchise QB, the type of player who elevates those around him and overcome their circumstances. He hasn't done that. There's still time for him to turn things around but the initial returns have been less than good.

*Please note this is only speaking to the two players' abilities on the field. I'm fully aware that Watson is a scumbag.

You're missing the point....in a Stefanski offense there's no need for an elite QB. Ideally, it's a mobile game manager. The Browns are massively over-paying for a player who they will ask to make really basic plays. Fields would be the ideal guy for that since he likely won't reach the ceiling of Watson. The draft capital the Browns spent as well as the contract were wildly outrageous based on Watson's legal issues compounded by fact that Stefanksi doesn't need a max QB. He just needs someone decently capable of running play-action.

Jacoby Brissett is serviceable but lacks the ability to escape which is what you need to compliment the play-action. Watson has the mobility and arm, but to pay him $300M is overkill for what they're going to ask him to do.

I wish I could see the entire field because I scream at how long Brissett holds the ball...
if not ONE receiver comes open in 5 seconds... then they suck worse than Brissett

all I get to see is.. Brissett holds the ball for 5 seconds then lofts a floater to a totally covered WR hoping for a prayer catch...

Justin needs to have a clock in his head and throw it away after that. Too man times he holds it and runs around and fumbles, sacked or just run out of bounds behind the line

I put my face in my palms when Chicago drafted JF because his clear and in my eyes only weakness at OSU was indecisiveness and not getting rid of the ball quick enough...that weakness could not be exacerbated any more than being in Chicago with no WRs, no RB and no OL. Year 1 I get that you draft the rookie QB and it takes another year to build around him. But Year 2 you lose all excuses when you have free agency and the draft to work on that, but inexplicably refuse to do it.

That said, last night was the best I have seen JF play in the League and he had one hell of a MNF performance. Really happy to see him bounce back on the big stage. Seemed very accurate on intermediate throws whether on the run or in the pocket, and was very decisive when he ran the ball. Unfortunately he is going to need to run the ball often this year with the Bears' offense and I just hope he tries to stay safe and not get injured. Who knows, maybe in Year 3 Chicago will wake up and try to put an offense around Justin...if he is still alive.
