Posted: 2:01 PM- Utah Blaze quarterback Joe Germaine missed practice on Tuesday, but it is nothing to be alarmed about as the club prepares to take its two-game winning streak into San Jose on Saturday for a showdown with the division-leading SaberCats.
Germaine's wife, Natalie, gave birth to the couple's second son in an Arizona hospital on Sunday. Blaze coach Danny White said the boy will be named Crew. The Germaines also have a 3-year-old boy named Jackson.

How he doesn't get a legit look with an NFL team, yet Kyle Boller and fucks like Chad "0-4" Henne are possible STARTERS is a complete mystery to me.

Not only was Joe a damn fine QB, he was tough as nails. Even though he looks...young...I'll never be more proud of a Buckeye in a loss as I was of Joe against FSU.

Congrats Joe.
True fucking that. We got our asses handed to us, but Joe had some serious heart. Joe will always be a favorite of mine for his play and spirit. I loved this Buckeye.

Utah Blaze QB Germaine misses practice for family matter

Utah Blaze quarterback Joe Germaine missed Wednesday's practice to attend to a family matter in Arizona.

Germaine's newborn boy, not yet two weeks old, was having complications that required surgery on his heart, according to Blaze coach and general manager Danny White.

"He has a little heart defect," White said. "It's not a major thing, but it's something they want to correct now instead of waiting any more."

"We're just trying to keep (the Germaines) in our prayers and thoughts, and we're hoping for the best," said Blaze receiver Aaron Boone. "It's a tough situation."

I've always thought arm strength is one of the most over-rated aspects in looking at a QB. If you can throw the ball 75 yards in the air but can't hit a 10 yard route or don't know where to throw it then I wouldn't want you QBing my time.

It has less to do with how far you can throw it, but whether you can make all the throws necessary within the offense. Just about every throw requires a lot of "zip" on the ball. I've always thought that Joe kind of floated his ball too much. Even though the game is fast, the athletes in the AFL are not (relative to NFL players). Playing in a game that requires fast decision making against less talented athletes is where Joe should and does excel.

Chat with Utah Blaze QB Joe Germaine

Welcome to The Show! On Friday, Utah Blaze QB Joe Germaine will stop by to chat about the 2008 AFL season.

Germaine and his Blaze teammates host the Los Angeles Avengers Monday (10 p.m. ET, ESPN2). The game is a key battle for the playoffs in the American Conference. Entering the game, Utah (4-10) sits in the sixth seed and LA (4-9) is in the fifth seed.

In his fourth season in the AFL, Germaine has quickly established himself as one of the AFL's elite QBs. The 2008 season is no different. The Ohio State product is second in the league in QB rating (124.3), passing yards (3,995) and TD passes (81).

Germaine's 2007 regular season was a record-breaking one. He finished with a league-leading 5,005 passing yards, which established a new league mark, breaking Mark Grieb's record of 4,841. He also led the league in completions (422), while finishing second in TD passes (107) and attempts (617).

Send in your questions now and then join Germaine at 4:30 p.m. ET on Friday!

Buzzmaster: Joe is here!

Joe Germaine: Hi to all the AFL fans out there, especially all you Blaze fans!

Paul Chavez (Gilbert, AZ): Through out all of your football experience, who has been your favorite wide receiver to play with?

Joe Germaine: That is very tough, since I played with some great ones like David Boston, who is a great player and the best I've played with in the outdoor game. In the indoor game I've had Burley and a three headed monster this year in McKelvy, Boone and Whitaker, so I cannot name just one!

Luke(Zanesville): Hey Joe, what's your fondest memory from your days at Ohio State? How do you think the Bucks do this season? Good luck this year with the Blaze!

Joe Germaine: Thanks first of all! My fondest memory would have to be winning the Rose Bowl as a sophomore. It was our goals to make that game, and it had been a very long time, at the time, since we had won a Rose Bowl. And to win a game on the last-minute drive, made it one of the gretest memories of my playing career. As far as this year, they have a ton of starters coming back, so I expect them to be in the national title chase.

Germaine's thoughts on ill son, playoffs
Richard Obert
The Arizona Republic
Jun. 20, 2008

Quarterback Joe Germaine's lows this Arena season had nothing to do with Utah's 0-9 start.

No, it was the personal ordeal that began in late May when he received a frantic call from home about his infant son's heart.

Born on May 11 with a heart defect in Mesa, Crew Germaine underwent surgery, which, so far, has turned out OK. advertisement

"It puts things in perspective," said Germaine, who played at Mesa Mountain View High, Scottsdale Community College, Ohio State and with the Rattlers.

"It makes you realize what is truly important in your life."

He is back home this weekend not only to bond with his baby but to help the Blaze try to secure a playoff berth by beating his former team Saturday night at US Airways Center.

Utah, Grand Rapids, Los Angeles and Colorado are each 5-10 with the final three spots up for grabs in the American Conference.

The Rattlers (8-7) have clinched a home playoff game next week.

The consummate pro, Germaine realizes it is first a business trip, but he can't help but feel the pull of a son who has battled much more than Joe ever did.

