QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

QB is the one position that held us back for many years. We NEVER got an elite recruit!
Sarcasm?

On Fields' level, Pryor and Braxton were close, though neither was as strong a passer as Justin.

Zwick, Smith, Henton, Barrett and Haskins were all well regarded recruits. QB development during the Bollman era was spotty, at best, but still gave us a Heisman winner who was money in big games aside from one black eye that was more of an OL problem. Barrett, for all his faults, and Haskins exceeded expectations. There's an argument to made the JT's limitations limited us some during his four years, but that's only because of the insane expectations levied by Buckeye Nation. A look at his stats and record puts him among the top B1G qbs of all time. And Haskins was a phenom whose team was held back by a dodgy defense in his one year.

QB, by and large, has not been as issue at tOSU, aside from a season here or there, for a long time. We're a far cry from _ichigan, Florida or LSU.

He’s gonna win the Heisman next year. I know Tua and Joey Lawrence’s brother will get all the hype, but Fields is going to put up astronomical numbers next year that will be impossible to ignore.
Ok, let's slow down a little.

If he starts in the fall, he'll be a first-year starter and those guys just don't take over and lead teams into the top-5 of the final polls. I mean, how many of the teams that just finished in the top-5 had first-year starters this year?

Clemson - 0 starts by a true frosh that took over after a month
Alabama - 0 starts, but a solid second half in one game for Tua
Ohio St. - 0 starts for Haskins
Oklahoma - Murray followed a Heisman Winner and won another
Ntre Ame - Ian Book took over after a month

I hope that proves my point.

It's the Haskins/JT situation. JT knew the offense, was Urban's guy, etc.. Fromm kept Fields on the bench the same way JT kept Haskins on the bench.

Yeap. In all reality, Haskins should have started twice in Indy. But it is what it is.
Coaches often have a certain loyalty to their entrenched starting QB. What happened with Bama in 17 and Clemson 18 was far enough out of the norm to warrant quite a bit of writing and several transfers.
Championship caliber teams rarely bench the established QB.

I'm no expert on recruits from HS film but I see a bigger, stronger, faster Troy Smith that has, by all accounts, Troy Smith level arm talent and accuracy.

With the QB coaching and offensive system we have now???

well since you say it like that

Regarding "beating out Fromm" last year...that would imply there was a legitimate competition. Fromm was coming off a very good freshman season where he led UGA to a NC Game appearance. I'm not sure Kirby Smart had any intention of turning over his QB position after the results he received from Fromm in 2017.
Well here at tOSU, he has already “beaten out” one QB and he hasn’t even played a down yet. Lol.

Fwiw, back in the day, this board thought Tress was a QB whisperer. Remember all the talk of “if he can do xyz with Krenzel then imagine what he can do with... then came Troy. Many thought Tress had a handle on it. But I digress...

Let's not forget Joe Daniels (RIP). He was a QB wizard and largely responsible for the development of the guys you mentioned. There was a noticeable drop-off in QB development afterwards.
