Germaine works late magic again
Mike Dugan, For the Tribune
It was the game their coach said they had to win. And for more than 59 minutes the Arizona Rattlers did. But Joe Germaine hit Orshawante Bryant (both former Rattlers) with a 23-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, sending the Utah Blaze to an improbable 75-71 win Saturday in front of 9,594 at US Airways Center.
It?s the first time the Danny White-coached Blaze (2-0) have ever defeated his former team.
?It feels pretty good,? White said. ?This was not a monkey, this was a gorilla.?
The Blaze, playing without injured starting wide receivers Siaha Burley (bruised foot) and Aaron Boone (high ankle sprain), received a career night in relief from former Arizona State receiver Ryan Dennard, who caught 16 passes for 181 yards and seven touchdowns.
?I don?t know if I have ever seen an effort like Ryan Dennard put in tonight,? White said.
Germaine, a former Rattler and graduate of Mesa Mountain View High School, was just as good, completing 34 of 48 passes for 433 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Arizona?s pass defense has given up 19 touchdowns this season.
The Rattlers seemed to have the game in hand ? several times. They led by 19 points in the second quarter and held 12-point lead at halftime.
The Blaze cut the margin to four repeatedly throughout the second half, but each time quarterback Sherdrick Bonner led the Rattlers on a drive that pushed it back to a two-possession game.
But with 44 seconds left, Germaine hit Dennard from 18 yards out to get within two. Utah then recovered the onside kick, and three plays later Germaine found Bryant for the game winner.
The loss spoiled another great effort from Bonner, who finished 23 of 34 for 319 yards and seven touchdowns.
?I really don?t know what to say,? Bonner said. ?I?m stunned right now.?
?That onside kick at the end, they just got a good bounce. At that point, they pretty much knew they were in control of the game. Coach White, as usual, controlled the clock, ran it all the way down and left us little time to get anything done.?
Trandon Harvey filled in nicely for injured wide receiver Cosmo DeMatteo, who is out for the year after breaking his foot.
A rookie who made the team after signing a two-day contract at the beginning of camp, Harvey had 10 catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns. He added another score on a kickoff return.