"We're expecting a full recovery," Germaine said of his son. "He still has got a little ways to go. He's not out of the woods. I don't want to say he's out yet until he's playing around with his older brother (3-year-old Jack)."

Through Crew's fight, Germaine maintained numbers that have kept him near the top of the league.

He comes into the final week as the second-rated passer in the Arena Football League at 122.8. He has passed for 91 touchdowns, tied with Colorado's John Dutton for the league high. He has completed 387 passes for 4,539 yards.

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Blaze QB JOE GERMAINE (6-2, 220, Ohio State) and WR HUEY WHITTAKER (6-5, 220, South Florida) were named to the ESPN.com All-AFL Team earlier in the week.

Germaine threw for 4,859 yards and 97 touchdowns and had a QB rating of 123.1 for the Blaze (6-11) in 2008.

"He continues to put up awesome numbers despite offensive changes," wrote Gary Horton on ESPN.com. "He lost his best receiver, Siaha Burley, in the offseason and had to break in a new group of receivers."

1997 ...part time starter ...8 for 8 in 3 minutes or less to halftime, two minute offense drives. Two or three times cold off the bench. The only time in those 8 situations in 8 different games he didn't lead us to a TD was also his only start of that 8, vs Penn St, when Keller dropped his pass at the 3 with enough time for a couple more plays...and we had to kick a medium FG. And all that...from the I formation with play action [like...boy did we fool 'em!]. Haven't seen or heard of anything in CFB that approaches that kind of sustained CLUTCH performance...let alone as a 1B QB... often from non passing formations.

Germaine could be headed back to Rattlers

by Richard Obert - Oct. 6, 2008 05:56 PM
The Arizona Republic
Joe Germaine, a former Rattlers player and one of the most successful quarterbacks in recent years in the Arena Football League, is negotiating a return to Arizona.
“We have talked but I can't get into details,” said Rattlers coach Kevin Guy. “We're always interested in making the Rattlers a better organization.”
Germaine last week opted out of his contract with the Utah Blaze with the possible return to the Rattlers. He lives in the Valley, where he grew up, starring at Mesa Mountain View High and Scottsdale Community College, before breaking the hearts of Arizona State football fans in the 1997 Rose Bowl leading Ohio State on a late game-winning touchdown drive that gave the Sun Devils their only loss.
Last year, Germaine signed the longest contract in Arena history, but there was a clause in his five-year deal that allowed him to leave the team if Danny White was no longer the team's coach.
White resigned June 30, after Utah lost in the first round of the playoffs a third straight season. He was replaced by assistant coach Ron James.
Germaine, who was a backup for Sherdrick Bonner in Arizona in 2004 and '05 before joining former Rattlers coach White in Utah in '06, did not return messages left by The Republic. But he told the Salt Lake Tribune that James was not the reason he is looking into free agency.
During last season, Germaine was commuting back and forth from Arizona to Utah after his infant son Crew needed emergency heart surgery.

If the Destroyers have any sense whatsoever, which I don't think they do, they will do whatever it takes to get Germaine back to Columbus. Stop with the Scotty Mac and Justin Zwick stuff. Get an actual proven AFL player back to Columbus, and if you still can't sell your product...get the hell out of Columbus.

This Heap wants to play QB in college

Brad Heap will likely follow the steps Joe Germaine took out of Mesa Mountain View, not those taken by his now-famous brother Todd, an NFL tight end of the Baltimore Ravens.

The youngest Heap, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior, works out with both his brother (who is 12 years older) and Germaine, the former Ohio State quarterback, who broke the hearts of Arizona State alumni everywhere in 1997 when he led the Buckeyes' to the game-winning Rose Bowl drive that handed the Sun Devils their only loss and a chance at the national championship that football season.

"I had him in (ASU) Coach Dennis Erickson's office a couple of weeks ago and he said, 'Why don't you come play tight end for me?' '' said Bob Heap, father of Todd and Brad. "Brad said, 'I think I want to play quarterback.' ''

Brigham Young also wants Heap to be a tight end.

Heap is determined to lead. He has had to be patient and realize that he is part of a Mountain View offense that likes to grind the ball on the ground, led by little scatback Jacom Brimhall, a 2,000-yard rusher in 2008 who returns this season.

Heap, left-handed, was the backup quarterback his junior year, but, when the starter was injured, Heap threw for five touchdown passes in a victory over Mesa. He played some receiver last season and can play the position, but he is confident with his quarterback abilities.

Todd encourages him.

"Todd has been around some pretty good quarterbacks, and he said Brad is pretty good, and he wouldn't steer him wrong," Bob Heap said.

Germaine also tells the younger Heap to follow his heart on the field.

Germaine was recruited as a safety by ASU and BYU out of Mountain View, but he knew he could play quarterback. After a year at Scottsdale Community College, Germaine followed an SCC coach to Ohio State.

The rest is history.

Germaine works out individually with Heap, while awaiting the return of the Arena Football League. He signed last off-season with the Rattlers.
