QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Ok, let's slow down a little.

If he starts in the fall, he'll be a first-year starter and those guys just don't take over and lead teams into the top-5 of the final polls. I mean, how many of the teams that just finished in the top-5 had first-year starters this year?

Clemson - 0 starts by a true frosh that took over after a month
Alabama - 0 starts, but a solid second half in one game for Tua
Ohio St. - 0 starts for Haskins
Oklahoma - Murray followed a Heisman Winner and won another
Ntre Ame - Ian Book took over after a month

I hope that proves my point.

How many years of eligibility left?

He has 3 years left but if he gets a waiver then I think the more important one is he is 2 years away from being NFL draft eligible. That at least let's Day build with him for 2 years.

I do still hope that Tate stays around for spring ball and get a real shot at being the starter. Fields might have the higher ceiling but if Tate is more developed I'd rather see him get the chance to start next year. Day did a very good job developing Haskins in the background before he got the starting job. Maybe he has done the same thing with Tate.

I'd rather have a situation where Tate starts out as the starter and Fields takes over mid-season or in a year than Fields getting to be the starter too early and we have to turn to Baldwin before he is ready.

Can he read defenses and handle pressure...these are the two crucial qualities that confound scouts and coaches when evaluating at EVERY LEVEL. The only way we’re going to find out is in games. He has all the potential in the world...as of now that’s all we know.

And yes, I’m excited as all of you.

Exactly, this is why I wouldn't just hand him the job and not give Tate Martell a chance to win the starting job. Fields might have all the potential in the world but if he doesn't put it together on the field on game day and Tate does for another team, it will be a bad look for Day in his first year.

I would think Day would want the chance for Fields or Tate to actually win the job and lead this team. With how Tate is acting right now, it doesn't seem like he feels he is going to get the level playing field to win the job. Hopefully Tate stays around for spring ball and is given the opportunity to win the starting job.

Tate has been here for 2 years. The playing field to be starting quarterback from Ohio State has been slanted heavily in his favor because he’s had that time to impress the one guy he needs to impress: Ryan Day.

If Ryan Day - who I trust - felt that he had seen enough from Tate Martell that he felt confident going into 2019 with him as the starter, Justin Fields probably isn’t here. So I understand why Tate feels he isn’t going to win that battle - because it appears Coach Day does not have a lot of confidence in him. But it doesn’t mean he didn’t have a fair shake.

Now would I rather have a Spring quarterback competition? Sure. Iron sharpens iron. I have no problem, however, with Tate transferring under these circumstances while his options are still wide open. And I have absolutely no problem with Day bringing in a talent like Justin Fields if he isn’t sold on Tate.

Do you think Day actively went out and looked for a better QB or Fields interest in Ohio State was a can't miss opportunity to get a better QB? I personally thought it was the latter. Would Day have done this for Hurts or any other transfer QB? I don't think so.

I think (do not know) that Day saw a tremendous talent and thought Fields was worth the risk of losing Tate. That’s got to say something about what he saw in these guys. You can take that as Day viewing Fields as a cant-miss college QB or you can take that as Day not having much confidence in Tate or both.

I think Tate can be a top 10-15 college QB somewhere and Fields probably has the ceiling to be a top 3 QB in the college game. I do think it's was a risk worth taking, I just think Urban and most other coaches would have calm Tate down and tried to keep him around for as long as possible, just to hedge the bet on Fields.

Urbz is pouring gasoline on the fire at the basketball game photo-ops

I think it also helps that we would get Fields for at least 2yrs as well. I don't think Day takes this risk in turning Tate away over a high profile grad transfer like Hurts or Winbush

Yeah I see it as a coach knowing Tate can be a great college QB, but with an obvious ceiling that Fields just doesn't have. Might also have to do with him liking Baldwin more and knowing he'd end up usurping Tate in a year or two anyway.

A quick point. Urban Meyer not greeting Haskins and Fields would have been a bigger story. If Tate Martell hadn't reacted so aggressively toward Fields publicly, then maybe he's in that photo set as well. Day is at Ohio State to run a football team. Maybe everyone is analyzing all of this a bit too much. Martell has thrown his toys out of the cot and made his decision. That is his right. I wish him well.

While no kid is ever a guarantee, everything I've heard about this kid is that he's very special. Check out the link from when he won the Elite 11 MVP. Dilfer said he'd never seen anything like it when talking about his professional approach. And Dlifer sees the best of the best every year. We got a really good one here guys.

I've watched his highlights and he does look really good. I'm actually excited to see him play. My argument wasn't about Fields but maintaining depth at the QB position. We don't know what the coaching staff has said or not said to Tate but we do know he is out there looking for a new school. It will be a moot point if Fields goes out and lights it up. If he doesn't though, there will be alot of people questioning Day.

Just for reference here is the list of 5 star QBs from 2006-2014. You would expect more than one to be a full time starter in the NFL right now. Only Matt Stafford is and Winston is the next closest with his rocky season.
