QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

KYLE: JUSTIN FIELDS WILL LEAD OHIO STATE IN RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS
As he battles Trevor Lawrence for not only the Heisman Trophy but the honor of being selected by the NFL’s worst team this spring, Fields has to contend with both his rival’s arm and his legs. Lawrence doesn’t run often, averaging just 4.5 carries per game so far in 2020, but he already has four touchdown rushes in as many games as the Clemson coaching staff leans on his big frame in the option game once inside the red zone. Meanwhile, Ohio State’s top two running backs, Master Teague III and Trey Sermon, are both coming off serious injuries and a committee approach is expected, at least early on. I expect Ryan Day and staff to use a similar strategy, rarely putting their star signal-caller in harm’s way outside the 20, but liberally calling for QB-runs once near the goal line.

“That’s typically what you get when you have someone here for multiple years,” Day said. “The first year they’re trying to learn the offense, they’re trying to figure out how to make it work, the ins and the outs.

“Then when they become fluent in the language, they start to learn the why. Again, the first year it’s like: ‘What am I doing?’ The second year it’s usually: ‘Why am I doing it?’”

The head coach welcomes the give and take.

“He’s trying to figure out why we do things,” Day said. “We’re getting to the point now where when he hears a call, he knows what I’m thinking. He knows what Kevin Wilson is thinking.

“That’s really, really important. That’s when you can take it to the next level.”

Fields plans to keep on asking. He knows his relationship in particular with Day, who coached quarterbacks for two years in the NFL before moving to Ohio State as an assistant in 2017 and then to head coach last year, is valuable beyond measure.

“I think Coach Day is the best quarterbacks coach in the country,” Fields said. “I might be biased … but I just think he is just one smart guy, and I’ve learned so much from him.

“I plan on learning a lot more.”

Just sayin': (The first year it’s like: ‘What am I doing?’ The second year it’s usually: ‘Why am I doing it?’”) Wouldn't it be great to see Justin Fields come back next year and see what the third year question is?....:biggrin2:

What they're saying about Justin Fields ahead of opener

Fields was the talk of Twitter during Georgia's loss to Alabama on Saturday night and leading into Ohio State's opener on Saturday against Nebraska:

You're not going to find many analysts willing to put Fields in the No. 4 spot this season among draft-eligible quarterbacks. Widely-considered the second-best prospect this fall at the position behind Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, Fields is a dual-threat playmaker that "checks all the boxes" and has been projected as a Top 10 pick in next year's NFL Draft by most.

Coming from a former Georgia player, this take continues to emanate from Athens more than a year after Fields made the call to leave the SEC for the Big Ten. After Jake Fromm struggled last fall, the Bulldogs are starting Stetson Bennett at the position — a guy who entered fall camp as a fourth-teamer.

Part of the reason for Fields' rapid development in Columbus is a direct result of Day's influence on his game. Day helped Dwayne Haskins emerge as a future first-round pick during his only season as a starter in 2018 and now has a chance to help Fields to Heisman finalist honors for a second straight season.

Interesting comp here that hasn't been said often during Fields' pre-draft buzz. Watson was a total offense record-setter for Dabo Swinney at Clemson and if last season was any indication, Fields will be the same for the Buckeyes this fall. The two quarterbacks carry themselves with confidence as guys who can make plays with their arm or legs.

It's obvious Fields is mentally ready and anxious to get going this fall as the leader of one of the nation's top teams. He has reportedly worked on his craft throughout the offseason, re-sculpted his body on a Vegan diet and is primed to have a statistically-stellar final campaign with the Buckeyes (should he decide to go pro after the season).

No doubt Fields' efficiency numbers were off the charts last season and with each passing day, Georgia fans are being reminded of his Heisman-level rise to stardom. Stetson Bennett's three interceptions in Saturday's loss at Alabama were magnified given Georgia's wacky offseason under center.

Based on the analysis I did over the off-season, I think it will be pretty easy to see if Justin has taken the next-step that he and the coaches are hinting at.

On the first 3rd-and-medium (4 to 7 yards), watch for the blitz. They almost certainly will, as Ohio State did not handle it all that well last year. If, over the course of the game, it looks like the Buckeyes are handling the blitz (especially on 3rd down), then look out.

There may be a way of inferring something from just the first few plays though: In watching all of the 3rd down passes last year, it looked to me like Justin did not have the option to throw a hot-route. If, on the first occasion where the Huskers bring more blitzers than the Buckeyes have protectors, and Justin hits a quick slant before the unblocked defender gets to him...

You can't draw conclusions for seasons from a single play, but if I see that happen I'll probably crack my skull against the ceiling.

I’m getting my opinion on paper now..I like the original 230 lb omnivore JF over the new 213 lb vegatarian JF. I hope I’m proven wrong this is football not a marathon or 100 yd dash. He will get hit hard and a lot. I will be happy to eat my words but call me concerned.

Dumb. This reeks of a sports reporter just wanting a story to be a thing as opposed to reporting about what's actually happening in sports. I doubt Fields gives two shits about what Sunshine is doing in the JV league.

It won’t be a pick ..hamstring pull definitely and can a marathoners body hold up to the pounding of being a major college QB.
He's 218 pounds not 120 lol...

Seriously he's strikingly smaller than last year weight wise but I think that helps him with speed too. He only got banged up last year because of the knee injury late vs penn state but that can happen at any weight.

If anything I think we see an explosive JF.

One of the best passing performances I've seen from an OSU QB against a decent opponent. Not the highest numbers, but only 1 pass that was off target.

Held the ball too long a few times, but that was about it.

The one incompletion (probably*) should have caught by Olave but the ball came lose during the tackle when he landed on his head in the endzone. The only pass that was off target didn't count as Corn was called for pass interference.....

* I'm guessing that Olave will tell you that since he had 2 hands on the ball he should have held on to it. That's what all great receivers say.

Also, Fields had a QB rating of 237.1, I didn't know the rating could go that high...... :yay2:
