QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

No doubt... we were too pass heavy last year and being more balanced really can help us overall.

Only if the QB is good enough at reading the defense to take what they give him consistently.

I think folks are getting out over their ski's a bit thinking Fields is just going to step in and be equal or greater than Haskins.

He's going to have great teachers for sure but there is still a learning curve in front of him.

I dont think he be as good this season... but he can be better than Dwayne in certain ways from the jump.

Sure. Not hard to be a better runner than Haskins.

Best part is that running the QB too much is what the fanbase cognoscenti were bitching about the last couple of years with JT Barrett and Meyer.

We should get a poll started on who the usual suspects will turn on first, Fields or Day.

For all the praise that the 2018 O received, they scored 11 fewer points than the 2017 team.....even though they were paired with a much much worse defense that resulted in the starters playing further into games than in prior years. I don't think it's unrealistic to think that the O might be even better next year with Fields running the show. As amazing as that is to think about.

Until about the Maryland game, this offense was stuck in a weird zone where they weren't running the QB reads where the QB could keep it and that stymied things.

I do wish Haskins was coming back - as good as he was, 2018 was still UFM's offense and it was a somewhat square peg in it. When they opened it up against Maryland and scUM, it was clear the philosophy had somewhat changed in regards with how to use Haskins.

As for Fields, physically he's built a lot more like JT. While he is going to end up a better passer, he might not be there quite yet.

Hoooooooooooooo boy. It's only January and we're talking about having a better offense after losing record setting, best QB in program history Haskins.....in favor of a kid who's never played a real snap, minus 3 senior WRs, minus an "all american" early departure OLineman. This is going to be a long ass off season.

It's definitely optimistic to think that it will be better, but I don't think it's unreasonable. The 2018 offense put up 50 more yards but 11 fewer points than the 2017 offense. And both of those O's had QBs with deficiencies -- Barrett was a decent passer on a good day and Haskins was a meh runner on his best. Fields (assuming he is anywhere near as good as it sounds like he is) will not master the read-option like JTB did and certainly won't be the passer that Haskins was, but I'm of the admittedly scarlet-tinted opinion that the offense will be more well-rounded in 2019 resulting in similar or better numbers than the past two years.

Edit - and I think I've posted enough over the years for it to be known that I'm absolutely not one to (typically) blow sunshine out my ass off of hype.

Exactly. We threw for 350+ per game because we had to.

Teams were content with stopping/slowing the run game (especially since our defense set records in a bad way). We missed the threat of the QB run in that people didn't respect it. You watch, all the sudden JK is going to look like 2017 next season.

It's all about how we use Fields... we don't need to run fields to take advantage of the threat of him running.

Going to be a longer fall when all the sunshine addicts start having DT's because it takes a while for the 2019 offense to be anywhere near the 2018 offense.

Thus my way too early poll, do they turn on Day or Fields the first time OSU doesn't win by enough?
