Utah Blaze: Germaine signs four-year extension
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 01/29/2008
It appears that Joe Germaine will be the Utah Blaze's starting quarterback for a long, long time.
Germaine, the former Ohio State quarterback, has agreed to a four-year contract extension that will keep him in a Utah uniform through the 2012 season. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed and the agreement won't be official until it gets league approval, a Blaze spokesperson said Tuesday.
Germaine, Utah's starting quarterback in its first two seasons in the Arena Football League, finished the 2007 regular season by leading the AFL in completions (422) and passing yards (5,005) and was second in touchdown passes with 107.
His 5,005 passing yards broke the AFL record of 4,841 set by San Jose's Mark Grieb in 2007.

Blaze: Blaze: Spotlight shines on Germaine
Star quarterback's record-setting 2007 got him a five-year deal

Utah Blaze receiver Aaron Boone has a theory, which wouldn't seem like that big of a deal if it weren't coming from a player who catches passes for a living.
As Boone sees is, the secret to the Utah Blaze's record-setting offense the past two years was not Siaha Burley, the Arena Football League Offensive Player of the Year in 2007 who bolted for Arizona in the offseason.
"Siaha was a great player, don't get me wrong," Boone said. "But I think Joe Germaine made him even that much better. . . . When I look at our offense, I look at the guy who is throwing the ball. He's the one making the plays. That's who the team has put its focus on."
Sure enough, Utah rewarded Germaine just before training camp started with a five-year contract, the longest in AFL history. More than anything else, the contract signifies that, with the departure of Burley, this is Germaine's team.
"He's committed to the Blaze and we're committed to him," coach Danny White said. "I think it is a mutual thing. We want Joe to end his career here. That's the message we are trying to send."
Germaine, 32, is too humble and conservative to boast that he's now the sole face of the franchise -- outside of White, the former Dallas Cowboys star -- but clearly the pressure is on the one-time Ohio State quarterback to get the Blaze to the playoffs.
"We've got some guys that are familiar with the system and have the talent to get the job done," he said, downplaying his role as the team leader. "They've got big shoes to fill, but hopefully with these guys we have we can get the job done."
Germaine is coming off a spectacular season, having thrown for an AFL-record 5,005 yards and 107 touchdowns, second-most in the league. His 422 completions and 617 attempts last year were also AFL highs.

No ordinary Joe: QB Germaine looks to Blaze frontier for Utah's AFL team

The quarterback, no matter what the league or level, is always a focal point of a football team.
But now, more than ever, Joe Germaine is the man for the Utah Blaze.
"Joe has pretty much got to take this team on his back now and make all the right decisions," said Blaze coach and general manager Danny White.
No pressure there.
During the offseason, two-thirds of the Blaze's most recognizable trio of stars left the franchise, which is now entering its third year in the Arena Football League. Siaha Burley, the AFL's 2007 Offensive Player of the Year, signed as a free agent with his hometown Arizona Rattlers. And Hans Olsen, an outspoken BYU graduate who was a 2006 member of the AFL's All-Ironman Team, retired to concentrate on his budding sports talk radio career.
"Between Siaha and Hans, that was a lot of veteran leadership there," White said. "We'll miss them both."
But Germaine is back and with the Blaze to stay. The record-setting QB signed a five-year contract extension, the longest in AFL history, that is scheduled to keep him in a Blaze uniform through the 2012 season.
"He's committed to the Blaze and we're committed to him," White said. "It's a mutual thing. We want Joe to end his career here. That's the message we're trying to send to him. 'You're our guy, Joe. You're the one we want to lead this team for the next five years."

Germaine finds his pro niche

Utah Blaze quarterback Joe Germaine plays ice-cold. He does not faze easily even when his coach puts him on the griddle in happy times.
In the off-season, Germaine signed a four- year extension that will keep him with the Blaze at least through 2012. Utah coach/ Gen eral Manager Danny White, while praising Germaine, was quoted in the local papers as saying, "Joe has pretty much got to put this team on his back now, and make all the right decisions."
Is that all?
White added that he would not hesitate to "change things up" if Germaine were to struggle in a game.
Germaine heard the words and remained calm, as usual.
"Quarterbacks, in general, have a lot on their plates," Germaine said last Wednesday by phone from Utah. "It's especially true in the arena game."
Asked if he feels extra pressure from White's assessment, Germaine said: "No, I really don't. I know I have a big job to do, and I accept the responsibility. At the same time, I have a lot of good players around me, and we all need to do our part to be successful as a team."
Germaine leads the Blaze into The Q on Sunday for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff against the Gladiators. The former Ohio State standout and 1997 Rose Bowl most outstanding player took note of the Gladiators' 61-49 victory over New York last Monday at The Q. The franchise's inaugural game in Cleveland unfolded in front of 17,000-plus.
"It looks like they've got a good thing going over there," Germaine said. "Cleveland is such a great football town. I know first-hand how Ohio fans, in general, are very loyal. The Gladiators should do really well."

Former Ohio State star Joe Germaine shattering records as Utah's passer

Joe Germaine is the type of guy who wants to look back on his football career and not have any regrets.
The resident of Chandler, Ariz., and former quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes returns to the state today as his team, the Utah Blaze, takes on the Cleveland Gladiators at 12:30 p.m. at Quicken Loans Arena.
Although Germaine didn't have the career in the National Football League that he wanted, he's shown that he possesses the skills to elevate his game on an alternate pro level.
''I had all the aspirations in the world to play in the NFL. I was able to do that. I was able to do that for four years,'' he said. ''I wish I was able to play there longer, but I'm very happy and honored to be able to play in this league.''
He spent time on the rosters of the Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals and the St. Louis Rams' Super Bowl championship team that featured AFL refugee Kurt Warner at the helm.
Germaine has transferred that success to the AFL in a career that began with the Arizona Wranglers and now the Blaze, where he's personally set the league's record book on fire.
Last year, Germaine set the single-season passing record for the AFL with 5,005 yards passing. He also tossed 100 touchdowns and had 617 passing attempts. He led the league in completions with 422.
The AFL is a league that maximizes Germaine's talents as a passer. Buckeyes fans will recall that then-coach John Cooper often rotated the strong-armed Germaine with the more elusive Stanley Jackson.

The worst part is not knowing why. And if you could transform a football into a dart like that, you'd wonder, too.
Before Troy Smith came along, Joe Germaine had a legitimate chance to win any debate as the most accurate quarterback in Ohio State history. He led the Buckeyes to a Rose Bowl victory and was named the game's MVP. He set 11 school records and was named to Ohio State's All-Century Team in 2000.
He was supposed to end OSU's drought of quarterback production in the NFL. Now, over a decade later, Germaine will lead the Utah Blaze into the Q today to face the Gladiators in an arena game. He's still in football, but this isn't the way it was supposed to go.
Germaine, though, has no answers for why he couldn't make it in the NFL. And that's the aggravating part.
''If I had the answer to that, I'd probably sleep a lot better,'' Germaine said. ''To be honest, I'm really disappointed that, for whatever reason, I just didn't get any opportunities.

LOS ANGELES ? Despite nine touchdown passes by Joe Germaine, the Utah Blaze came out on the wrong end of the score again, dropping their seventh game of the season Saturday night, this time a 79-62 decision to the Los Angeles Avengers.
Germaine threw for 362 yards, with J.J. McKelvey catching 11 balls for 171 yards and five touchdowns. All those numbers, however, were overshadowed by a disastrous stretch of missed opportunities and turnovers just prior to and after the half.
